Geography
The Ser’imu Shrubland is a region to the east of the Tannal Foothills and the Nyslusk Mountains Ridge regions. The region is as in the name a shrubland, with sparse trees scattered throughout the region creating a small thin forest. The region, before the zu’aan settled it had a small river running through it. It was diverted though, and the previous submerged caves slowly emptied out, hidden by the region’s various foliage. These caves are extremely deep, most connecting to one another through various thin and rather dangerous passageways.
These caves are where the Osther make their homes. They have done minimal work in the caves to make them more liveable as in carving out more private like living areas, but most work has gone toward stabilizing the various passageways. A small handful of members were lost in the earliest days after the move due to cave ins. It was deemed that the tunnels needed to be reinforced to allow quicker transportation between the areas as the clan was divided between whatever cave they reached before the sun came up. Since the start of their work, only two tunnels have been deemed safe enough for passage, connecting a scant few 5 caves.
Rain is common in the region, and while not dangerous, it does coat the cave floors in about 2 inches of water when it drains through the now dry river passage. Not much more than an annoyance the Osther mostly ignore it. The rain is slightly more of a problem in the Oolyik palace city as the upkeep of drainage was placed on the slaves and the zu’aan living within the walls are still struggling to learn the system; the city can often flood more than 5 inches because of this. This large amount of water, essentially acting as a new pond, has encouraged many new tree growths close to the city’s border.
The palace turned city used to be a large palace with a large garden and plaza. Since the securing of their wall, those living in the city started building small open homes allowing for internal walls later. To make as much room, the buildings were built where they shared 3 of their 4 walls with another neighbor. This took up much of the plaza with only small spaces as ‘communal’ areas. The inside of the palace became a warehouse and government building mix. As the palace had numerous rooms for visiting leaders, some walls were torn down and made to hold any goods brought back by the caravans.
The used to be throne room was converted into a large meeting hall for the highest members of the city. The remaining rooms were turned into barracks for the new soldiers who weren’t in active duty. The gardens were almost completely torn out as well. The area was converted to a farm so that the zu’aan could grow as much food as possible and trade for the rest. It became a communal area to be taken care of by all the zu’aan living there so that it wasn’t any one person’s fault if the crops were less than or unsuccessful in a season as a way to prevent rioting.
Plants
The region has a sparse forest made up of shrub like plants and moderately tall trees. The quanon is the main tree of the region and is a strange specimen. The original strain of the quanon tree died out centuries before the Awakening age. This was mainly as the plant had accidentally crossbred with another neighboring region’s tree to the point it made breeding with ‘purebred’ quanon trees incompatible. The new quanon trees looked the same as the predecessor, though unlike the original the new does not loose all its leaves in the coldest part of the season.
The new strain became a mix of deciduous and evergreen foliage where about half, more or less depending on which genetics were stronger, of the leaves would change color and fall off over the year. The ‘evergreen’ part of the quanon stayed the green color the tree is known for in the summers, though the deciduous leaves would turn to a near black brown before completely dying. The quanon tree- specifically the evergreen branches, are the most common place for any tree dwelling creature to make their homes, such as the seniyzon, as it provides year round cover and safety.
One of the plants that grows in the region that the Ser’imu is known for is the yishiru. Similar to truffles, the yishiru is an underground growing fungi that is safe for consumption by zu’aan. It is the common food for the ch’tisadur due to its high nutrient content- so much so it’s become a staple in their courting and mating process. The fungi largely contain properties that encourage muscle growth while burning fat deposits in the body; small amounts were given to the Osther to aid in muscle growth for their gladiator like fights, both for sheer appearance and added strength.
At extremely high marked up prices, the zu’aan of the Ser’imu used to sell the fungi to other zu’aan armies on the selling point that “Stronger fighters will allow you to crush your enemies”. Their supplies of the fungi were extremely unstable though, as it depended on the season, since they would steal from the Ch’tisadur to make up their stock. They knew in a general sense that the yishiru would grow underneath the _tree_, but most of their searches only gave a small handful of the fungi in return. What the zu’aan of the region did not know was that the yishiru growth was highly dependent on growing beneath a seniyzon nest- one that has been there for more than one season.
Seniyzon young were often messy when eating and the fallen remains of meals would prompt the growth, but only after it had been exposed to the parent Seniyzon’s gut acid. The mid-processing of the nutrients that happened in their stomach before regurgitating to their young is where the Yishiru gets its main properties from, and why the fungi, despite attempts is not capable of growing on any farm. Most did not find this out though until they sunk a great amount of supplies into the attempt, as the Yishiru is a slow growing and maturing fungi, taking a years at minimum to grow to the smallest harvestable amount.
Animals
The Ser’imu region houses an extremely dangerous predator. Named the seniyzon, the bird is similar to a harpy eagle. It has a short wingspan, allowing for quick maneuvering between the denser tree groups without risk of their wingspan posing a safety risk. Their claws when relaxed measure nearly the size of a zu’aan’s head, and when extended to the max is well over that. Seniyzon often hunt creatures heavier and larger than themselves to bring back to their nests. A parent Seniyzon creates multiple nests- one for themself, one for their chicks, and one as a backup incase one of their main two becomes damaged.
It was not uncommon for the zu’aan leaders of the Ser’imu in the past to keep a seniyzon as a pet, as one of the earliest leaders deemed the creature to be the city’s banner and symbol. Its said that this was because the leader had seen how quick, effective, and ruthless the creature was in its hunting capabilities and that was what the leader wanted for his people. When not captive, the seniyzon would live in the various trees scattered across the region. It was rare to see two seniyzon together, and if it you ever did it was considered a sign of good luck.
The wild seniyzon in Ser’imu often did not care for the zu’aan and would pointedly ignore any attempts by them to gain their attention. Captive seniyzon by contrast appeared to adore their owners- one even dying in a counter-attack to protect its owner when the leader managed to barely dodge an assassination attempt. After the city was all but wiped out though, the following leaders could not go on their ‘initiation’ mission of bringing back a Seniyzon chick for their pet. Because of this, the Seniyzon symbol started to fade over the years as the last of the captive Seniyzon bloodline started to die out.
One of the most common prey for the seniyzon is a boar like creature that’s a distant cousin of the cinse going by the name ch’tisadur. The ch’tisadur when young are little to no threat, but when older can cause a zu’aan serious damage. Its coat is a deep red brown with deer like spots scattered across it’s body. Often taking 2 or more years to mature, ch’tisadur young are kept extremely close to the parent caring for them. It isn’t until reaching maturity that one’s tusks start to grow in- upward facing on females, downward (almost like fangs) on males.
While decent for fighting, the tusks on males are most often used for digging for yishiru. The male who finds the most gets the female of its desire; the yishiru saved for after the ch’tisadur mother has had her young as the truffle like fungi provides the needed nutrients for healthy growth in the ch’tisadur young. Ch’tisadur up until about a year and a half are the most common victims to the Seniyzon as they are still within the individual hunting and carrying size and weight; a fully mature ch’tisadur may also end up prey, though this is only if food has been scarce for the season as it is usually a parental team that goes after a fully mature ch’tisadur.
