Geography
The Xaleshy Temperate forests is an idyllic place filled with greenery and evergreen vegetation. The region retains its colors all year round and is one of the most beautiful places in all of Taerel. Unfortunately for the region, its wonderful views have always been hidden behind the ruthless kin'toni clans that ran amok throughout the entire region. They control most of the passes into the region and their brutal regimes dissuade any potential visitor from making the trip here. In terms of terrain, the Xaleshy has a combination of tall mountains and deep U shaped valleys.
The region is synonymous with its crystal clear waters that flow down from the mountains and into its valleys forming many fast flowing rapids and dangerous whirlpools along the way. Its mountainsides and valleys are covered with fresh, evergreen forests. These woods harbor many secret clearings that are filled with wild flowers and colorful plants. Many of the kin'toni worship these spots as the abode of their dieties and had a level of reverence and respect that was uncommon to them. The terrain of the Xaleshy was not difficult and it was fairly easy to navigate.
The undergrowth was not too thick and could be easily traversed by both zu'aan and kin'toni. The only natural obstacles were some cliff faces on the mountains and fast flowing rapids that had to be crossed by some other means. The zu'aan, to their credit, built many simple, rope bridges across many of these rapids to ease travelling and navigation in the region. The Xaleshy was full of all kinds of raw materials from the wooden planks provided by the forests, to the rocks and stone that could be found in the natural rock formations of the mountains.
The region also had many ore deposits but the technology at the time was too backward to take advantage of this. There were only a few zu'aan clans who were familiar with ironwork who could take advantage of these iron ore deposits. The abundance of natural resources allowed the zu'aan to build up beautiful and large enclaves with tall walls to protect themselves from the kin'toni attacks. The Xaleshy Temperate forest experienced three distinct type of climates in a year: Spring, Summer and winter. The temperatures remained consistent and temperate throughout most of these seasons.
Except for some small abberrations- during heat waves and blizzards. Spring was the first season of the year and was characterized by the thawing of leaves and the blooming of flowers. The region would regain its color during this period after the long winter months. Summer was similar to spring, but with slightly higher temperatures and rainfall. Most of the fruit bearing trees and plants would ripen during this season. The slight increase in temperature and humidity was vital to this process of the plants. The last season of the year was winter.
During these months, temperatures would dip and the region would lose most of its bright colors that would be replaced by duller shades of green and yellow.
Plants
The Xaleshy Temperate Forests are home to a wide variety of vegetation ranging from evergreen to deciduous trees and seasonal plants that come up at different times of the year. Cultivation was practiced in a very limitied scale, especially in recent times as most of the open lands are guarded by the kin'toni and the zu'aan farmers are free to cultivate only small tracts within or close to their enclaves. Regardless their yields are usually high as the region has many factors going for it. First, the soil deposits that washed down from the mountains are filled with minerals and nutrients condusive to plant growth.
The region is also well watered and recieves adequate rainfall throughout the year. To top it off the temperatures remain at a bearable level and rarely exceed the extremes. This makes it possible to grow more than a single crop in a year- helping the zu'aan farmers store up large food stockpiles to last for years. The forest cover a major part of the region and provide the region with wood and certain fruits as well as act as a natural shade for the kin'toni who were able to function under the shade even during the brightest summer days, despite their sensivity to light.
The treetop layers of these closely placed trees interwined to create a rooflike system that kept out both the weather elements such as hail and rain as well as excessive sunlight. The forest floors were dimmer as a result and had cooler temperatures. The trees of the Xaleshy were famous for their resistant properties and were one of the most reliable wood types for use in construction. The zu'aan architecture was heavily influenced by the use of wood and included many famous designs and joints that needed no nails to hold planks in place.
Some of the most famous plants of the Xaleshy Temperate Forest included the evergreen worend tree, the smaller war'kel, and the kelanys plants that were grown by the zu'aan for their seeds. The Worend was one of the tallest and most distinctive trees of the Xaleshy region. They could rise to heights of over twenty five feet and had many stems and leaves growing from it. The main trunk itself was very straight and pointed straight towards the heavens with no visible disfiguring. This made the wood easy to prep and be turned into planks.
And was one of the reasons why it was the favored woods among woodcutters and builders. The war'kel was a more conventional tree that could reach upto a maximum of fifteen feet in height. It had a wide trunt and many thick branches growing out of it. The war'kel's leaf were a distinctive bright yellow in color and its wood was known for its natural oils and good ageing properties. It was a very high quality wood that was rarer and a favorite of more skilled craftsmen and artists who dealt with the carving of figures and idols. The kelanys was the most common crop of the zu'aan settlers in the Xaleshy region.
Its stalks could grow to a height of ten feet and produced white corn like seeds that grew at the tips of the plant. Several of these seeds could grow out of a single plant, making it very productive in terms of yield. It was the staple diet of most zu'aan tribes in the Xaleshy region.
Animals
The Xaleshy Temperate Forest was home to a variety of animals ranging from pradatory beasts that stalked the forests and highlands of the region to the cattle and livestock that the zu'aan domesticated and reared for their own use and consumption. The favorable conditions of the region made it a hotbed of animal activity, especially when other regions seggered some intense heat or cold wave. The Xaleshy regularly recieved many migrating animals that would pass through or settle for months in the region before they flew back home. The region had a complete food chain with hundreds of species at all levels.
These wildlife would also feature prominently in the cultures, and practices of the region. Many of the zu'aan had led pastoral livestyles in their past and retained a deep sentiment for grazing and owning thier own livestock. Thus, the practice was continued- albeit in a smaller scale within their encalves where families maintained their own cattle. The zu'aan and kin'toni of the region also had many hunting habits and traditions. The zu'aan were very wary of the large man-eating beasts that lurked within the forests and considered it a test of both character and skill for a hunter to hunt one of these.
Meticulous preparations and rites would be performed before their hunts and only the most capable among them were allowed to take on these challenges. A hunter could spend days chasing after his prey and had to retain his strength and concentration for the one crucial moment when he came face to face with his target. A successful hunt brought glory and celebrations while a failed one led to mourning and fasting. The kin'toni had a similar approach to hunting but did it at a larger scale and more frequently. Due to their physical gifts, they were more successful than the zu'aan in most of their hunts.
Some of the most famous animals of the Xaleshy Temperate Forests were the predatory cannibal oughs, the domesticated nyust and the very rare horned aleaenth. The oughs was the apex predator of the Xaleshy forest. Perched on two powerful hind legs and armed with large claws and a mouth that could bite a full-grown zu'aan into half. It was the standard against which hunters had tested themselves for decades. Towering at over ten feet, it was an intimidating beast that had an ear piercing whine and razor sharp teeth. Hunters had to try and weaken it with projectiles for hours.
Before even attempting to wander near one of these fearsome beasts. The Nyust was the lifeline of the zu'aan in the Xaleshy forest. It could serve as a beast of burden to carry their belongings or be used to plough fields and run grinding mills. It was also a source of milk and meat when times were hard. These animals were closely interwined with zu'aan lore and they had an almost religious reverence for it. The aleaenth was a rare horned creature that was pale white and built like a large gazelle. Its fur and meat were among the most prozed items in the region and hunters often competed to hunt down these rare animals.
Sometimes, risking their lives in year long expeditions into the heart of the forests.
