Geography
The Qatar Isle was a large plateau that cropped out in the middle of the Qat sea. The large landmass that measured more than a hundred square miles ended with cliffs on all sides that fell off into the sea. These coastal regions were lined with craggy rock formations and sharp edges that could easily puncture and break any vessel's hull when they were dashed against it by the strong waves that dashed against these cliff walls. The waters off the island were famous for their strong currents and rough waves that could toss and tear apart sea-faring vessels.
The only safe channels into the island were a couple of bays that ended in sandy beaches and were surrounded by landmasses on its sides to stop the strong winds. Further inland, the region was characterized by dull and dreary surroundings that were permanently covered by dark grey clouds. The region received a continuous drizzle of cold rain that brought down the temperatures to near freezing levels. The terrain was surrounded in a thick covering of dark grasses and shrubs that continuously absorbed the rainfall and prevented the region from turning into a flooded pool.
The ground was muddy in most parts and turned into boggy marshlands in the areas with lower elevation. This complicated the construction of conventional roads and most parts of the island remained untraversable as a result. The ground also had an abundance of chalky rocks and stones that occurred in random spots all over the region. These would be used by the natives, along with the abundant mud and peat to construct their habitats and other structures. There were many small regions dotted around the island that had concentrated amounts of trees and vegetation.
These would be harvested by the natives for their wood but also posed a threat as they were very prone to lightning strikes and could initiate large fires. The regions croplands were concentrated only along the populated areas and were very tough to maintain. These crops were susceptible to a number of variables such as rain, storms and hailstones- thus, most of the population did not bother or rely on them for sustenance. The region had a cold and dank climate. The rainfall was incessant year-round and could regularly turn into hailstones in the colder months.
The entire region was ravaged by storms all year round that could disrupt agriculture and topple entire structures and newly grown plants that had not had the time to grow deeper roots. The seas were also particularly choppy because of these stormy conditions and the constant battering of the waves against the cliffsides would lead to the creation of many strange rock formations all along the coastline. Another characteristic of the region was the prominence of lightning storms.
These could be deadly in most causes and could strike down and burn both creatures, structures and trees. The vegetation and the wildlife in the region were adapted to survive in these conditions. The vegetation was mainly composed of coniferous trees and hardy grasses that could survive the cold conditions and not choke in the abundant rainfall while the wildlife had warm and greasy coats of fur that could keep them warm while keeping their skin dry.
Plants
The vegetation of the Qatar Isle is mostly composed of coniferous trees and other hardy plants that can withstand the wet and cold conditions of the region. Most of these plants do not shed their leaves like other tropical or temperate vegetation, giving the terrain its distinctive dark green color all year round. The most notable trees in the region include the coniferous achpereng and enthz trees and the pereia grass. The achpereng was a coniferous tree that was the most common variety of tree in the Qatar island.
It was adapted to survive the windy conditions with its deep and strong roots that could withstand the strong winds that blew across the region. Its leaves were needle like and had cones that grew out of its branches. The tree had a great capacity to absorb moisture and could survive even in wet and muddy soil conditions. The wood of the achpereng tree was known for its reliability and high moisture content, and was most commonly used for construction of shelters and structures. The high moisture content made the wood less susceptible to fires caused by lightning strikes.
These trees could grow to a maximum height of over thirty feet and had a large stem to support their incredible height. They had a blueish green appearance and helped to lend the terrain its distinctive color. Its branches were home to many of the birds and squirrel like creatures that lived in these parts. The enthz was another tree that was found in the Qatar isle. It was much rarer than the achpereng but was notable because of its symbolic significance to the people of the region.
The enthz resembled an oak and stood out from among the more tall and lanky trees of the region. The enthz was prized for the quality of its wood and could fetch high prices in the local markets due to its value as a construction resource. Most native zu’aan settlement of the region were built around these trees and the locals were known to worship it as a deity. The enthz bloomed once every year during the small break in rainfall between summer and winter. The flowers were a distinct yellow in color and had many medicinal properties that could ward off common flu and diseases.
The pereia was a moss like shrub that grew on the exposed and wet surfaces in the region. It thrived in the cold and wet conditions of the region and could be found covering the rocky outcrops and roof surfaces of structures. It had a distinct bright green appearance that was used to beautify the surroundings but had little other utility besides it. The carpet like surface of the pereia acted like a natural sponge and could absorb lots of moisture and rain. This surface was very slippery and commonly used by hunters as a trap to catch local wildlife.
Animals
The animals of the Qatar Isle were known for their distinctive adaptations to the wet and cold environments. These included warm and greasy coats of fur that could keep them warm and their skin dry. Some examples of the wildlife in the region include the achidan, a squirrel like creature that lived on the treetops and branches of the achpereng trees, the ageisash and the predatory aquatic beast known as the asang.
The achidan could be found in any wooded region or any spot with a few clumps of trees. It was a small mammal measuring a mere seven inches at its largest sizes and weighing no more than three kilograms. It was very light and agile and was known for its ability to jump between tree branches. Its four limbs were extremely powerful in proportion to its weight and size, allowing it to leap onto tall tree branches. The achidan usually fed on nuts and pinecones that grew on the achpereng trees and occasionally even raid bird's nest for eggs.
They lived in the branches of these trees, sheltering in between stems and leaves or even taking over abandoned bird nests if necessary. They were regarded as an indication of a healthy tree and their disappearance was often followed by deterioration and decay of the wood. The achidan was sometimes consumed by the locals as a substitute for meat when the crops failed. The ageisash was a wild beast that hung out in packs all across the wide open grasslands of the region. These beasts were feral and very territorial. They regularly attacked all sorts of wildlife that wandered into their marked territories including zu’aan and kin'toni.
The Isle would be filled with the howling of these beasts every night as they called out to other packs to assert their dominance. The ageisash was equipped with fang like teeth that were its primary tool for both offense and defense. They could shred their prey in a matter of minutes when they hunted in packs, leaving behind only blood stains, entrails and bones. They stood on four powerful limbs that could power their way through the mud and chase down all manner of prey.
Their looks were akin to that of a hyena, only much stronger and fiercer. Their skin was coated in a dark gray coat of long fur that made them appear much larger than they were. The asang was a predatory aquatic creature that had remarkable size and was known for the ferocity with which it devoured its prey. The asang was a regular sight in the waters off the Qatar Isle and deterred even the bravest swimmers from taking to the seas in calmer conditions. They were colored a dark greyish green that blended in well with the waters and masked their approach when closing in on their prey.
A full grown asang could reach lengths of up to ten feet and could devour smaller to moderately sized fishes' whole.
