Geography
As evident from the name, the costal bog is a marshy region on the eastern margin of the Canlai landmass, it is directly across from the Bliss beaches port of the Ashat Kingdom and is only a few short hundred miles away from the coral islands that the Tharis pirate kin'toni call home. Like the neighbouring regions of Zelan and Nara, the costal bog has a gentle temperature with four different seasons that change with regularity not often observed in regions such as the bogs from other parts of the world.
The marshy state of the coastal bog is not due to any excessive rainfall but rather the unique nature of the land that forms the region of the landmass paired with the number of rivers that cut across it as they begin the formation of their deltas and prepare to meet the ocean. The rivers of the total bog are as much originating from Zelan as they are from Nara, at least in terms of the land holdings counted for the nations traditionally, however if one were to consider only the immediate holdings, then Zelan is much better connected with the costal bogs by river than Nara.
Some commentators point this out when the reason for the alliance with the Tharis nation is brought forward for discussion, for although the Tharis nation has remained neutral and not engaged in any large battles or wars with any kin'toni nations, they haven’t been overly helpful in the conduction of the war either. They have been considered to be instrumental in disrupting the supply chains of the zu'aan nation states that supply one another by form of the ocean, this tactic has not yielded any significant result that would put the Tharis nation in favour with the rest of kin'toni nations.
Given their reputation within the kin'toni world, it is agreed that the Nara kingdom would not have dealt with the kin'toni pirates for the control of invasion in the bogs, and would have mostly been happy to deal with the region on its own. Since Zelan’s newly acquired territory is so well connected by water to the costal bogs, it is believed that the Zelan kin'toni officials arm twisted the Nara kin'toni authorities to fall in line with the alliance for handing over the region to the the Tharis.
As part of the alliance that was reached among the three nations, Tharis is required to settle in the bogs, patrol the surrounding waters and the navigable regions of the rivers as well, and in return Zelan and Nara nations would prevent the Tharis nation from being isolated and attacked by the Ashat nation and the Itkali kingdom. Although the wording of the alliance is a lot subtler and does not quite hit the nail so soundly as the summary provided here, the message is pretty clear.
Tharis is no longer a nation that can be engaged without incurring the wrath of Zelan and Nara, which are two of the most important nations found on the landmass of Canlai.
Plants
Like the Bliss beaches found in the Ashat nation, the Costal bogs of Tharis nation are packed with the presence of the Mangrove tree forests, in fact the mangrove forests found in the coral bog are much more sense and thick than those of the bliss beaches but they aren’t as tall. The mangrove forests have been uninterrupted for centuries and have reached a climax ecosystem which allows them to stable and large population of animals. The mangrove forests of the bliss beaches have only recently been revived by the action of the kin'toni for the zu'aan had nearly destroyed the population of the mangrove trees.
This was during the time of the Xerea Empire. The costal bogs though have never been completely inhabited with by even the zu'aan during the time of the Xerea Empire, this is because of the forests at that time were considered to a be safe sanctuary for the Jaiua-ytrel, which was an important creature that was associated with one of the noble families that administered the Xerea Empire in accordance of the will and guidance of the emperor. The Jaiua-ytrel although have the unique ability of being able to not only adapt but also to thrive in any environment.
The animals do seem to particularly enjoy the marshy lands of the costal bog, and it is theorised that is because of the safety offered by an extensive and shallow network of waterways that allow the animals to raise their offsprings within the safety of the shadow of the mangrove forests, The mangrove forests have recently found a unique use, the roots that are grown by most of the mangrove trees in the region are now being used by the Tharis kin'toni pirates to prepare cords that are not only much lighter than the ropes they had in the past used to manage their unique boats.
The roots of the mangrove forest are first cut into ribbons by the Tharis sailors and then set to dry in the harsh son found in the oceans, once the roots have dried to the amount wherein they are stringy and thin but not moist and prone to tearing, the fragments are then woven into cords like the ropes made of hemp. The root ropes are not only much more easily manufactured than the hemp ropes that the pirate kin'toni used in the past, in addition being the roots of the mangrove trees they are much more resistant to the effect of the water, in fact, once the roots are dried they seem to be able to become warm.
On the other hand ropes that were made of hemp were difficult first of all due the non availability land that could support enough land to keep it profitable, and paired with the fact that ropes had a very short life as they were very prone to water damage, in case the ropes are not properly oiled and stored after a day’s use, the ropes becomes frayed and can affect the stability and strength of the animals that pull the Tharis vessels.
Animals
The most popular animal of the region is the Jaiua-ytrel, which as stated earlier was a symbol for an extremely important noble house among the zu'aan at time of the Xerea Empire, in fact among the first structures that was found in the bog were the large engraved walls that told a story of how a group of zu'aan was saved by the Jaiua-ytrel of the region when they were being chased by armed robbers. The animals that saved the group of people became a symbol for those individuals and among those were the seeds of the family that grew to control the absolute authority of the Xerea Empire.
In order to pay tribute to the creatures that had favoured their ancestors, the nobles awarded this whole region of the bogs to the royal animal minder and instructed the department to oversee the population of the local Jaiua-ytrel and try to make their life in the region for them more comfortable. The animal minder was after all a zu'aan, and was as such not in touch with the needs of nature, the actions of the staff members of the Xerea Empire were just as much to the benefit of the Jaiua-ytrel as they were to their detriment.
The Jaiua-ytrel are a fearsome species of animals, and are among the oldest unchanged species of the world, suggesting that the animals were done adapting to it even before the world was done settling into a particular weather and climate pattern. The animal is not only appreciated for its wide ability to adapt a very large range of temperature conditions but also for how long it has survived by hunting with a body that is remarkably unsuited to running and biting, the animal spends nearly a third of its life in the water and doesn’t come out onto the land or any purpose other than breeding.
The animal although spends such a large part of its life does not have gills and needs to come to the surface in order to breathe. The animal though considered scared by the zu'aan is now seen as a source of excellent leather that does not become easily damaged even with the action of the highly reactive brine water than reduces even the best of clothes threadbare. The kin'toni pirates have no feeling of religion towards the creature and therefore have taken to crafting clothes made from the leather that is extracted from the animal.
The leather is by no means comfortable and is positively harsh in comparison to the soft clothes made by the Zelan traders by using the unique plant that is native to their land, but the hard and durable leather allows the pirate kin'toni an extra layer of protection from salt spray in the ocean and also gives them an opportunity to avoid some damage for at certain angles the leather can turn away knife jabs and slashes and so fits their line of work just as much as the weather within which they work.
