Geography

The geography of the Slaugh region was dominated by its flat steppe regions, surrounded by its tall mountainous regions. These two areas were had their own unique colors and looks that largely depended on the conditions present in each respective region. The steppes were flat and open terrain that stretched endlessly on all sides. It was covered by a mix of grasslands and forests- containing deciduous varieties of trees that would shed their leaves during the winter seasons.

The soil in these plains were also better suited for agriculture and supported a variety of edible crops that were grown by the zu'aan inhabitants of the region. The mountainous regions in contrasts were filled with more resilient alpine vegetation that included hardy and rougher grass varieties along with coniferous trees that could withstand the colder conditions of the windy mountains. The Slaugm's inhabitants could be found in both types of areas and relied heavily on the plants and vegetation for their resources as well as their food.


They were known to build their first settlement solely out of wood and were practiced wood cutters and carpenters. Their skill was reflected on their work which was a mixture of precision and accuracy. This early reliance would slowly wear off with the passing time and the zu'aan would soon discover the vast mineral reserved located under the mountains of the region. The zu'aan began to make large changes to the appearance of the landscape when they started their mining activities.

Large tunnels were dug into the surface of the earth to exploit these vast resources leading to the buildup of excavated soil and debris on the surface of the region. This led to the formation of many new mining settlements some of which would go on to become independent clans or cities. One of the most famous example was the Traherneym clan- who were formed from a mining society of the Xalen family. They would build their own immortal stone city under the surface of the earth using stone and rocks that they had accumulated over the years.


The steppes of the region were filled with many swift animals that could travel for thousands of miles in a single day. This was necessary to travel across the vast distances of the Slaughm's steppes. The alpine had more conventional animals with fur and fat covered animals that were built to resist the chill and strong winds of the region. The Slaugm was known for its temperate climate that was relatively dry for most of the year. It experienced three distinct kinds of seasons in a year- spring summer and winter.

The springs were known for their calm and cool conditions with temperatures not rising above the mid-twenties. In summer, the temperatures could rise to the thirties and the region would experience some rainfall along with lots of sunshine. Winter would set in slowly in the region but last for quite a while. The temperatures would drop below ten and the region would experience constant winds that ravaged both the steppe and alpine regions.

Plants

The plants of the Slaugm region were a mix of long grasses and deciduous vegetation of its steppes to the cold-adapted alpine vegetation of the mountains. The temperature and conditions of these two distinct ecosystems could vary by a lot and it was thus necessary for each type of vegetation to have adaptations for its specific region. The vegetation of the steppes were more versatile and vulnerable since they did not have to deal with any extreme conditions. Up in the mountains, the vegetation had to be able to handle the colder weather as well as the continuous winds that would blow across the region.

Some of the most famous plants of the region included the common garoughny grass that covered the vast steppes of the region, the torv deciduous trees that grew in the large woodlands of the steppe region, the iss'del coniferous trees of the alpine regions and the banyero grasses from the same region. The garoughny was the most common variant of grass that could be found in the steppe sections of the Slaugm region. These blades of grass could grow to a length of over three feet and were colored a distinctive light gold.


This grass did not require a lot of moisture and could go through long periods of drought without withering. It was a nutritious plant that was used as fodder to feed the domesticated animals of the region. They could also be dried and used as thatched roofs, and were known for their proper insulating qualities. The torv was found in many forests of the steppe region. It was a deciduous tree that would shed its leaves during the colder winter months. It could grow to an imposing height of over twenty meters and was a common source of wood for the early zu'aan settlers of the region.

The tree would bloom during the spring season when it produced edible bright green fruits that was consumed by the zu'aan as well as the wildlife of the region. The iss'del was a coniferous tree of the alpine region that grew along the mountain slopes. It had spiny leaves and also produced cones that were eaten by the tree dwelling animals of the region. These trees were very resilient plants that could withstand the cold as well as the windy conditions of the mountains.


It could reach up to a height of twenty meters and was used alongside the torv for most of the construction work in the region. The wood of this tree was almost black in color and produced a special tree sap that could water-proof its surface and protect it from weather elements such as rain, frost and rot. The banyero was an alpine grass that covered many of the exposed ground in the alpine regions. It had a distinctive blueish color and would produce small white petalled flowers when they bloomed in spring.

They were known to have a lot of medicinal properties and were regularly harvested by zu'aan healers and herbalists of the region.

Animals

The animals of the Slaugm region reflected the diversity of the ecosystems existing within the region. It was home to a wide variety of animals that ranged from the steppe dwelling mounts to the alpine and the underground animals that could be found deep within the mines and the underground cities. These animals were vital for the survival of the zu'aan who relied on them for use as mounts or for their meat and hide. Some of the most common types of wildlife in the region included the kosoni that could be domesticated and used as mounts.

The wild arangcer cattle that roamed the steppes in large herds, the keltorurn goats of the alpine regions and the large ingith spiders that were found deep underneath the surface of the earth. The kososni was a six-foot-tall mammal that came equipped with four muscled limbs that could propel it to speeds in excess of a hundred kilometers per hour. It had a lean and muscled frame with a very tough meat that was almost completely inedible. This limited its use as an edible source of protein, instead, it was used as a mount by the inhabitants of the region.


The kososni was well adapted to the conditions of the region. It did not require much water and had a very strong endurance that allowed it to cover large tracts of the steppes without any need for rest or refreshments. It existed freely in the wild and could react aggressively unless approached cautiously. It fed mainly on the plants of the region and took a particular liking to the fruits of the torv tree which were used to lure the animal when breaking them. It was one of the smartest and most emotionally responsive animals that could be encountered in the region.

They featured in many of the local zu'aan tales as loyal animals with distinct personalities. The arangcer was similar to a bison and could grow to lengths of up to seven feet. They were covered in long fuzzy fur along with a cover of fat- underneath. They were one of the most reliable sources of meat from among the animals of the region but required proper tactics and methods to avoid the attention of their entire herd while hunting. They would charge headlong into any perceived threats when alerted, aiming to trample and gore anyone on their path.


The keltorurn was a mountain goat that lived in the alpine mountains of the region. They were domesticated by many of the surface dwelling zu'aan of the region for their milk, meat and hide. The ingith spider was an underground dwelling species of giant spiders that the zu'aan would regularly encounter on their mining expeditions. It could grow to a length of five feet and was an unnerving sight for the unaccustomed. Beyond appearances, it could easily be handled by an adult zu'aan with enough discipline and training.

Killing one was seen as a rite of passage among the mining and underground dwelling communities of the region.
