Scavenger tribe, dwell in remote outposts of civilization, wraith like

History

Originally city dwellers, when they were struck by the kin’toni plague this tribe were shunned by society and fearing for their safety they escaped from the city and found solace in the furthest outposts, often hiding in garbage sites and ruined buildings full of trash where they would scavenge for any sustenance they could find. They became thin and emaciated creatures with little or no strength and often would hunt in groups preying on any solitary zu’aan. They could find that had lost their way and accidentally stumbled upon them. This tribe were not the most physically fit specimens when they lived.

And so as kin’toni they are scrawny and wraithlike. Finding it hard to successfully kill victims they learned to operate in groups, like hyenas or vultures and would gang up on solitary victims. They may go as far as attacking two or three zu’aan if they were in a big enough group. Due to their lack of strength and power they have never been incredible hunters and over the years have physically manifested certain traits on account of their poor diet. Scrawny and emaciated, these wraith like creatures or horrid little things. They have made their homes in garbage sites, trash dumps.

Old ruins and other disgusting places where even rats would not dare to go. They became hermits early on in their mutation process They have got more and more frightened of others as time has gone by. They have learned to get by on small amounts of blood. They hunt in groups, feed in groups, sleep in groups. They are terrified of not being able to defend themselves so they stay together as a pack at all times. They have had small skirmishes with other clans over territory and sometimes zu’aan feasting. But not much as they have learned to stay away from society at all costs.

They have been known to move along the outskirts in-between city and wasteland. Originally they were city dwellers, timid people who worked together in clerical duties in an entire building. They were all affected by the disease and with a hunger for blood they began to attack other city dwellers. However as they were quite week they were easily defeated and quickly learned that they had to hunt as a group in order for there to be any success. It wasn’t long before the military were sent to eradicate them. It was at this point that they began to flee from the city, fearing for their very survival.

All though these memories have now fallen into a haze as they live their life almost as if they are in a fever, brought on by their weakened states of malnutrition. They have never forgotten their awful beginnings and the terror and trauma they went through before they found salvation in the garbage ridden outskirts. They have become exceedingly nervous and do not like to leave their comfort zone. They would rather go through long periods of malnutrition then risk conflict, danger and probably destruction.

Biology

Their eyes have dark purple irises with white sclerae and horizontal rectangular pupils Thin, scrawny, wraithlike bodies, these are weak and emaciated creatures who spend most of their times in the throes of malnutrition and starvation. They do not have much strength and they get tired very quickly. They have become hunched and gnarled over the decades and often they favour one leg over the other and will drag one behind them as they walk. Their skin is grey and pale. They have very heavy breathing and they rasp whilst they speak with their almost snake like tongues.

They have webbed feet and fingers, small crooked fangs. Their finger nails and toe nails however are very sharp. When they work together as a group they compensate each other and are almost like one entire mass of Gollum like being. Decapitations and impaling through the heart will kill them. They also will be killed by fire instantly and direct exposure to sunlight will destroy them. Their skin is very dry and flaky, however it is also hard and callous, so some force has to be put behind a weapons thrust to wound them. Depending on what level of starvation their body is in, they can take anything from five days to five weeks to heal.

They sleep for long periods of time. Their blood is a thick shade of green black. They tend to store blood and nutrients in their body for longer and survive on less. Their bodies have developed a system where it breaks down the consumed blood in stages. Some will be stored and a small portion will instantly be turned into energy. They can survive for long periods of time on little to no nutritional value. Their organs are grey and almost like congealed sea weed, though quite hard and spongy. Their cell structure is slow but resilient. Their bodies can be damaged easily but they are also quite resilient and will heal effectively if given enough time.

They generally are slow and have movement issues as they are hunch and often will drag a limb favouring other parts of their anatomy. However they have learnt to use the weight of structures, things and people around them to give them more balance. They tend to get in close on a victim and dig in with their claws and teeth hard. Their teeth and claws are razor sharp and they have strong grips as they pinch in close. They have very long tongues and are kind of snake like. They have a very foul aroma, and make some disgusting sounds, almost lizard like. They have not the muscular strength to wield weapons.

They are nasty when in close battle and bite and scratch things and people. Their heart beat is very slow. They are very resilient and can endure discomfort and hardships. Their bodies have become used to suffering, so they a high tolerance for pain.

Culture

Scavengers, they are very much pack creatures and move in groups. They always feel safer in numbers. For this tribe, their existence is about survival. What they lack in strength they more then make up for in cunning and endurance. They dwell in dirty trash ridden dumps and abandoned buildings around the outskirts of civilisation. They may sometimes brave the very outer rim of dwellings occupied by zu’aan. But usually only when starvation gets the better of them and always in larger numbers of packs. They live day to day and are fatalists. They believe that their own existence always hangs precariously in the balance.

And that they could be destroyed at any second. They spend a lot of their time in hiding, skulking and lurking in secret places. They are not very well organised and do not have a leader as such. Although there are important chieftains in their clan and they often elect members to lead them into hunting missions. Their goverening structure changes from day to day and they choose leaders depending on what is needed that day. They do not think in long term. They live for the moment and are a frightened, paranoid tribe, always mindful to stay hidden as much as possible.

They believe that ‘tomorrow is never promised’ and they will do what ever it takes to survive. If they did not need blood to keep their physical form existing, they probably would never leave the hideous places that they occupy. At night they huddle in closely together in their secret places and speak of many things concerning the clan ranging from their past, the days events and what tomorrow may bring. They will always favour a domain where they can all rest with their backs to the walls, preferably in corners where they cannot be seen and where they also have a good view of the entrances and exits.

This is just in case they should be attacked whilst they sleep. When they are unconscious they are deathly silent and will often sleep under debris and trash, so that they are hidden completely from view. They never stay in the same place for too long and move up and down the peripheries of the outskirts of civilised places, doing their best to avoid being noticed. They stay in packs for safety, however they are not loyal to one another and if the pack should ever be outnumbered, in grave danger or attacked by larger forces, they will each individually run for cover.

This is not through selfishness, but through fear. They are slippery cowardly creatures and can be self serving. Usually they prefer to stay together and hide away from the world. They will often tell each other stories concerning the many evils of the world and how they are better off away from everything and everyone. Culturally they have all the traits of scavengers, with little or no interest in world politics or any large goals. Survival is all they seek.

Government

Their government is appointed on a daily basis depending on the tasks that lye ahead for them with each day. They usually pick a chieftain to leed them through the day that has skill sets that are best suited for solving what ever problems they forsee occurring that night. When they awake they have a conference about what they think should be done, what they need, what should be gathered, should they hunt. This debate can often last quite a while and sometimes they will start to fight with one another and their arguments will usually turn to violence. After a while, the most reactionary of them that day will often stop the fight and call them names.

This will be the person they think best suited to be their leader for the day as they show decisiveness. Their personalities change on a daily basis due to varying levels of starvation. Which is why they change their leaders on a daily basis, always picking whoever is stronger in mind and body at that given time. They rarely ever fight over who will be the leader each day as none of them really want the responsibility. Perpetual starvation has made it hard for their brains to function normally and they are kind of insane, prone to bickering amongst each other.

They would rather stay hidden and not go into the world at all. None of them seek power so the title of leadership is not something that interests them enough to fight over their individual rights for the position. Usually one of them will get sick of listening to the bickering and will volunteer to be the leader. This normally is good enough for the rest of them. Often if there is a serious conundrum ahead, they will vote for the person best suited to lead them that day. This would often be the case on a hunt day where they desperately need some blood.

This is saved for times when they feel so sick that they might collapse any second. They are terrified on contact with others or conflict, however when they do fight, they can often be highly vicious. They are anarchists in nature, have no interest in politics, power or what ever else is happening in the world outside. They feel that they are bound together by terrible misfortune. Existence for them, is all about pain and suffering, the terrible discomfort that they feel never goes away. They almost revel in the misery. They are far too busy with survival to worry about give each other titles or making laws.

Their society is based on existing. Rules and laws are not needed and are seen as a pointless activity that serve nothing or no one. They say “no one can break a law if you don’t have any”. They remember their old lives before the plague took them as if they are distant memories in a blurry haze. Most of their day to day life is spent in delirium.

Military

Generals and leaders of their militia are elected on a daily basis and are based on a number of facts including physical and mental health and well being, determination, individual plans or concepts on how best to navigate the problems of the day. They normally try to avoid conflict, but if it is absolutely unavoidable, their strategy is to fight together as a group and swarm in on the enemy, attacking them from all sides. They tend to use found materials and weapons to arm themselves with and will use these to break past the enemies defences. Then often they will discard their weaponry.

Surround the enemy and attack them from all angles on a close proximity using their teeth and claws to bite and scratch, literally tearing their foe to shreds. They tend to shy away from wars and battle when possible. They hunt for zu’aan blood when absolutely vital. Usually when they have physically reached a point that they can no longer survive without an intake of fresh blood to sustain them selves. They also organise scavenging missions where they will look for raw materials, weapons, or structures to add to whatever dwelling they have made their own. On many occasions some smaller groups go out on scouting missions.

Looking for new dwellings, as they do not like to stay in the same place for too long. They also keep an eye out for any wandering zu’aan that they may be easy targets. In these missions they move in smaller groups and are broken into the ones in the middle looking for materials, dwellings or victims and the ones on the outer rim, keeping a watchful eye for enemies. If they get too close to danger, they will usually make a hasty but silent retreat. They put a lot of effort into avoiding conflict of any kind and will constantly scout the immediate areas where they currently reside.

And also will look out for other suitable places to make temporary dwellings. Their military avoidance tactics involve constant movement and an awareness of their surroundings and any changes within these surroundings. If other tribes appear to be getting too close, they will move silently to the next dwelling that they have spotted. They are constantly surveying the area around them for both disturbances, and also easy targets. When they kill or capture zu’aan, they make sure to clean up the area fully and leave no trace or evidence of a disturbance.

They put a lot of organisation into their scouting missions and they believe the best for of defence is to remain as unseen as possible. Hunting missions are kept to a minimum. Usually if battle is unavoidable, the most worthy will be elected as the military leader and will devise a plan. This will often depend on the terrain they are fighting on. When ever they are in a new dwelling they have a lot of surveillance missions so that they know the land inside out and can respond effectively to any given situation.

Religion

They are totally not spiritual creatures and are very negative in their philosophies. They believe that the world is a terrible and cruel place and that imminent destruction is merely waiting around the corner, ready to destroy them at any second. They have memories of these past, but these are distant and in a haze. This is almost as if they are mythologies that never happened. They have discovered that their own survival is rooted in how strong they are as a pack. They even physically move together, often supporting each others body weight. They are never alone as they do not feel safe this way.

They work together, sleep together and move together when they travel. When they rest they are in the same dwelling, often huddled together for protection. They will converse and communicate with each other about all that has happened to them as a tribe on that given night. Each is allowed their say in their opinions of how the night has gone and what the next one may bring. They do not dwell too much on the past and think much about what may happen next. Although they have no priests or organised religion as such, they speak of many philosophical things together when they are huddled up in whatever lair they are skulking in.

And will offer advice and ‘spiritual thoughts’ on the development of each creature. They no longer see them self as individuals though and identify as a group or as a pack. They speak of themselves in the ‘we’ rather then in the ‘I’ and all have the role of leader and priest. Their religion and spirituality is very universal within their group and is based on more physical interests. Things pertaining to the landscape around them, their daily goals, what they can see and touch rather then hypothetical or mythical ‘rubbish talk’ as they like to call it. They are anarchists and very dysfunctional.

Although they operate entirely as a group, they are self-cantered creatures and will do anything to further their own survival. They function on a religion of reality. They see the world as it is, for what it is. There is no divine reasoning for anything. They are fatalists and believe terrible things happen all the time. They question even what may happen in an hours’ time and so they live their existence permanently in a state of right here, right now. The philosophers power in the tribe is usually given towards who ever has the more energy to communicate about the things which are important to them.

Or has more knowledge on the subject. Power structures, religious teachings and religious leadership in the clan is always fluctuating on a daily basis. Their religion is the religion of survival and the world is purely rooted in the physical one. They are only interested in what is right in front of them.
