Geography

The Woryn Boreal Shield is one of the most geographically diverse individual territories in the whole of Taerel. The region is rather small for the amount that is contained, only being a mid-sized region leaning on the smaller side. This is due to the fact that the region borders a fault line, creating a mountain range, while also being a quadripoint for the neighboring desert, forest, plain and hill regions. Being so close allowed the region to adopt aspects of the others while not being exclusively beholden to their climates. The mountains created a number of streams that flow into various lakes that formed in the region. The largest is located on the plains side of the region.

There are some smaller streams that flow into the connected region, acting as one of the main water sources for the neighboring region. The second is in the trough of the hills opposite the plains, closest to the mountain. At one time it was the largest, but after years of overflowing, it created a large river that drains a large amount of the water that flows from the mountain. The smallest of all the lakes is in the desert area of the region. When at its driest, it’s the size of a small pond, but during the fullest its like a small oasis for the area. The different climates are extremely close, but are difficult to trek anywhere other than the plains as there are significant altitude changes that allow for the regions to exist. A trip from the desert to the neighboring plains could take upwards of 3 days or more as the desert has extremely large sand dunes that make climbing them an extreme hassle.

The forest borders the mountain, and take it rocky quality, making it an extremely difficult and hazardous hike through the area. Other than the plains, the hills are the easiest, but still rather difficult as they are clustered extremely close. They too are rather slippery, being a sand and rock gravel like mixture. Its unsafe to travel in the valley between them as there’s major landslide risk. Due to this, any travel requires hiking up and down each hill along the path to the person’s destination. Each region is typically in the ‘mild’ climate for that biome type; deserts hot but not extreme as well as cool but not freezing at night; the forest cool and slightly humid but not suffocatingly; the plains warm with light breezes but not extreme winds; and the hills similar to the plains.

The only ‘extreme’ in the region is the mountain range. At its base its ‘mild’ but quickly as its ascended becomes harsh with high winds, near constant snowfall and consistent freezing or below temperatures. The plains is the most common meeting point for any ‘guests’ in the region, as it’s the least grueling. The other will accept travelers, but more often direct them to the plains as other groups find the travel through the region too grueling. Each area has a Loremdra group residing there, though the mountains are exclusively at the base as constant living at the altitude was deemed ineffective for resource use and the costs greatly outweighed the few to no benefits.

Plants

  • mono'kee

The mono'kee is known for its vibrant colors and pungent scent. It has a strong fruity scent that may confuse those who aren't careful during the night. Although beautiful on the outside, consumption of the flower could be very lethal.

  • kelo-kelo

The kelo-kelo is a form of fungus that can only be found in the natural bodies of water in the Woryn Boreal Shied. Its outer shell is rather rough and bumpy, while its insides are smooth and tender upon consumption.

  • win'ike

The win'ike is a rope like plant that wraps itself around the surrounding trees. At a quick glance, one may not be able to see its subtle movements, but upon close inspection one would be able to see it slowly tighten is grasp on whatever may be caught in its grasp.

  • mehloe

The mehloe is a tall tree with a thin trunk. It rockets high up in the sky and sways subtly with the wind. The mehloe is very fragile to the touch with its bark coming off with little to no effort, causing it to be more vulnerable to most animals.

  • toedo

The toedo is a rather large bush that holds natural berries that have a bitter-sweet smell to them. The fruit color can range from a dull purple to a deep ocean blue. Although safe to consume, too much could have a negative impact on the stomach.

  • xia'win

The xia'win a plant found in both open areas with plenty of direct sunlight, to glistening bodies of water. On land, there are usually enough to cover a huge area of land in a blanket of pinks and reds. In the water, they can be seen in small batches of blue and green.

  • awan'ee

The awan'ee is a plant that stems from beneath the land and sprout out of exposed tree trunks. They absorb the life and tap from the open trunks to gain its energy and survive. But during the coldest of nights, they shrivel up and break free from their roots.

  • qui'yin

The qui'yin is a beautiful plant that stems from the highest points of the Woryn Boreal Shield that can only be found where the harshest winds blow. They bloom in the coldest of weathers and close shut in the hottest, waiting to open back up again.

  • jehns

The jehns is a type of tree that grows near larger bodies of water. They are short and solid, leaving them harder to get through. Its bark is capable of "mending" itself back together if a small gash is left on them. Once fully cut, it will render them unmendable.

  • tero'ren

The tero'ren is a small, moss like plant that grows almost everywhere, covering certain parts of the Woryn Boreal Shield in a layer of green. Its very absorbent and is capable of sucking up any form of liquid, no matter its density.

  • gingin

The gingin is a poisonous fungus that grows on the oldest trees in the Woryn Boreal Shield. It lacks a scent but has a very pungent taste that leaves your mouth numb for a while. Those who are native to the land are able to distinguish them from their cousin fungi, the kelo-kelo.

Animals

The Woryn Boreal Shield, due to its large diversity in biomes created a large variety of creatures through the region. The majority of the creatures in the region stayed in their respective biomes. They were similar to the common type for each of the areas. The desert being home to many insect and ground burrowing type creatures. Most of the creatures that lived in the desert were nocturnal in nature, so avoid the heat of the day. One of the few that moved around during the day was similar to a camel spider. The insect was harmless to kin’toni and zu’aan alike, though it’s strong pincers often caused sharp pain if bitten. Its main hunting was for smaller insect like creatures that stayed beneath bushes out of the sun. Due to this, they’re known to ‘chase’ people, attempting to stay in their shadow hunting for food.

In the forest, the most commonly seen creature was a deer like specimen called the ethu. It has large antlers that it uses as its main defense as well as for mating. They’re aggressive if their space is invaded, due to bad eyesight, and will often attack anyone who makes too sudden of movement around them. Their young are better sighted though, and extremely curious so its not uncommon to see youth wondering around the Loremdra settlements. In the plains, a prairie dog like creature was kept as pets. Each city usually had their own ‘colony’ they’d take care of. The creatures have extremely good visual memory, and often would ‘imprint’ on the first kin’toni that would take care of them.

If threatened they would retreat to their home, or if their home was compromised they would retreat to the safety of the Loremdra’s homes. When that would happen, they would not be picky about which kin’toni that ran to; though if they weren’t in danger they would only allow themselves to be taken to the kin’toni’s home they favor. In the hills, the most common creature was a snake like reptile called the daraka. It would live in burrows between rocks where sunlight would reach them during the day. They have extremely strong scales, being able to survive and not be crushed if a rock over 5x their weight fell on them. The scales were also extremely sharp, so they could chisel away at the soft rock of the area should they ever end up trapped for any reason.

Due to the lack of zu’aan in the region, the larger of the creatures of each region became the Loremdra’s main food staple. A common meal was one of the few species that crossed all the biomes. It was a large polar bear like creature. It’s fur adjusted to the biome that it was traveling though, turning a sandy golden color in the desert and plains, while brown in the hills and black in the forest. It largely made its home in the mountain range though, where its fur was white. They did not particularly care about the Loremdra, often ignoring them unless they got close. They could be particularly vicious if provoked, so the Loremdra would hunt them in groups to prevent as much injury as possible.
