Geography
The Vxrek tropics was a hot and humid region of the world that was filled with dense tropical vegetation. Most of this vegetation was evergreen and retained their color throughout the year. This gave the region its distinctive green appearance when viewed from far. The region was easily distinguishable by its three levels of vegetation from the dense vegetation covering the forest floors to the layers of thick leaves that blocked the sunlight from ever reaching the forest floors.
The terrain was a mixture of rolling hills and plains with a large muddy river slowly winding its way across the whole region. The river brought new soil deposits into the region every rainy season when it would overflow its banks and cause massive flooding along its entire banks. The soil of the region was reddish in color and was very fertile for plant growth. This coupled with the warm climate and the abundance of water sources made the region a very fertile area where plants could spring up from any uncultivated piece of land.
Most of the region was covered in thick vegetation as a result and made navigation a very daunting prospect. As a result, most of the local tribes who settled in the region rarely explored more than a few miles around their homes. The region had a few mountain ranges that could reached over three thousand meters above sea level and towered over the rest of the region. These areas of higher elevation experienced heavy winds and cooler conditions as a result. The terrain here contained many loose rock and mud that made it prone to mud and rock slides during the continuous rains of the summer months.
Vegetation was also scanty in these mountains and the trees would regularly shed their leaves during the winter months as opposed to the evergreen nature of the trees in the lower regions. The region had a tropical climate with very hot and humid conditions. It received a very high level of precipitation and had two major seasons, summer and light winters. During the summer seasons the sun's rays shone directly over the region and it experienced high temperatures in the thirties that were further exacerbated by the extremely high humidity. M
ost of the rainfall in the region happened during this season. The rain would continue unabated for many days at a time, flooding the river and causing the rocks and soil along the mountains to become compromised and slide down the slopes in large mud and rock slides. The region would also see its fair share of thunderstorms and flashfloods. Summer crops and plants were cultivated during this season and harvested by the start of winter. Winter in the Vxrek was just a name and the region wouldn't experience any sudden cold or major temperature changes.
The region remained warm throughout with a slight relaxation on the humidity levels and the rainfall. The region would also experience strong winds that blew across the entire region during this period, making the conditions bearable and allowing both wildlife and zu'aan to work comfortably in the outdoors. Cultivation would not cease during these seasons as the region still received enough precipitation to support the growth of less water-intensive crops.
In the mountains and regions of higher elevation the temperatures could drop to single digits and the region would regularly be clouded in a thick layer of mist and fog during the mornings and evenings.
Plants
The vegetation of the Vxrek tropics was dominated by heavy tropical trees and shrubs that grew all along the forest floors. These plants grew very close to each other and were clumped together in tight formations that blocked out the sunlight. The size of these trees varied from the tallest that could measure over thirty feet and the lowest plants that grew along the floor. The dense vegetation was a result of the very fertile red soil of the region combined with the easy availability of water and the favorable warm climate.
It was common for large clearings that had been ravaged by fire to instantly start sprouting new plants the very next day. Some of the most visible plants in the region were the nydynu, the ormiss, the cheuold and the neph. The nydynu was one of the tallest trees in the Vxrek region. It was a tropical plant with evergreen leaves that retained its leaves. These leaves were large and waxy, forming a canopy that shielded the forest from the harsh rays of the sun and helped to equally distribute the rainfall as it trickled down from their leaves.
Like most trees in the region, it had a bright green color and a dark brown stem that was broad and sturdy. The wood of the nydyny tree was highly regarded for its quality and mite resistant properties. It was most commonly used in construction activities throughout the region. It could survive the humidity of the region without rotting or showing signs of brittleness. The tree also produced a sweet, juicy fruit that was cradled inside a needly exterior. The ormiss was another tree that was common to the region.
It was smaller than the nydynu and grew to a maximum height of twenty foot and occupied the second canopy layer. It was colored a lighter shade of brown with large green leaves. The ormiss produced small dry nuts that were a staple of the smaller wildlife that lived in the trees. The stems were thin and brittle, and were rarely used as construction material. The roots of the tree dropped down from the branches in rope like extensions that buried into the ground. The cheuold was a fruit bearing plant that grew close to the forest floor.
It was a dull yellow in color and bore fleshy red fruits that could be eaten whole or used in stews and soups. It was a major part of the native zu'aan diet. It was vulnerable to flooding and oversaturation of the soil and thus relied on the canopy provided by the taller trees for their own survival. They were very vulnerable to minor changes in weather conditions but made up for it with their numbers. The neph was the most type of crop planted by the zu'aan natives of the region.
They were grown in the clearings around settlements and provided a very reliable and bountiful crop that could fulfil the nutritional requirements of these small groups. The neph could grow to about ten feet and required flooded soil conditions. They were very water intensive and were thus grown only during the rainy summer months. Their neph granules that were harvested as the end product were inch sized grains that were further grinded down to create flour for the traditional zu'aan bread.
Animals
The Vxrek region is home to a wide variety of animals due to the abundance of food and plants, along with the favorable climate that doesn't require much adaptation. The region rarely experiences any extremes of temperature and there is plenty of water and natural habitats for animals to take shelter in. The only danger is from the flooding of their habitats or destruction through the rock and mud slides that regularly occur during the heavy rainy season. Some of the most visible animals in the region include the qua'tei.
A rare predator that lived among the trees of the Vxrek forests, the daratur bird, the oversized ape like rilald . The forest ecosystem has its own food chain and ecosystem that also involves the zu'aan natives who were at the top of it. The qua'tei was a sloth like creature that lived in the treetops of the Vxrek forest. Unlike a conventional sloth, the qua'tei was known for its ferocious appetite and its predatory instincts. Its preferred method of movement was by swinging from branch to branch with its long prehensile limbs that could extend to over three feet, thanks to its loose joints.
Moving in this way the predator could easily outrun its prey and have a birds eye view of the location ahead to predict their movement. When it eventually swooped down from the branches it used its long finger like claws to dig into their prey's arteries and quickly induce fatal bleeding that would weaken and cripple their prey. They were also equipped with sharp fangs and strong jawbones that could clamp down hard and remain attached to a struggling foe. At its full size the qua'tei could reach a maximum height of over seven feet and weight over three hundred pounds.
It was surprisingly agile despite its weight because of its muscular limbs that could support and manipulate objects more than twice its own weight. The animal was not territorial and only hunted out of hunger, when it was fully fed the qua'tei could lie in a deep sleep for days on end without the need to feed or drink. The Daratur was a colorful species of birds that were famous as tamed pets. They could be trained for a multitude of purposes including alarms that would start their piercing screams once an enemy got close.
It was found in the wild as well as in zu'aan and kin'toni habitats. The bird lived on a strict diet of plants and nuts and could perish in the absence of either. The rilald was an ape like creature that competed with the qua'tei as the top predators of the jungles. They were extremely social creatures and lived in familial groups of five. They lacked any conventional claws and sharp teeth and relied on their sheer power to hit and stun their prey. They were capable of inhibiting both the treetops as well as caves and natural shelters on the ground.
The rilald grew to a maximum height of five foot and weighed over two hundred pounds. They were bipedal but would use all their limbs while sprinting and chasing down prey. The animal had a distinctive coat of light brown hair that allowed them to wick their perspiration as well as kept away the rainfall from their bodies.
