History

The Baruea clan is the richest clan in the kingdom of Zelan, they are the owners of the Qaer Meadow Forest, which is a somewhat small region in Zelan of landmass Canlai. The Bazar that takes place at the Qaer meadow forest happens to be not only the biggest gathering of merchants found in the whole continent but is considered to be an impressive competitor with the markets of the swamp cities in the Iturn Dead Swamp of the Ashat nation controlled by the infamous Par Anartah Kin'toni Clan, the markets in those cities are thought to be the undisputed leaders in terms of the volume of trade that is recorded.

More interestingly, the cities of the swamp outpace all markets in volume in terms of the official records, but it is commonly known that a very large part of the trade that happens in the cities occurs out side the ambit of the books and is never really recorded on the official documents of the Ashat nation. Thus although the Qaer meadow forest is truly large and impressive, it is nowhere close to scratching the surface of the heights that the swamp cities have attained in terms of the actual trade that takes place there.

Although it is reasoned that within a few short years the Qaer Bazar will overtake at least the official sale figures of the swamp cities. The comparison between the two markets is also unfair to some degree, as the meadow forest market is a much more recent place of business in comparison to the Iturn dead swamp cities, which have probably been in business since before the kingdom of Zelan ever came to be in existence. Most of the kin'toni nations found in the vicinity of the Erea landmass, are in one way or another related to the Ashat nation.

The Baruea clan is no exception, they claim to have a distant connection to the clan of the Par Anartah, but most of their opponents are not sparing with their remarks about this supposed lineage, and they claim that the Baruea have never even met a member of the fabled Par Anartah clan and they are certainly not related to them. It is believed that the Baruea have claimed the lineage to the Par Anartah in order to bolster their reputation as kin'toni merchants.

Prior to rising to the position of being the owner of one of the most successful market places in the world, the Baruea had little claim to fame, and they were simple agriculturists. Their founder although was a skilled farmer, whose contribution to the founding of the crops that led to the rise of the whole nation as a manufacturing powerhouse is considered to be significant. The founder died a short time after the Bazar had truly begun to become a commercial success, and there were some rumours about how he came to loose his life, some of the opposing merchant clans claim that it was the current head of the clan that masterminded his death.

Psychology

The Baruea are an interesting clan, they are extremely competitive with one another, more than any other clan that exists. They look at other members of their clan as opponents. The only metric that is used to measure the success of a clan member is the amount of money that he has been able to collect to on his own without the use of the clan’s resources. There are family groups in the clan that are generally organised by the clan head, whose position is one of central power, and within the clan, the head is even more powerful than the current monarch.

The old clan head was the founder of the clan itself, who had founded the rituals and the practices that the Baruea follow even till today, however, he was reported dead at the turn of the last century, and since the clan affairs are so insulated from the administration of the monarch, there never was a true investigation as to how the clan founder came to pass away. The funeral of the founder was a lavish affair and included many wonders from around the whole of Taerel, the expense of the event was extravagant and was borne by the whole clan as a whole.

Even in the donations to the conduction of the event, the Baruea competed with one another. The largest donation was made by the current clan head, who is quite a deal more popular than the previous founder, for although the previous clan head was a good deal richer than the new head, but his riches were as a result of his position as the clan head and not truly the result of his enterprising spirit. Even when the rumours about the nefarious nature of the death of the previous head began to fly, very few of the core members of the clan expressed any interest or shock at the prospect of the previous head being killed for his position.

In their opinion the current founder is much more deserving of the position of the head for he has raised himself to the heights of the clan from the absolute bottom on the basis of nothing but his ability to work and trade profitably. The Baruea value money above all else, those that are not able to generate money on their own are not important meets of the clan, and in order to make sure that the kin'toni of the clan continue to feel pressured into earning more money, the clan taxes its own members.

The taxes of the Baruea are meant to help them speed up their earning activities and to collect funds for the improvement of the clan faculties. The Baruea spend lavishly on all their ceremonies and functions, and every family group is further aided by a uniform grant from the clan head so as to make sure that all functions of the clan are of at least a minimum standard. Many have remarked that the competitive nature of the clan is extremely toxic especially for new recruits.

Biology

The kin'toni of the Baruea clan do not differ much in biology as the kin'toni of other clans, in fact the extreme differences in physical abilities is not generally witnessed in kin'toni populations that live outside of the landmass of Erea, and this is probably due to the mutation of the virus that converted the kin'toni in this particular region. The virus is not truly discussed in the open on the continent of Erea, where they claim that the kin'toni of the world were created by nature itself.

Or like the Itkali who believe that kin'toni came about without ever having gone through any lab or anything of that nature. That sort of culturally backward region was never really accepted in the landmass of Canlai, here it is openly discussed that the kin'toni of the world were created due to virus that the zu'aan scientists were developing in order to create a breed of super soldiers, they lost control of the process and the virus became loose. Some of the more culturally backward regions adopted this change to be some sort of divine intervention.

And instead began to come up with religions that fit their nonsensical beliefs, and although kin'toni of the region are known to follow a few of the religions that originated on the landmass of Erea, most of them actually don’t subscribe to the fantastical beliefs of the Erea, and not all of them hold the view that nature is supreme and above reproach. The Zelan people in particular are said to care for little else besides wealth and resources, even their neighbours, the Nara pretend to be dictated by a higher moral code only on the surface.

Like the administrations of the Erean kingdoms and nations. Besides the Turenth Lush River, the other nations are bigoted and small minded and their people are very reluctant to face the reality of the world. The Canlai landmass has a very moderate climate, and most of the regions located on the landmass can be said to share somewhat of the same weather pattern, this is mostly because of the smaller size of the whole continent and also because unlike Erea, the Canlai landmass is located almost completely in the tropic zone of the planet.

Erea on the other hand is much larger and extends well into the frigid Zone, the tropical zone as well as the temperate zone of the planet. This gentle weather across the whole continent is said to be one of the reasons that the kin'toni of the region have not had cause to develop any abnormal mutations that would lead them to adapt better to the extreme condition. The biology of the whole Canlai landmass is currently being studied by a university located close to the capital of the Zelan nation, and is funded mostly by monarchy of the Zelan, and though the Nara also contribute to the research, they do not generally advertise their involvement as greatly as the Zelan leaders tend to do.

Their skin is light green-grey in color. They have dark yellow irises with white sclerae and vertical slit pupils.

Culture

The people of Baruea clan as state earlier, are extremely competitive with one another, they don’t really believe in coddling their clan members and certainly feel that the more pressure is applied the stronger the clan member is likely to. It must be noted that although the ideology of the previous clan head was what begun the process of creating such a competitive culture, it soon took a life of its own that was well beyond what he had imagined. The nature of the competition had grown so fierce, that it was openly being discussed that the clan head was a failure as he had failed to produce even one remotely successful venture over the whole of the last century.

The manner in which the culture had been designed, it had meant to make the cream of the clan to rise to the top which was to be their place of stay, but under the previous clan head, there was no concept of what was good, since he sat at the top and people quite casually remarked that his position should be awarded to a more deserving candidate, in fact during the last stages of his life, the clan head had begun to avoid public functions, and rarely ever gave incentives to the other clan members in the form of rewards and competitions.

Therefore, if the clan is so callous with their supposed leader, who according to the ideology that is taught to the members of the clan is supposed to hold a position higher than the monarch of the country itself, one cannot even begin to imagine the condition of the kin'toni that are at the bottom of the pyramid. Truly, the things the lowest rung of the clan have to bear with can be categorised as nothing else besides horrifying. The suicide rate among these individuals is much higher than the average number of the rate among the other kin'toni clans as well as the other rungs of society in the same clan.

It is easier for many of the new initiates to simply end their lives than to live in the crazy conditions and rules that the new imitates are meant to live by when they first join the clan. The kin'toni of the clan don’t really mind that so many of the kin'toni are not able to live with the pressure and the fact that they are the richest kin'toni clan in the kingdom of Zelan, they are always able to have a near endless supply of humans to convert and keep the lowest level filled.

But it must be understood that the kin'toni don’t really have a twisted sense of pleasure that drives them to create such awful conditions for the kin'toni that wish o job but its is rather the fact that they believe that their system works, and as evidence they have the remarkably successful current clan head who rose precisely in the way that the old clan had envisioned and so there is more than ever a new fervour for the system that exists.

Government

The kin'toni of the Baruea clan are very throughly infiltrated into the government of the Zelan kingdom, and the leading reason for this is the nature of their occupation, they are among the largest traders in the world, and it is said that if you are wearing cloth made of the zeal fabric, it is almost certain that the fabric passed through the hands of one of the Baruea clan members. They have large manufacturing hubs that are located close to the fields in which the massive amounts of crop that is required to create the fabrics is grown.

The past of the clan also means that they are well versed in the figures and processes that are involved in the agriculture aspect of their trade. The clan members don’t just trade in the fabrics of Zelan, anymore at least, the success of the Zelan’s manufacturing and selling of the fabric has meant that the merchants of the clan have a lot of capital that they can reinvest into other ventures. The latest piece of legislation that is said to be sourced from the clan head of the bare clan is one that deals with the breeding of animals.

In particular dangerous animals like the hogs of the Qaer meadow, that were at one point completely annihilated due to the failure of the Zelan authorities in taming them. It is being said that the clan head believes that the animals found in nature are the next resource that the Baruea will come to socialise in, he is particularly impressed with the accounts of the zu'aan that were said to have twisted al the animals of the world to fulfil either one functions or the other, and since the subject of these practices is so taboo among the other kin'toni clans.

The clan head believes they will be able to create a large amount of profit without having to worry about too much competition. He wants to begin by supplying animals that can be used in warfare, since the real profit for the Zelan fabrics only came about when the fabrics were moulded and shaped to fit purposes in the battlefield, the kin'toni of the Baruea clan believe that by breeding and training animals for war, not only will they be able to make a lot of money, but also be able to control the wars, in that they will be able to choose a wining side by trading with them their best animals.

And with the other side they Amy trade weaker animals that would not do so well in the fight itself. This is of course, an idea that has only begun to be outlined, but the passing of the legislation that would essentially allow them to do this is a large step that may have proved completely impossible in other nations like Ashat and Itkal which believe so whole heartedly in the prominence of nature and its components, so much so that they are above being changed and moulded.

Military

The Baruea have no relation to the armed forces of the Zelan nation, in fact it would be accurate to say that the kingdom of Zelan does not actually have a national armed force, they are primarily reliant on foreign mercenary bodies. Their relationship with the Mora Ava clan is particularly rich since the forces of the Mora Ava have been engaged in the Nakeg dense forest battling an infestation of the zu'aan, and are probably the largest body engaged by the Zelan nation. It is indeed a unique situation, but if one were to look at the neighbouring nations of the Zelan.

It would be understood that there is truly little danger to the country itself and as such the kin'toni really do not need a very thriving martial force. Besides being isolated physically from the more aggressive kin'toni nations like the Itkali or Ashatan people, the Canlai landscape is also very difficult to approach even from the ocean. Most of the beaches on the continent are large sheer cliffs that make invasion a complete impossibility, or one that would lend to very little actual harm done since only the ports could ever be attacked and even they could not be held for too long.

As the owner ground would make them susceptible to all sorts of attacks from the cliffs that overlook the Ocean as well as the ports that are built there. There is one region of the landmass that is vulnerable, but recently through the means of a three way agreement, the Nara, Zelan and the pirate nation of Tharis were able to come up with an arrangement. The Tharis nation has now formed a satellite city of their kingdom on the landmass of Canlai, and it is said that the move was carried out in anticipation of a sea based attack force that the Ashatans may send forward.

Other wise, even the rocky relationship with the Nara, who are undoubtedly the Zelan nation’s worst enemies, have not committed to any high degree of fighting with each other. This placid and calm nature has come to be thoroughly imbibed in the mental outlook of the people, who rarely if ever consider martial action when dealing with a problem in international affairs. The Baruea on the other hand, have been able to make a pretty penny by customising their products to suit the needs of war, and the Ashatans are by far their biggest customers.

Although the Adon Kingdom is coming in as a close second, while the Itkali are certainly the nation that the least amount is traded with, and this is mostly because of the rough history they share with one another. The real problem with the Zelan and the Itkali relationship has to do with how the kin'toni of Itkal believe that the kin'toni of Zelan abandoned them at the time of the Shattering. However, trade continues between the two nations, but not directly as the Zelan merchants have their wares transported to Itkali kingdom from Nara ports.

Religion

The kin'toni of the Baruea clan have absolutely no belief system of their own, they believe that they are far too logical and invested in the real world to worry about the after life or to consider how a force of nature feels about their actions and conduct. In this way, the Baruea are a little more progressive than the kin'toni that worship the sun or the ones that worship a long dead kin'toni, that is not to say that no kin'toni in Zelan worship any god, but religious life is not one of their primary concerns or even a secondary concern.

To them, the most important thing about life is simply how you live it in the present, and though some may criticise their viewpoint or even claim that theirs is completely inaccurate, it has to be realised that the lack of influence of the religious element in their polity, this country has been able to maintain a much better relationship with other kin'toni. It is certainly true that a lot of the conflict that is ongoing between the kin'toni of neighbouring nations has either to do with money or with ideology.

And the wars that come about due to the demand for money or land are generally those that are also resolve much more quickly and with less bloodshed. On the other hand the wars that come about due to ideological differences are never truly resolved and can lead to long winded wars that can end up taking several thousand lives before it becomes too expensive to conduct the war, even after battle has stopped, rarely due ideological opponents normalise their relationship.

The most appropriate example for this situation is the rivalry that exists between the kin'toni of Itkal and Ashat, who were at one point in time one nation that could easily have been considered to be the strongest kin'toni nation in the world. However, the kin'toni of both nations developed differing religions and their opinions clashed on something as basic as the origin of kin'toni. While it has been centuries since the nations have separated, and begun the wars, there is still no end in sight.

At present the kin'toni nations have at least a dozen different active battlefronts, with a minimum of two major frontiers that kill several hundred kin'toni through the course of a singular year. The Baruea have instead capitalised the presence of these religions and created products that appeal to the average devotee and have been able to generate astonishing profits for their trade. The kind of products that they produce are targeted towards the most zealous of the kin'toni.

And include clothes with religious imagery that not only causes further divisions in society but also leads to steady and ever growing sales of their products. The most profitable piece of clothing that the Baruea produce is a tunic that is roughly embroidered with the meeting of the First Emperor, Dedunova Eelmalera, and the shepherd in the dense forests of the Cataract bog.

Miscellany

The kin'toni of the Baruea clan are the wealthiest clan in the kingdom of Zelan, and this effectively means that the kin'toni of this clan are known to be some of the most powerful individuals in the whole kingdom. Their position of power has meant that the Baruea kin'toni clan’s hands can be traced in most of the important events that take place within the domain of the Zelan kingdom, for example, it was the Baruea kin'toni clan that was responsible for finalising the alliance with the kin'toni of the Tharis nation.

Without which the continent of Canlai would have been susceptible to attacks from the kin'toni nations of the Erean continent. The Baruea have been trying to gain greater amount of access to the unique ships of the Idril clan, the ships which have allowed the kin'toni of the Idril clan to dominate the oceans so throughly. At present, besides the zu'aan cities, it is is the Idril clan that can be said to be the undisputed champions of the domain of the ocean. It is speculated that the kin'toni of the Baruea clan are trying to move into the shipping sector.

And that is why they have been maintaining really close contact with the kin'toni of the Idril clan. There are other merchant clans in the realm of Zelan that are reluctant and wary of this association between the kin'toni of the Idril clan and the kin'toni of Baruea clan, as they feel that the clan will become far too large and rich if they are able to secure the secrets of the Idril clan and their shipping. Other clans however are not worried by these developments, in fact they are quite satisfied with the Baruea spending all their energy on trying to woo the Idril Clan.

This section of kin'toni is unconcerned as they feel that the Baruea clan members are barking up the wrong tree, for the secrets of the Idril clan or rather the Tharis nation’s shipping have been closely guarded throughout their years of struggle, and the kin'toni chose not to part with that information even when they were supremely poor, and thus there is no way that they would wiling part with the technical details of their ships now that they are truly in the midst of their ascendancy.

The Baruea also happen to be a very outgoing clan of kin'toni, although they call the Qaer meadow their home, there are rarely more than a tenth of the whole clan’s strength posted in the meadow forest itself. Most of the kin'toni can be found in the distant parts of the landmass and sometimes even on remote landmasses that have yet to be fully occupied within the territory of the kin'toni folk. It is preachily this wanderlust that the kin'toni of the Baruea clan seem to be possessed with which has meant that the kin'toni are able to explore resources and practices that the common merchant simply does not have the opportunity to take part in, and it is this kind of information that eventually leads to their success in terms of trade.
