Geography
Ward’ent Volcanic Stones Plains has experienced a lot of change to its geography over many different ages in Taerel. For starters, the area wasn’t even a stones plains when Ward’ent was first declared an area. The original geography of Ward’ent was that it was a series of islands, grouped closely together. As it stands now, the geography of Ward’ent is a little more interesting than when it was just a small group of islands. Ward’ent now stands at a higher elevation due to the hardening of lava over time. For the same reason, the land is also relatively flat.
In some areas, due to an unknown reason, there are caves and dislodged stones. These rogue stones are found scattered about the plains. Some of these stones are used as markers for kin’toni buildings and structures. The larger stones are used to mark various stages that were built by the performing clan. The smaller ones mark out small villages and groups of homes that the kin’toni live in, and also find safety from the sun in. Caves found in Ward’ent are not common, but they do exist. These caves were likely created in a lava bubble. This is when a pocket of air exists in the flowing lava, and when the lava hardens, a dip or cave is created because of it.
Most of the time, the lava pockets are filled in after another explosion, but when they are not, caves are formed. In some of these caves, kin’toni have decided to settle. They offer protection from the sun, and a cool place to live. The climate of Ward’ent is harsh. It is dry and unbearably warm there. The sun beats down on the hot lava rock relentlessly. The color of the lava rock is black, so this adds to the already warm temperatures that exist in Ward’ent. So, kin’toni settlements are found wherever it is slightly cooler. These areas would be the aforementioned large, scattered stones and the rare caves found throughout Ward’ent.
The main, and most eye-catching, geographical feature that exists in Ward’ent is the dormant volcano that lies to the west. The volcano acts as a barrier and marker between the mainland and the ocean that borders the region. The Ward’ent volcano is huge. It climbs high up into the sky, reaching an enormous 1,500 feet tall. The opening at the top of the volcano dwarfs any hole or cave that exists in the region. The calderas at the top is half a mile wide. The Ward’ent volcano can be seen from all over in the region. Since it is flat land, and the volcano is really the only change in elevation, it is the main feature of the land.
Some travel to go and see it, wanting to bear witness to the giant volcano. As far as the Wan’rila kin’toni clan are aware, the volcano is dormant and has been for ages. Should that ever change, however, the clan would be in imminent and extreme danger.
Plants
The plant life in Ward’ent is minimal. Since the volcano spent so long erupting and ravaging the land, not much flora and fauna remains. In fact, none of the plant life from the islands still exists in the modern age. However, the volcano has been dormant for some time. So, in the absence of frequent lave rivers, many plants have made a return to the area. Due to the heat of the region, this plant has found a way to only grow in the cool, dark spaces of caves. The Ward’ent berry bush is found throughout all the caves of Ward’ent. This bush is a couple feet tall, the height varying between each bush.
It is a luminescent white; all the leaves and branches are glowing white in the darkness of the caves. The moisture that is found in the caves is what helps the fruit bloom and grow. The berry that grows from the bush is a sweet one. It is a sparkling blue and is said to be some of the sweetest fruit in Taerel. That, however, is just speculation. Another frequent thing said about the berry is that it grows blue due to missing the ocean. It is theorized that at some point the berry bush grew right next to the ocean, and got its color from the salt water. But that, again, is just simple speculation.
Some trees do grow throughout Ward’ent but they are not the strongest of trees. These trees all have bark that has been bleached to be a blinding white. These trees have no leaves adorning the very few amounts of branches. These trees are also contributors to the extreme heat that can be felt in Ward’ent. Since the trees are so dry, they catch fire under the hot sun quickly. The fire burns with unyielding ferocity. The fires that catch are known to rarely go out. The sun and wind keep them burning brightly throughout many days and nights.
Ward’ent, due to the fires, is quite well lit at night, making travel through the area brutal, but ultimately safe. Other plants can be found in Ward’ent, but they are almost exclusively weeds and add little to the minuscule ecosystem that exists in Taerel. Ward’ent is a brutal place. The sun and black stone keep the area at a scorching temperature. To find other plants that could sustain zu’aan life, one would have to exit Ward’ent and go into some of the surrounding regions to find anything of substance and value. Plants that do find life and a home in Ward’ent, like the Ward’ent berry bushes, are considered rare and valuable plants.
They are not to be consumed by anyone save the creatures meant to eat and survive off of it. For that reason, any traveler seen consuming a berry meets a quick and brutal end. The plant life of Ward’ent needs to be conserved if it is to ever grow and possibly flourish into the flora and fauna it once was.
Animals
Whatever animals had lived in Ward’ent while it was a group of islands no longer exist. The cause for extinction can be solely credited to the overactive volcano that reigned supreme during this time. Now that it is a stone plains, though, animals have returned to the region. One of these animals is the wan’ope snake. Wan’ope snakes are medium-sized, only reaching about 3 feet in length at the largest. The scales on their bodies form a dark brown and red pattern that looks like an hourglass. Wan’ope snakes are dangerous, as they are quick to bite and attack anything that gets too close to it.
Their fangs do contain venom, however, the venom is not deadly, and the only effect one will experience will be extreme nausea and vomiting. Besides that, one would be able to easily survive a bite from a wan’ope snake. These snakes live off a strict diet of the chri’potia that live in the caves of the area. They are lazy hunters, and will only go after the weak and sick chri’potia. Wan’ope live in the cracks of the stone that makes up the area. The chri’potia animal that lives in Ward’ent is a nocturnal animal that flies. They are smaller creatures but have abnormally long wings that keep them in flight for longer.
They are also more agile because of it. Chri’potia are known to have very bad eyesight, so the way they find food is through echolocation. They eat a steady diet of the berries that are found throughout the area. Since the berries grow almost exclusively in the caves, and their eyesight is so poor the chri’potia rely on echolocation to keep them fed and sustained. Most chri’potia live solitary lives, but some will decide to live in colonies with one another. The interesting thing about these animals is that they have trying personalities and choose whether or not they want to be solitary or social creatures.
Finding chri’potia is a little difficult, as they only live in caves. They do fly out of them, but only at night when Ward’ent is a little cooler. Another creature that can be found in Ward’ent is the raphulla bird. Raphulla birds are flightless creatures that can handle the extreme heat of Ward’ent. These birds are on the large size, with the average adult out-weighing a zu’aan child. In terms of height, the raphulla bird comes up to the height of that same zu’aan child. Raphulla have brightly colored feathers that come in all colors of the rainbow. They have larger feathers on both their heads and on their tails.
Their feet are hard as rocks on the bottom, making them the optimal creature for traversing the Ward’ent stone in the middle of the day. The raphulla mostly travel in packs and have no natural predators, save the local kin’toni clan. It is said that to see a raphulla wandering about outside is to know that the volcano will not erupt that day.
