Ustsulunt Kin'toni Clan
History
Since their beginning, the Ustsulunt kin’toni clan were a clan of savages. They had never evolved, not since they had formed as a clan. Because of this, the clan had never truly made any technological advances as a clan, and this had set them back. Although it didn’t seem to bother any of them much. They were seemingly simple kin’toni, not engaging in any sort of advancements forward as a clan. They seemed to be content with where they were at, not seeing a reason to change something that was already working so well for them. They had essentially viewed life day to day as it was given to them, instead of trying to look into the future to see how they could change their lives.
Because of their choice to live savagely, the Ustsulunt kin’toni clan did not sleep in houses, or even in traditional beds, as other clans did. They decided that because they weren’t in need of houses to survive, that they would scatter and sleep along the bed of the forest within Risold Dark Grove. While others did sleep within the branches of the trees, it was more common for them to sleep on the forest floor. Once the shattering happened, the Ustsulunt clan were confused. They had not known of many other zu’aan around them, but then to find that they had been changed into blood drinking kin’toni, was something entirely new to them.
It took them many months to understand that they were no longer able to eat the food that they had cultivated for themselves, or the animals that they used to hunt, but that they instead had to hunt down other zu’aan to drink their blood to survive. Essentially, the Ustsulunt clan did not understand that they were kin’toni now, instead thinking that they were just really sick zu’aan. As time passed for them, the members of the clan developed keen balance skills, as they would run through the thick branches of the trees with ease.
Before long, they had begun to grow little nubs for tails, these bony skin covered masses acting as a balancing weight for them of sorts, and allowing them to move more nimbly through the trees. These tails that they had grown, were only about a foot long, but they were able to assist the Ustsulunt kin’toni with many of the tasks that they would have to complete. While they were fighting, the tails would serve as a counterweight for them to be able to put more weight into their attacks. While they didn’t fight often, this ability ensured that they were able to hold their own when they needed to.
Aside from their tails, the Ustsulunt kin’toni clan had not changed much. They were still largely the same as they had been before the infection had made them into kin’toni, and they would likely be the same in the years to come. They had decided not to evolve, and that was something that they were proud of, not succumbing to the ways of the world, and instead remaining true to themselves.
Psychology
As previously stated, the Ustsulunt clan were not the smartest of the kin’toni clans. Instead, they were quite the opposite, being easily confused by simple things. When they didn’t understand things, they as well would not question them. Instead, they chose to let whatever was happening, proceed as it would. Unless it was something that posed a threat to their village, in which case they would do everything that they could to stop it. Since the Ustsulunt kin’toni clan resided within Risold Dark Grove, they were able to take advantage of the resources that they had there.
They were able to play amongst the trees as they had grown up, as well as learn how to swing along by the branches to get where they were going above the heads of the others. As well, they would learn how to take fallen branches and turn the smaller ones into makeshift weapons to fight with. Most of this happened when they were children, allowing them to learn as they needed to, whilst also having fun amongst themselves. After the infection had happened, and the clan had grown their tails, they were excited to learn of the new things that they could accomplish while learning to balance.
Since their tails weren’t long enough for them to hold onto things with them, they instead learned how to maneuver their tails so that they would be able to balance better than each other. It had become a competition of sorts, to see who could balance the best while having things thrown at them by other members of their clan, and they would then take turns throwing things at the other members. This was how they were able to learn how to balance so well so quickly. As well, the Ustsulunt clan had never backed down from a challenge, meaning that as soon as they had their tails, they were determined to understand how to use them and how to teach others their abilities.
It was not long before each and every member of the clan was able to use their tails for balancing, and they were quite proud of this. Aside from understanding how to use a new part of their body, the clan members had not changed their mentality. They still believed that they had to work hard for what they had, and that technology was essentially useless. They knew that they didn’t want to give in and use any sort of new technology, even though they did not know much of what the new technology would be.
Because of the clan having lived such sheltered lives, they hadn’t met too many other kin’toni clans, and so they didn’t know what the new world looked like, only that it existed, and that they didn’t want much part of it. They didn’t trust that the new world was safe, and so instead they decided that they would live as they had been, knowing that they were safe in what they were doing, without changing anything.
Biology
Because the Ustsulunt kin’toni clan relied on their bodies to do every task that they needed done, their bodies were muscled. It was well known by the clan that their bodies could do the jobs that needed to be done, and that there was no better tool to do so. As the years had passed, the members of the clan only gained more muscles, their bodies reflecting their hard work and making it easier to see. While it was well known that it was usually the men doing the harder tasks, there were also a few women that would tackle the harder tasks with the men, showing them that even women could lift and carry heavier things.
Occasionally, the strongest members of the clan would compete by seeing who could complete the tasks that needed some quicker. Each would be given a list of hard tasks, and whichever kin’toni finished their list quicker, was announced the winner, and thus the strongest member of the clan. These games were always played in good spirit as the clan members didn’t much care to hold the title, and thus there was no cheating. The features that the Ustsulunt clan had were ordinary at best. Their eyes were a dark olive green with a lighter green around their irises, allowing for a gradient effect to be seen.
This effect was harder to see from afar, and much easier to see once you were closer. Their faces were round, with their features equally spaced in the center, allowing for their faces to look ordinary, as opposed to each of them looking completely unique. After the infection happened and they were turned into kin’toni, the Ustsulunt clan grew short tails. These were short, flesh covered bones that protruded from the bottom on their spine, and stuck out at least a foot from behind them. The tails allowed for the kin’toni to balance better, as well as allowing them to move faster when they were moving through the branches of trees.
Each of the kin’toni had chosen to make their clothing accessible for the tails, so that they would have full range of motion when they were needed. Aside from giving them the ability to balance better, initially, the tails had gotten in the way for the Ustsulunt clan. There were many instances where the members of the clan had to relearn how to sit, or how to lay down to sleep, so that they weren’t uncomfortable from their tails. There were some kin’toni that had tried to tie their tails up, or had tried to take them off because they hadn’t understood what they could do with their tails, and this had left them permanently disfigured.
There was nothing that could be done to fix their tails, and so some of the kin’toni within the clan had lost the ability to balance better, while they watched the rest of their clan members being able to do things that they couldn’t.
Culture
Culturally, the Ustsulunt kin’toni clan didn’t have much of anything that set them apart from other clans. They held the belief that technology was going to poison the world, and that hard work always paid off, but other than that, they just decided to live their lives. As they had heard of other clans evolving and growing their villages and inventing things that they could use and help other kin’toni with, the Ustsulunt clan wanted nothing to do with any of it. They didn’t think that they needed to invent anything that could make their lives easier, when they had been giving nice strong bodies that could do all of the work for them.
They didn’t mind that it took them longer to complete things, as it allowed them to learn and understand what it was that they needed to do. They believed that hard work was how you would learn the skills that you needed. The Ustsulunt clan believed that children, when there had been children around, were meant to be carefree and that they should have fun. When there were children within the clan, after the infection happened, and they had grown their tails, they were allowed to roam free as they pleased. Once the kids had figured out how to use their tails, and they had gotten older, they had taken to the trees to play.
They would figure out how to climb, and how to maneuver around so that they could play while the adult kin’toni were working. Once they got to a certain age, they were asked which jobs they wanted to help with, and eventually they went to help the adults full time, as they had become adults themselves. The Ustsulunt kin’toni clan did not believe that school was necessary when they were living their lives and able to learn whatever they needed to know as soon as they needed it. They believed that education was mindless, and that anything that they needed to learn was easy enough to learn on the job.
They were able to teach each other what they needed to know as soon as they knew it, and they found that this was the quickest way to learn new things. Aside from this, there was no need for any sort of formal education, as that would take up valuable time, and there were more important things that needed to get done. There were some times that the Ustsulunt clan were hit with a culture shock. When they would go out to go hunting in their packs, they would encounter zu’aan villages that looked like they weren't real. At least this is what the Ustsulunt clan would think when they would see them.
They would see zu’aan in updated clothing, and using tools to accomplish tasks faster, and this only aggravated the Ustsulunt clan more. They didn't think that the tools that the zu’aan clans were using were needed, and it would drive them to want to hunt them more.
Government
The Ustsulunt clan didn't have much of a traditional government. While they did have appointed leaders, this usually being the oldest and/or strongest kin’toni from their clan, these leaders did not lead the clan in a traditional way. They wouldn't hold many meetings, and they did not consult with other kin’toni clans as they didn't want to taint their clan with the ways of others. While there were laws in place, there weren't many that would lead to any sort of incarceration if they were broken. Instead, the clan had rules and laws that were meant to keep the members of their clan safe.
These consisted of the members of the clan not being allowed to go hunting in groups smaller than 6 members to ensure that if something were to happen that they would have enough kin’toni to be able to keep each other safe. As well, children were not allowed to leave the grounds of Risold Dark Grove without at least one adult per two children as they wanted to make sure the children were safe and taken care of. Aside from the laws that were meant to keep the members of the clan safe, there were a few that would cause the leaders to have to step in if they were broken.
These consisted of if a kin’toni from their clan knowingly endangered them, and they had proof. Or if one of the members from their clan had decided to plot against them, and thus was planning the downfall of the clan. Each of these offenses would cause the leaders of the clan to step in, and they would meet together to decide what the punishment would be for the kin’toni that had broken their laws. As well, they would meet with the offender so that they could interrogate them and see what their views were, and how guilty they seemed to act.
All of these factors would determine if they were going to lock the offender away, if they were going to banish them, or if they were going to have the offender put to death. If locking the offender away was the punishment that was chosen, they would be taken to a grove of trees that was particularly close together and they would be put inside while also being guarded by a strong kin’toni so that they didn't have a chance to escape. They would be left there long enough that they would be able to reflect on their choices, and once the leaders agreed that it was long enough, they would be allowed out, and told that if they were to offend again, they would either be banished or put to death.
If banishent was chosen, the offending kin’toni would be walked far away from the clan grounds and told that if they were to return, they would be killed.
And finally, if it was chosen that a kin’toni was to be put to death, the leaders of the clan would walk them away from the clan and would snap the offender's neck, leaving their body for the animals before returning.
Military
While there wasn't a definitive military force within the Ustsulunt clan, there were more than enough strong men and women within the clan that would be able to keep the rest of the members safe. The leaders of the clan would also go and fight with the rest of the able members of the clan, knowing that it was their job to keep their clan safe. Since there wasn't usually a reason to go to fight, the members of the clan would spend their days going about business as usual. They wouldn't pay any mind to any sort of battling that was going on around their clan, and they would only choose to go and fight if there was a threat posed to the safety of their clan.
Otherwise, they would spend their days not fighting, choosing instead to do their chores and avoid any type of confrontation. When there was the need to protect their clan by going into battle, the Ustsulunt clan would spend a short time training and preparing themselves. This would entail them sparring with each other so they could ensure that they could use their weapons, and that they were comfortable in their armour, before they would set out to where the battles were taking place, and they would partake. While they were a strong clan, they weren't the best when it came to having to fight others.
Their strengths did not lay within knowing how to fight, instead, they knew how to tend to crops, and how to build the things that they needed. So when it came to fighting, they were more likely to be wiped out than they were to win. Since they only used their weapons when they needed to fight, the Ustsulunt clan were rusty with their weapons. They had an array of wooden spears with sharpened rocks for tips, as well as bows with rock tipped arrows. These were the weapons that they chose to weild, and that they used to hunt before they were changed into kin’toni.
Now, those weapons would lay scattered against trees in the grove, waiting to get used when they were needed. When there were children in the clan, they would often take the weapons and play with them, being unaware of what they were used for, as they had never been taught about them. This caused the adults to panic, thinking that their children might injure themselves or each other, and so they would spring into action and take the weapons away, telling the kids that they shouldn't be playing with those, but they would refuse to teach them about the weapons and what they were used for.
Instead, they would explain that they were unsafe to be playing with, and then they would take them away and hide them. This would leave the kids confused as eventually they would grow up and need to use the weapons, but not know how to.
Religion
The Ustsulunt kin’toni clan was a clan that on the outside, looked very simple. If you watched for long enough you would be able to tell the routines of each of the kin’toni, and that was something that they would never change. They held their routines to high standards, and it would ensure that they knew what they were doing, when they needed to be doing it, as well as what they should be doing next. Because of how they were with their routines, the members of the clan didn't have any time for religion. They didn't have the time to pray as they would work from as soon as they woke up, to right when they would go to bed.
There used to be a couple of members that believed there might have been a higher power, but they didn't have any time to look into it or worry about it as they always had something to do that would keep them busy. It had been said that there were members of the Ustsulunt clan that had believed in a higher power long before the infection, and long before the births of the members that now made up the clan. There were stories that they were able to tell, where their ancestors told the stories of how they were created, and how they would worship the god that made them.
They would pass these stories on to their children in hopes that they would in turn continue to pass them on. However, there must have been something lost along the way, because nowadays, many of the kin’toni within the clan believed that these were just stories, and that there wasn't anything that could back them up, and so they didn't believe in them. There was a time when a group of members from the clan had decided that they were going to get everyone to believe in a specific religion once again. They had come up with days that they would all meet together and would talk about their religion and decide what they wanted to believe in.
As well, they tried to remind the other members of the clan to pray to this god that they hadn't even named, and it worked for a while. After a couple of months, the amount of kin’toni that went to their meetings began to dwindle, as many of them decided that they would rather tend to their chores. Many had decided that sitting around and talking about a god that might not even exist wasn't worth a full day of missing out on doing their chores, and so they would leave the meeting to the other members that wanted to believe in it.
Eventually, no one went to the meetings anymore, and even the group of kin’toni that had started their meetings had decided that they would rather go about their days and finish their chores instead of trying to convince other kin’toni to believe in a god that even they stopped believing in.
