Geography

The Swedeeow region was a large dryland that was filled with sand and rocky ground. It was known for its sparse habitation which included a large amount of dry, resilient shrubs and other non-water intensive crops that could grow in the dry conditions. the region had broken terrain filled with many sharp rocks, sheer cliffs, canyons and gorges that made it very difficult to travel along the hinterlands of the region. Many of these regions were also covered in sand dunes that could shift from day to day depending of the speed and direction of the winds.

The region was drained by a single, large river that was called the Swedeeow river. It was almost half a mile long in its widest parts and brought a large amount of fresh water into the region. The zu'aan would slowly move to the banks of this river in order to escape the inhospitable conditions of the hinterlands. The spots along the river banks were the only vegetated spots in the entire terrain. Groups like the Swedeeow empire would begin the agricultural revolution in the region by planting their crops along the banks.

This helped to make the region more hospitable and led to an increase in the population and wealth of the region. Many agricultural settlements would rise up along the length of the river. The tribes would come into contact with each other by travelling along the river. It became the main transportation route and facilitated communication throughout the entire region. The mixture of water and clay along the banks would also lead to the invention of clay bricks which were used for many of the region's construction activities. This was necessary because of the absence of large trees with suitable wood for construction.

The buildings of the region were built in their sharp rectangular designs which became a signature style of the region. The region had a Mediterranean type of climate which was dry for most of the year. Precipitation was very rare and only occurred in short bursts for small periods. The region had winds blowing throughout the region for most of the year which led to the transportation of sand dunes in the hinterlands as well as the desertification of the vegetated areas.

The region experienced two distinct seasons in a year- summer and winter. Summers were relatively dry and hot, with temperatures that could reach the mid-thirties at their highest. The surface could become very hot especially in the unshaded drylands of the interior. The situation was more tolerable along the river which had a cooling influence on the surroundings. The little precipitation that fell in the region occurred during this period. In winter, the temperatures could fall to single digits with cold winds blowing across the entire region.

These minimum temperatures were reached during the night when the region would quickly lose the heat that it had built up over the course of the day. During the day, the temperatures were more favorable and warmer due to the influence of the direct sunlight and the lack of any clouds to block it.

Plants

The Swedeeow drylands had two specific type of terrains that had entirely separate types of vegetation. The dry badlands in the interior of the region were home to many species of dry shrubs and plants but lacked any tall trees or water-intensive vegetation. These plants had to be able to survive in extremely dry conditions where precipitation happened only for a few months of the year. They all had a characteristic bony appearance with dry, flaky leaves or cactus like needles.

They had various adaptations to store water within their bodies including fleshy stems and leaves. The regions along the Swedeeow river had more access to water and had a greater variety in its vegetation. The region had a distinct lack of trees- which forced the zu'aan to rely on other material like clay bricks for their construction needs. This part of the region had a lot of plants and crops that were grown by the zu'aan to fulfil their dietary requirements. The success of their cultivation activities came from a variety of factors including the availability of fertile soil.

Sunlight and the construction of irrigation channels to fully supply the region with water. Some of the most common plants of the region included the ordra shrub that grew in the drylands of the region, the water storing turray plant, the urnero crop of the Hrethist zu'aan- that was used to weave many kinds of luxurious clothing and the vesim crops that grew on the river banks of the region. The ordra shrub covered most of the drylands of the Swedeeow region. It had a many dry branches that extended out of the ground, bearing many small and dry leaves.

These leaves were consumed by many wild creatures of the region for its hallucinogenic properties. It had a high demand in many of the zu'aan markets outside of the region. The plant had thick and fleshy stems below the surface that was used to store water that the region received during a few months of the year. It was great for survival situations when as the roots could store a small amount of water, hardly enough to quench the thirst of a full-grown zu'aan adult, but enough for an emergency.

The turray plant was another dryland plant that resembled a gourd. It had most of its body growing underground while only a small portion of its stalk was visible above. It was considered as a delicacy as well as the most convenient source of water in the region. It could store enough water to save a person from dehydration. Most explorers would mark out the locations of turray fields in their maps so that they could head directly to them when they ran out of water and supplies. The main body had a cylindrical shape with a crunchy outer layer and soft seeds within.

It was a light green in color and was one of the few green plants that could be found in the drylands. The urnero crop was the most vital crop of the Hrethist zu'aan clan. They mainly grew this crop for its flowers which could be processed into fabric and turned into cloth. They traded them to many zu'aan settlements along the Swedeeow river, where they fetched exorbitant prices. Their cloth was famed for its comfort and durability which allowed it to last longer than the usual zu'aan fabrics.

It was quite water intensive and had to be grown close to the river banks, it also had limited nutritional properties and could not be used as a food source. The vesim was a common crop of the zu'aan settlers in the region. It was well suited to the region and had a relatively high yield which was vital for the self-sufficiency of the inhabitants.

Animals

The Swedeeow dryland was home to all kinds of wildlife, this variety ranged from the dryland dwelling lizards and burrowing snakes that could survive in the drought-like conditions to the scavenging birds that roamed the skies- looking for an opportunity to snatch up unsuspecting prey, and the aquatic animals and fishes that inhabited the Swedeeow river along with the domesticated cattle that were found on its banks. These animals could be divided on the basis of their habitats and their water requirements, the animals that were found closer to the rivers generally required more water and were more vulnerable to the effects of heat and thirst.

The dryland animals in contrast had many different adaptations to save or store water and could survive long periods in the absence of any water or food source. Some of the most famous wildlife of the region included the large niyud lizard of the drylands, the nilata rattlesnake, the keyndelm cattle of the zu'aan herders and the mos'pol dolphins that made their way upriver into the region from the distant seas. The niyud was a common lizard that could be found within rocks and crevices or wandering around the terrain at night in search of prey.

It was gigantic for its species and could reach enormous lengths of up to six feet in height. It crawled rapidly on all four limbs which were equipped with sharp claws to attack its prey and to scale steep or vertical walls. The lizard was covered in a rough leathery textured skin that could prevent light grazes and cuts and protected its vital organs. This hide was a common requirement for crafting armor among the zu'aan tribesmen of this region. It was colored in a light gold or brown to blend into its surroundings and it was known for its camouflaging and hunting abilities.

The nilata was a variety of rattlesnake that was found in the drylands of the Swedeeow region. It was known for the distinctive sound produced by its scaly and upright tail which sounded similar to a rattle. It had a very poisonous bite that could kill full sized adults as well as larger animals. It came in a variety of colors that could blend into the environment. Despite its lethal nature, some zu'aan tribes were known to hunt and consume the snake as a delicacy.

The keyndelm was a goat-like animal that was found near the river's banks. It was domesticated by the zu'aan clans of the region and reared for its meat as well as its wool and hide which was used to craft their clothing along with other tools. The mos'pol was a dolphin-like aquatic creature that would regularly travel upriver along the Swedeeow river. It fed on smaller fish as well as the aquatic plants growing in the riverbeds. It was an intelligent species that was known to save drowning animals as well as zu'aan and could be trained to aid in their fishing activities.
