Geography

The Solak Overgrown Plains is a moderately large, bordering on massive, region located south of the Tinedel Granite Mountain Ridges. The region is located in one of the most traveled southern region trade routes which better allowed the Naynard to, in combination with their walls, become a major trade partner. Only about half of the region total has their brick walls built- this is not as major a problem as it seems due to the walls and outposts being strategically placed in the heaviest and easiest traveled areas. Rain in the region is common with at least one shower per month.

As in the name, the region is a series of large plains. To mitigate flooding chances, long trenches were created to direct water to the small river just outside the region or to manufactured ponds and lakes. When it showers, the ground becomes moderately muddy, enough so that gravel roads or railroad tie like structures had to be installed for travelers with wagons or carts. Beneath the outpost gate is a large storage room for the items or documentation of knowledge collected as a toll from the travelers. In their fear of potential robbery, the storeroom is not unloaded at the gate but through a built secret tunnel that opens to a hidden basement door.


Due to their quickly decaying physical state, instead of stairs, the floor is at a minor incline with a minecart like system installed to quickly move goods with little labor required. The Naynard’s homes are those that were taken from the various zu’aan tribes in the region. Each town was built with the homes being on one half of the town and shops on the direct opposite side. One commonality across the tribes (indirectly) was that they made the division point their ‘town center’ even if it was not actually the center of the town lines. The zu’aan had used the area for festivals mostly.

Similarly, the Naynard clan members used the town center as a gathering socializing area, often with large bonfires and food. Originally, none of the towns were larger than another due to the zu’aan’s split of the region, but with it being taken over, the towns directly on the trade route were expanded for travelers to stay, as well as larger warehouses for goods purchased from merchants. The other towns also saw expansion over the years, though nothing as major as on the trade route. In each town, in close vicinity to their government building right by the town center, there’s also a library, artifact museum like building.


Here the various goods collected from the gates were stored (each from the closest gates) for all the members to see. Most days the buildings were off limits to non-Naynard clan members, though once a month when they could monitor any visitors, they allowed a small number in at a time. Under the museum, there’s a catacomb like series of tunnels that also connects to their government building as well as their ‘hospital’ building. When a member was seriously injured and the ‘ok’ by the clan was given to put them down, it was done at the hospital where they were then taken to the catacombs for burial.

This was largely created due to traveler’s horror in the earliest days of their control at seeing someone killed over a wound that wasn’t (or shouldn’t have been) fatal.

Plants

The Solak Overgrown Plains are known for their large fields of native tall grasses. The region, with its consistent rain, is wet but not constantly damp. This allows for grasses to take over easily without risk of root rot or drowning. The region is also known for food production in connection to their gastronomy passion, though a number of the crops used for various dishes are imported from other regions such as the Ler’ther territory. The most common grass in the region is similar in appearance to a pampas, though the majority of the grass is a pale blue green with the ‘tail’ like end being a white almost ivory color with hints of purple at the tip.

The zu’aan of the region named them Eolaestirap. The Eolaestirap when in the earliest stages of grown only grows in bushel like groups without the ‘tail’ stems- it can take a plant anywhere from one season to five depending on the weather and the nutrients of the area to fully mature. Once mature, unless otherwise damaged to the root itself, an Eolaestirap can live for over a hundred years producing ‘tails’ twice a year. The oldest produce the largest tails and are often picked as the main kindling in the Naynard’s bonfires. Due to its longtime to mature, the Eolaestirap as a species are extremely vulnerable to any invasive plants that make it into the region.


This also meant that it was moderately difficult for other regions to grow them without their natural grasses or plants killing them off. Growing along the trenches, ponds and lakes the Naynard created is a ground cover ‘creeping’ type plant. It was named the Qilmol, after the botanist that traveled to the region with it as their ‘toll’ for entering the area. Qilmol were a pond type plant crossed with a vining plant to create long vines of circular leaves (almost like an 8 or infinity sign). The variant that was given to the Naynard was one of the more rare variety created as the leaves were a deep wine to black color with electric purple flowers that form into a deeper royal purple colored berry.

The berries are not edible, at least in the nutrition sense. They hold no nutritional properties, but they do hold a ‘heavy’ type feel when consuming- due to this, the berries are often used in dishes where there is only light flavors or light ‘weight’ so the consumer does not intake an extreme amount of the dish. In connection to the lack of nutritional properties, the Qilmol is safe for zu’aan and kin’toni consumption making it a versatile flavoring produce. Unlike Eolaestirap, Qilmol is more of an invasive species and is extremely quick growing.


A Qilmol plant can fully mature in a single week, producing berries in about a month no matter the time of year. Of the various plants in the region, their consistent harvestability all-year round makes them a highly sought after crop by the merchants traveling the region.

Animals

The plains house a number of creatures. Due to the nature of the region and the surrounding territories, horse like creatures are extremely common and one of the staples of the area. Domesticated farm animals were also common- mainly due to them being part of the regions that the Naynard would absorb into their own. Many pest and rodent like creatures live in the grasses, but rarely ever leave for fear of being exposed to predators so the Naynard clan has managed to avoid having a major pest problem. Insects are also extremely common during the warmest part of the season, but with various imported goods the issue is managed to a minor annoyance as opposed to ‘getting eaten alive’ by bugs.

Frichassasda are similar to a horse in their carrying capacity and behavior. They unlike horses though, Frichassasda are armored with hides of a similar strength to an armadillo. Like armadillos, their armor like plates are made of horn and bone; they evolved this way mainly due to genetic mutations of a similar vein to ‘tree man’ syndrome becoming extremely common in the population. The Frichassasda learned over the years that rubbing the hardened plates prevents them from growing to the point where it starts to hinder their movement.


Those that are caught by the various tribes and clans are extremely high maintenance and are often required to be kept in pairs due to their need for socialization. Frichassasda that are caught and ‘domesticated’ as well as those born into captivity are far less aggressive due to their perceived safety with their owner and thus are extremely loyal to their ‘leader’. Wild Frichassasda are much more aggressive due to their perceived constant danger, and while not easily spooked, they are extremely territorial and find any confrontation a sign of aggression.

They also travel in groups of five or more, so ranged weapons like arrows are the first resort when dealing with any Frichassasda. While not the most common one of the creatures raised on the absorbed farm-lands of the plains is the Solak harein. Like its cousin the Sam’ome harein, the Solak harein has 3 pairs of legs (6 total) with a skin pocket capable of holding either the front or middle set of legs. Unlike its cousin though, their middle pair of legs were primarily used for attacking in tandem with either the front or hind legs; their legs are much shorter as well hindering their speed.


The harein is raised mainly as a ‘delicacy’ for their meat, with only a small handful across all the farms being kept as a kind of weed control for the farming fields. Zu’aan children find them extremely adorable, but they can’t keep them as pets outside the plains or the immediate neighbors due to the Eolaestirap grasses being one of their main sources of nutrition. Because of their near monopoly on the harein, the Naynard often use them as a major bartering and trading as well as a ‘exclusive’ dishes only available in the plains.
