Geography

The Tayk Springs is a medium sized peninsula on the West coast. There is a thin coast line around the Western border of the Tayk, though it is more often flooded than not, so it is rarely considered part of the Tayk Springs territory. The region is moderately humid from the sea water, but not salty like other coastal regions. The region contains a few spring areas giving it its name, one being in the central area of the region, another in the northern section about halfway on the peninsula and halfway on the main continent, the last major one being in the south eastern corner of Tayk.

The springs were used when the Ninal were zu’aan as an area for relaxing and play for the children. After the plague killed them off, the springs were not used for a long period of time. The Ninal had a town to the West of the central spring. In the center of the town was a circular town square, where meetings involving the whole town were often held, with a small town hall building at one end for the Ninal government leaders to meet in. Facing away from the town square, creating a ring like encasing was a market with building lining the square and stalls or tents on the other side that the women specifically usually shopped in.

Various smaller stores and storage buildings made up the rest of the central town. The clan members’ homes were east of the central town, almost suburb like, closest to the central spring for their kids. The town had two main medical buildings which were located in the North Eastern and South Eastern corner of the town, closer to the clan’s home than the town center. The region’s army was broken up into 4 quadrants, North East South and West. Each had a specific set of barracks built in the corresponding corners of the region as a front line response to any invasion.

Those that were not in ‘active duty’ were the ones that remained in the town and the one the clan members majorly delt with. Placed in the Eastern quadrant was also the region’s prisons. The town had a small jail until the member was sentenced to their punishment- if they were to continue to be imprisoned then they would be transferred to the prison for the rest of their sentence. The Ninal also had mass graves, as well as a large graveyard in the region. The graveyard were for all their children and adults that did not survive the change when the plague reached the region.

Those graves were made close to the eastern border, so that while still able to visit, was not an immediate visual reminder of their losses. The mass graves were after were for the children they kidnapped that did not survive the change. So that those who came searching for their children did not find them, the made the graves close enough for quick burial, but not so far away that any unwanted visitors could not be easily steered in a different direction.

Plants

The Tayk Springs have a variety of plants in the area. Being right on the coast, they are adapted to more humid air and a more sandy and gritty type of soil. The alaerap is a tropical type tree that grows to 50 feet tall. It needs extremely gritty sand for its roots to properly take hold as they are extremely weak for the tree’s size. There are a series of small branches about every 2 feet starting from about 10 feet off the ground. The Alaerap trees produce a small group spiky ball shaped fruits per branch that are mostly water inside.

There is a thin layer of soft flesh that contains the alaerap seeds and is usually eaten with the outer peel. The fruits have a high level of nutrients and in the past were given to the zu’aan children as a healthy snack while playing outside. After the change though, the Ninal harvest some and export them to neighboring regions as a way to shift attention away from their kidnappings. They also would export dryalorialis, a dandelion like plant. It was used in the past in teas and as home remedies for minor sicknesses or fatigue.

Dryalorialis had become a staple of the zu’aan Ninal people’s nightly meals- for the men so that they wouldn’t be tired in the morning, the children so they would grow strong immune systems, and the women for both fatigue and any minor wounds they got while looking after their children. The Istysura is a lotus or waterlily like plant that grows in the springs. It has a single stem flower that grows from the mud at the bottom of the spring and large pads that cover a good portion of the water they inhabit. A single pad can grow to 10 feet in diameter and easily hold the weight of a zu’aan child without worry.

If dispersed evenly between multiple, the pads can even hold most of an adult zu’aan or kin’toni’s weight with only fractional water intake on the top of the pad. The water in the springs is mildly acidic- not enough to harm but enough so that the pads are discolored to a permanent yellow color instead of the emerald green they would be. The flower though thrives on the acidity and their usual fist sized blooms explode to a near head sized flower. The tyisurria is a wild and vining ground cover type plant that has numerous small blooms along each vine.

The plant struggles with nutrient production and processing so it grows exclusively on graves. It largely consumes the blood from remains in the grave, but will also feed on the other resources produced from the decaying bodies. The tyisurria would usually cover the body within a day of whatever animal finishing with the remains, but as the Ninal started making mass graves, the tyisurria plants would grow on top of and around the loose soil. Over time, the tyisurria seeds were placed in the bodies initially to destroy any way of identifying the bodies that were being buried but later evolved into a process part of the burial rites.

Animals

The eusurllop is a turtle like reptile that makes its homes in the Springs of the region while it is getting ready for its young to hatch. Due to the closeness to the coastline the eusurllop would travel to the beach during hightide, when the coastline was flooded, and make to their nest on the edges of the springs as it was seen as the next safest area. While waiting for their young to hatch, the eusurllop mother would use its beak to dig a trench to the closest coast. When it got close to the coast or almost time for hatching, the eusurllop would return.

Due to the freshly hatched soft shells on the babies, the mother would gather as many in the trench under her and cover them as she made her way to the coastline. Once at the coastline or the end of the trench, the mother would take the lead and guide whatever remaining young there were to the water. From there they would stick together for a few days before they were on their own in the ocean. The eusurllop’s soft shell at hatching was a problem because the ailidil, a crane or stork like bird would often attempt to make meals out of them.

The Ninal children would often make games of protecting the eusurllop from the ailidil as well, waiting until the bird was close before attempting to chase it off from any babies that had fallen behind the others. The Ailidil would often stay at the coast for most of the year, as there was more fish for them to eat. They have a long beak with webbed taloned feet for walking through the water. When it was their mating season is when they would move to the springs- about the same time the Eusurllop were hatching. The ailidil would make nests from the various grass like plants growing around the water, leaving one parent to watch their egg while the other went to hunt.

They usually paid no mind to the zu’aan or later kin’toni of the region as long as they did not attempt to go near their nests. There have been instances where Ninal children while trying to scare off the Ailidil wondered too close and got scratched from their talons. A short pursuit to keep them away later and the Ailidil leave the children alone. Its not often but the ailidil will sometimes use their talons on their feet to catch fish in the springs, though this is usually a lucky or unintentional action as they have very poor eyesight and can only see clearly when things are in motion.

The most common meal of the ailidil is the seulorin. The seulorin is both a freshwater and saltwater capable fish. It was originally from the ocean, though after an extremely large flood in the past, a small handful were deposited in the springs and over time adapted as the salt level slowly decreased. The freshwater Seulorin is nearly indistinguishable from the saltwater save for only a different eye color- the saltwater having a slight ‘aura’ color shift while the freshwater is only a silver grey color.
