Geography

The Xrana terrain was a long and flat tract of land that stretched for thousands of miles on all sides. It had a heavy covering of tall grasses and the occasional forested lands that provided the locals with resources for creating their tools and works of art. They did not carry out any large-scale wood cutting operations in the land like other civilizations since the inhabitants of the Xrana were more reliant on temporary structures such as yurts that were made of animal hide. The Xrana landscape had a distinctive yellow tint in summer when the tall grasses of the region would be in full bloom along with the help of the consistently sunny days.

They would turn a shade of dull red and brown during the winter months when the vegetation would begin to wither. The forests of the Xrana were very thickly overgrown pockets of tree and shrub growth that was very tough to navigate for both the mounts and zu'aan of the region. They were more valued for the wildlife that they contained within them which the zu'aan depended on for their nutrition. There was not a lot of untraversable land in the Xrana steppe due to the flat nature of the terrain.

There was not a lot of elevation changes in the region and any landforms such as mountains and cliffs were absent from the region. The lack of these features left the region vulnerable to natural calamities such as storms and tornadoes that could travel unobstructed throughout the entire region. Strong winds ravaged the land all year round and could bring down temperatures drastically during the colder months. The region was drained by many slow rivers that flowed idly and helped to support the wildlife of the region.

The Xrana region experienced three distinct seasons in a year. These were the warm and relatively dry summers when all the wildlife would flock to the drying rivers to parch their thirst. The temperatures would soar to a high of thirty degree Celsius. The grasses would become a light golden in color while their stalks became dry and husky. The skies were free of clouds during these periods and the region received an abundance of sunlight. Summer in the region was quickly followed up by the short monsoon months when the region would experience constant rainfall.

The rivers would become full again during this period and the surface would be covered in a mixture of mud and slush. The grasses and flowers of the land would be in full bloom during this season and the animals would have to migrate away from the rivers which would be overflowing their banks. The end of the monsoon would signal the start of winter. Many cold winds would start to blow across the region and the temperatures would drop to single digits. The region would experience regular frosts and hailstones during this period along with occasional rainfall.

The vegetation would become a dull in color as the sunlight began to wane in winter.

Plants

The Xrana region was filled with only a small variety of plants that were indigenous to the region. The flat lands had a few varieties of grasses that covered every inch of exposed soil. Some of the herbivorous species of cattle lived off these grasses. They were many different types of these grasses, some more nutritious than the other. Their nutritional properties could be deduced from their distinctive colors with the more nutritious plants coming in bright shades of green and more concentrated along the river banks of the region where the soil was more fertile with adequate water content.

The Xrana steppes were also filled with many thick forests that were spread out all over the lands. These densely overgrown concentrations of trees and vegetation supported many wildlife and also provided the region with much needed wood resources that the natives used for their tools and equipment. Some of the most recognizable plants of the region included the en-leress and tin'san grass, the issmroth tree that grew in the forests and the rodrany shrubs that covered the forest floor of the region.

The en-leress was the most common type of grass that grew on the steppes. It could grow to a maximum height of over five feet and would change color and properties according to the seasons. During the monsoon months the grass would be a healthy shade of green with pliable and fleshy stalks that would progressively get drier and duller during the winters, till it reached a dry husk-like structure in summer. It would be a light golden color by this time and contained no nutritional value whatsoever.

It could catch fire easily at this stage and was a natural fire hazard. The tin'san was a more nutritional plant that only grew along the banks of the rivers. The plant required a constant supply of water as well as fertile ground to grow and was a regular food source for the animals of the region. The tin'san was colored a bright green and had a fleshy and moisture filled stalk that could quickly fatten up the animals that grazed here. The issmroth trees grew in the forested regions of the Xrana steppes.

They were the most common type of trees and bore many close resemblances to other temperate deciduous vegetation. These trees could grow to a height of twenty meters and had very strong roots to resist the pull of the winds and storms that constantly ravaged these lands. The wood of this tree was used by the zu'aan to create many of their tools and weapons as well as for their artistic carvings. The Rodrany were a type of shrub that grew very close to the ground, up to a maximum height of two feet.

It had many separate branches that were closely swarmed together and coated the forest floor with tiny thorns that grew out of their stems. The stem as well as the leaves of these plants were colored a dull shade of dark-green and was very hard to distinguish from the floor. They were a hazard to anyone walking without any protection for their feet.

Animals

The Xrana forest region was home to a wide variety of wildlife that would roam across the vast distances of the prairies in search of food, water, prey or to escape predators. The animals had to be quick in order to survive in the cutthroat environments of the Xranna. This was the natural way of life in the vast open distances of the steppes where the animals had to be fast enough to catch prey or to avoid predators. These animals also had to constantly be on the move in order to adapt to the conditions of the region that changed from season to season.

The wildlife would spread out across the entire extent of the steppes during the wet and winter seasons but would be forced to migrate towards the rivers during the warm and dry summer seasons when the land would be parched. Some of the most common animals in the region were the neirine- a fast predator that could track its prey across many miles, the wyron- a grass eating animal that lived in herds, the ciassyer- a domesticated animal that was commonly used as mounts by the zu'aan of the region and the moum- a fast and agile herbivore that was also domesticated and bred by the zu'aan.

The neirine was one of the deadliest predators in the Xrana region. It had feline features and could crouch very low to the ground to blend into the grasses and sneak up on its prey. It could grow to lengths of over six feet and a tremendous amount of weight that helped it overpower its prey once it pounced on them with its sharp claws and fangs. The neirine followed the migration of other animals of the region such as the wyron on which it relied for its food and sustenance. The neirine lived in small packs with a designated alpha and members under it.

They would occasionally hunt together when attacking large groups of prey but mostly carried out these activities by themselves. The wyron was a grass eating mammal that lived in large herds in the steppes. They could reach up to five feet when fully grown while stretching for over ten feet in length. They were very heavy and could provide enough meat to feed an entire zu'aan colony for months. They were also covered in a thick coat of fur that was commonly used by the native zu'aan for their clothes.

The ciassyer was an animal that was commonly used as a mount by the native of the region. It could grow to a height of over six feet and existed freely in the wild before they were domesticated and used as mounts. They were versatile and could survive off all kinds of diets including meat. They allowed the zu'aan to travel around the region quickly and with minimal fuss, since they required very little maintenance. The moum was a type of herbivore that was commonly bred by zu'aan families and carried along with them in their travels.

The moum served both as a source of meat and milk and was a valuable resource for trading in the region. They could grow only to a maximum size of over two feet and could easily be handled by a single zu'aan.
