Geography
The Ranageos Dirty Lake is a large region that is centrally placed between the Tayk Springs and the Rynper Jade Valley. The region is considered by many to be extremely pleasant and beautiful, which is in sharp contrast to the Thrand clan and the region’s history. The region is made up of various platform like formations that give a similar look to rolling hills from a distance. The soil in the region is extremely soft allowing for easy plant growth. This gives the entire region an extremely green appearance. Rain is moderately common, so the runoff from the various showers creates mini rocky streams that lead to the region’s namesake lake.
The area around the lake is moderately rocky, with large boulder like formations scattered around the edges. Back when the zu’aan lived in the region, they would use the boulders as jumping points into the lake. The lake despite its name isn’t ‘dirty’ in the classic sense. The lake is always in a state of being disturbed- from the various small streams, the animals living in the lake, winds, or the Thrand, etc. This leads to the lake constantly having sediment from the bottom of the lake being kicked up and giving the dirty or muddy appearance.
The sediment is completely harmless, even in large quantities and is perfectly safe to drink, its only on the individual to get over the cloudy appearance of the water. Homes from the previous zu’aan settlements still remain and are the major homes for the Thrand. They are simple stone and brick cottages, usually open floor plans with a single main bedroom being separated from the rest of the home. The basic upkeep is the one thing the Thrand make sure to keep up on when they stay in their homes and aren’t off fighting. They aren’t trained in proper upkeep though, so they will often just cover any holes that form with a basic clay mixture to keep it covered.
This led to the homes having a shabby and mismatched look over the years. In the middle of their ‘towns’, which are just the cottages, the Thrand built wrestling rings for daily training. It consists of a dirt pit that is dug about 6 feet into the ground; being around 50 feet in diameter, the displaced dirt was used to make a basic sitting area for those watching. Everything in the region that the Thrand built are extremely plain due to their distain for anything viewed as ‘too refined’ which includes art. Kept close to the wrestling pit while in town the Thrand keep their temple tents that they use to worship their two gods.
They do not have a permanent temple set up as they are away often and find it easier to take the whole thing with them when they leave. The only special structure they built was a large area- larger than their wrestling rings, that is used in special fighting events where their best warriors or rival chieftains would fight. They built the area to be larger and capable of holding the entirety of the clan easily where everyone could watch the fight.
Plants
The main plant that makes up most of the green in the Ranageos region is the pheola. The pheola is a wild flower and grass hybrid. For most of the year the plant remains in a grassy type state, growing to about a zu’aan or kin’toni’s ankles- they individual strands are much longer, but the wind of the region is too strong for it to hold itself at a taller height. When a strong wind blows, the Pheola simulate waves like on the lake or low-tide oceans. The individual pheola blades are oblong, while mostly flat they curve on the edges creating an oval shape; each bunch or root is only about the size of a Thrand’s finger, but will grow nearly 4 dozen blades.
When it get to be about spring time in the region the roots start to grow a single stock of wild flowers; in a large field it can result in thousands of flowers taking over the area. Each stock grows about 1 dozen flowers, similar to snapdragons or foxgloves. The flowers are extremely small though, as the stock is rather thin and would be unable to support the weight of larger flowers. The flowers will stay for the better part of a month before they start to die and be blown away. Another plant in the region is the Hailaenudeu. The Hailaenudeu is a floating water plant that lives in Ranageos lake.
It has a similar appearance to a pond weed plant, except for the fact that the plant grows in a red ochre or reddish brown tone. The hailaenudeu plant grows mainly from the bottom of the lake and can reach about 3 feet long before it starts to become weak, or it starts to tangle to the point it breaks from other Hailaenudeu plants growing nearby. It acts as the main source of food for the various aquatic animals living in the lake, as it collects nutrients through photosynthesis as well as collecting the floating sediment in their leaves.
The zu’aan that used to live in the region used to use a small clump of leaves for herbal tea, though the tea was usually extremely bitter so they only made it when they were feeling sick or needed an extra boost in nutrition. The last major plant in the region is the llilanura plant. The llilanura was an evergreen shrub like plant. They were scattered across the region, the entire region being optimal for their growth so it only truly relied on where its seeds fell as to where it would grow. There were a small handful of llilanura plants that grew large enough over time to be considered a tree, though most largely remained in the shrub or bush size category.
The llilanura produced small blue berries for about half the year, specifically during the height of the raining season in the region. This was because the berries were mostly water, and the llilanura plant only kept a small amount of water stored- water was never a problem in the region so there was little to no need to hold on to large amounts of it. So during the raining season, the extra boost of water would be absorbed and directly rerouted to the various berries that were being grown.
Animals
One of the animals that lives in the region is the yalo. The yalo is similar to a prairie dog or meerkat. Yalos live in groups and make dens and tunnel systems underground. Their colonies can number anywhere from a small handful to nearly 100 members. Each colony develops its own communication style, so its very difficult for a yalo if their colony is wiped out to be taken in by another. Each yalo community tends to keep to itself, not interested in interacting with the others in the region, but they are rarely outright hostile to another group- that usually only happens if their colony leader has had issues with any of that specific group’s members at some point.
Their vocals are limited to chirps, sounding similar to birds, so when they are heard they’re often mistaken for a bird. The yalo are small creatures, maxing out at about 2 feet when sitting on their hind legs. Because of this, they are extremely skittish creatures and if spotted by a kin’toni or zu’aan will signal the other in the colony and retreat into their den until the individual leaves the area. Sometimes if they are not sure if the person has left, they will remain in their dens for an entire day just in case.
One of the creatures living in the lake is the reolosuphos. The Reolosuphos is a turtle like creature that if it lives long enough, can grow to the size of a Thrand in shell diameter. Reolosuphos are cold blooded, to its not uncommon to find them lounging on the shore of the lake on colder days to warm themselves back up. They have a pointed snout that they use to dig at the dirt and sediment on the lake floor so they can more easily tear out the hailaenudeu at the lake floor. The reolosuphos do not have specific homes, so they will often nap on various rocks and the shore during warmer hours and eat inbetween their naps.
They never sleep longer than an hour or so at one time as even with their shell that leaves them unprotected from any threat that make come their way- instead they take a series of naps throughout the day so they can stay awake throughout the night so they won’t be caught off guard. The last common creature in the region is the Saestynu. The saestynu is a swan like creature that lives in the region. All the zu’aan that lived in the region before considered the bird “extremely beautiful, but a complete and utter terror”. This is because the saestynu would often chase down any zu’aan child that got within its immediate vicinity, while screeching, for no other purpose than to chase the child away.
They do not limit their torment to just zu’aan, they would also terrorize any Reolosuphos or Yalo they could- pecking at their skin or fur and ripping off what they could to make the creature bleed. A past zu’aan theorized that this was the case due to the fact that a newly hatched to young saestynu is completely harmless due to their beaks still being quite soft, and thus was at the mercy of anything that crossed its path. As such, the adults learned to terrorize anything that would come near them as a warning to stay away from them as a whole- not just adults or their young.
The Thrand find the terrorizing quite amusing, so while near the lake (where the saestynu are often found) they will set up instances for the saestynu to attack other creatures that have been hoisted into their path by that Thrand member.
