Geography

The Thrayld meadow is located in the centre of the Canlai continent, so this region too does not experience the moderating effect that large water bodies exert on lands that are located close to them, the climate of the region is unique, although it does not rain here quite often, the soil continues to retain moisture throughout the year from only a short amount of rain. This is ascribed to the unique soil of the meadows, although it appears just as the soil of the steppes that are found in the Ashat Kingdom, the difference ends with the appearance.

As scratching the surface of the land would reveal the bottom layer of the top soil to be a dense black. This black soil is the result of erosion of basalt, which is indicative of the fact that the area had once had a very active volcano that spewed out great amounts of lava onto the land which eventually cooled down to form basalt and then this rock broke down to form the black soil.The area has never had any earthquakes of particular note, even during the shattering when many volcanoes across the world became suddenly active and earthquakes rocked the kin'toni people.


The Thrayld meadows remained quite unaffected which further deepened the interest of the kin'toni to the origins of the rock material that created the black soil. The black soil of the region is highly suited to the economic activity that takes place in the meadows for it has the ideal conditions for the growth of the crop that fuels the whole economy of the capital. In particular the conditions that make the meadows a great place for the growth of julgan is not only the limited amount of rainfall that occurs but also the fact that it occurs during a small window of time.

This means the fibres of julgan are not exposed to a lot of moisture during their growth stage and this in turn leads to a crop that is much easier to work and craft with and it allows for the creation of textiles that are a lot better in quality than would be produced if the fibre had faced rain during its growth. Lastly beyond the nature and scope of precipitation, the presence of the black soil allows for the growth of julgan on a great scale that makes it all the more profitable, the underlay of the soil traps moisture after rain and despite facing several dry months.


The soil does not lose this water and it continues to nurture the crop throughout the dry season as well. Upon being wetted the soil of the region gains a gum like texture that forms a matrix through which water is not able to escape despite the application of a great amount of heat and sunlight. Another feature of the soil in the region that allows for more efficient and cost effective farming of julgan is what the kin'toni call self ploughing, in this way the soil forms great cracks in the dry season when exposed to direct heat.

These cracks allow the planting of seeds much easier and without the application of a lot of farmers, it is well known that if not for the soil of the meadows, Zelan would not be the same nation, for it has a deep impact on the commerce of the nation.


Plants

The julgan plant grown in the region is the primary crop that the Zelan kin'toni grow in not only large quantities year round but also the crop that has allowed the nation to gain a place of importance in the world of kin'toni and wars with zu'aan. For the julgan crop allows for the crafting of the finest clothes in all the lands, no other material has been so well liked by the kin'toni of Taerel than the julgan clothes crafter by the kin'toni of Zelan. Although several attempts have been made to try and grow the crops in other regions.

And some have been successful as well, but the quality of the julgan produced in other regions has been dismal and presented no real competition to the market share of the julgan produced in Zelan. The crop was discovered to be growing in the region at the time of the Xerea Empire as well however it is evident that the zu'aan did not rely on the crops for any commercial use, the zu'aan records indicate that although julgan had been an important part in the times prior to the Xerea Empire, but after the invention of fibres made in the laboratory.


The cultivation of crop was abandoned. The kin'toni that settled in the region had been relying on the use of the discarded zu'aan clothing and the leather hides they were able to craft on their own, but both of these materials were uncomfortable to wear and fight in, it turns out that the kin'toni sense of touch is far more nuanced than that of the zu'aan, and wearing hides and lab made clothing was like smelling a rotting fish all the time. Then came the clothes manufactured of julgan, the Vlaia Kin'toni Clan that experimented with the material discovered the versatility of the material produced and learned and perfected the techniques of weaving julgan fibres into threads to create clothes.

The soft and pleasant clothes were an instant popularity that made the Vlaia clan rich beyond all expectations, and once they had gained control of the region and established the kingdom of Zelan, the kin'toni opened up the monopoly of julgan cultivation and textile manufacturing to all those who wished to learn, and this is the time which saw the most significant progress most quickly, for kin'toni were soon able to convert the julgan clothes to levels beyond simple utility and into the realm of fashion and even warfare.


It is said that the Vlaia kin'toni are working on a type of textile that will prevent the penetration of sunlight altogether, such clothes would significantly alter how mobile army units operate.

Animals

The meadows have mostly been completely cleared of wild animals and wild plants as well as trees in order to devote the maximum amount of area for the growth of the crop that brings the nation the most gold and currency, julgan. However, there is one particular creature that has resisted all attempts to be exterminated from the meadows, and this animal is the worm that is commonly referred to as the tayla-ade, although it is a threat for only a short period of its life, the pest or rather creature is able deal a truly devastating amount of damage to the julgan crop that is cultivated in the meadows for the manufacture of kin'toni clothes.

The tayla-ade is a pest that has two distinct stages in its life, and these include that of a worm and that of a moth. When in the form of a worm, the tayla-ade spends all of its time feeding on the flowers of the julgan plant, and the rest of the time it sleeps, spending the night hours burrowed deep into the ground where it burrows its home. Therein lies the challenge with dealing with the pest, the kin'toni are able to access their fields only during the night, at a time when the tayla-ade has already hidden itself, and since it tends to live deep underground,


It isn’t possible to dig it out without damaging the crop. So the kin'toni first decided that they would ensure the whole field was dug up before planting and all the worms found living would be killed, others even tried to set their crops on fire after the julgan had been plucked in an attempt to try and kill the worms living in the soil, but although some damage was found to be avoidable in this way, the vast majority of the population remained unaffected. And when all the kin'toni farmers were trying to discover a tactic to deal with the tayla-ade or the moth that it eventually turns into.

A family of kin'toni began to use toris-aks to guard their fields. These are large birds that are incapable of flight, but have the ability to jump and hop up great distances, these toris-aks have been proven to be very intelligent and they seem to thoroughly enjoy consuming the tayla-ades. Additionally, the toris-aks have never showed any real interest towards the julgan crop itself and so it was found that they could be released into the julgan fields during the day and the toris-aks would pick the plants clean of the tayla-ades.


In this way the kin'toni farmers have come to deal with the menace of the worm and the moth that it eventually turns into. Although the toris-aks are very efficient at hunting and killing the worms they are not a hundred percent effective, for although the number of infestations have severely gone down since they were begun to be adopted by all farmers, there are still cases of destroyed crops due to the intervention of the tayla-ade and many farmers continue to burn their fields and dig them up prior to planting season.
