Geography

The Samgh Forest Hill is a small region North of the Toras Terrace. It’s covered in a lush forest, with an extremely large hill in the middle of the region. The Kinper knew the area was perfect for them when finding it, due to it being simultaneously close to, while also distanced from the other clans and tribes. This allowed them privacy, and security while also being close enough that if there were a need for supplies it would not be too distant that they could not quickly conduct trade. They built their homes into the side of the hill so that only their doors and windows showed to the outside world.

Being underground offered a natural cooling system from the warmth of the region, better than anything that the Kinper could build in the area. The hill was large enough that they could build a tunnel system inside it so there was almost no need outside unless they were traveling to other regions. The tunnels provided quick transport through the hill and made it quicker to travel to the opposite side which was a common occurrence for the residents. When their government started to become overbearing, the Kinper decided to build a hidden room in hill.

There they would partake in illegal meetings, worship (as their government made it illegal), or special events. To keep the room secret, everyone not in the government had a specific amount of time allowed in the room so each member in the clan had the same amount of time hidden away from the leaders. The Kinper originally had torches installed into the tunnel walls to light the path, but do to lack of a proper ventilation system, the switched to bioluminescent plants that they grew on the ceiling and floors. Over time as the Kinper lost their use of their legs, they started to expand their tunnels, paths and walk way areas to accommodate the wider area required for carts and other transportation modes now required from only having two functional limbs.

They created a trolly or mine like track system for their carts, designating specific tunnel paths for cart transportation only, as to keep the others as clear as possible. Outside the hill, the region has extremely large trees taking up most of the land. The floor of the forest was covered in thick brush, making the forest look more like a jungle in areas. The Kinper tied ropes to the tree branches for transportation, which every decade or so need to be replaced or moved, due to the plant growth. In the South Western edge of the territory, the Kinper leaders have the soldiers fallen during battle buried in unmarked graves.

In the North Eastern edge, they have grand tombs for the members of the government who have passed. A bit to the South of their hill, there’s a relatively small clearing on flat land where the Kinper would throw parties outside. They were often shut down extremely quick, to the area is rarely utilized.

Plants

Samgh region is covered in a lush forest that at areas crosses more into a jungle type foliage than forest. The forest floor is covered in a thick layer of brush like plants that are extremely quick growing. The Kinper of the region never bothered to cut paths into it, due to the quick growing nature, so all the plants remained for the most part wild. One of these ground level plants is the iasursuir. The Iasursuir is a shrub type plant that has giant fern like leaves. The bush’s branches grow to about average zu’aan waist height, with the leaves stretching out and reaching as tall as a zu’aan.

It holds its seeds on the underside of its leaves to keep them as protected as possible. Unlike most other plants, the young Iasursuir relies on the mature parent to provide them nutrients. They will connect roots creating a network with its sibling plants and follow the lead of their parent as when to bloom or unfurl their leaves to the best times to catch light. Over the years it takes for the plants to fully mature, the adult plant will slowly start to die until they all reach full maturity. At the point right before its death, the parent Iasursuir will send one last signal to the children to release their seeds, restarting the cycle.

A quick growing plant is the aelisudil. The aelisudil is a large ground cover vining plant. Also like Iasursuir, it has fern like leaves, this time along a vine instead. The leaves are notably smaller but grow in much larger quantities. This creates a large tangle on the forest floor and is one of the specific plants that the Kinper do no wish to deal with. A single vine can grow upwards of 50 feet in as short a period as a week. When left on its own, it will max out around a total length of 1000 feet across all the vines due to the dying or dead portions taking a significant amount of resources from the whole plant.

When the Kinper originally tried clearing the forest floor though, the removal of the dying and dead material lead to an unprompted boom in growth that was nearly triple the regular growth. The Aelisudil while usually staying low to the ground, during the boom started to grow upward along the trees. The trees were not harmed, though with the network set up the aelisudil have started consistently growing vines up and across trees forming pseudo net like weaves. The main tree of the region is the nainasti tree. Its branches are extremely thick, making them strong enough for the Kinper to attach ropes to them for swinging transportation.

The weight though over time warps the branches downward a bit and forces the Kinper to either change branches or trees every few years. The aelisudil does grow moderately fast but it can still take upwards of 50 years for new branches to grow to a proper height as well as be strong enough to support extensive Kinper usage, so the Kinper keep an extremely close eye on the trees they use for transportation to make sure that they are healthy and undamaged.

Animals

The thick brush of the region gives many homes and hiding spots to a variety of small creatures- insect, mammal, and reptile types alike. While the foliage is dense, it is not particularly nutritious forcing most of the creatures in the region into an omnivore eating habit. The trees also hold many creatures. One type is extremely similar to sugar gliders called aela. They are small rodent like creatures, about the size of a zu’aan’s palm. They have a section of skin connecting their front and hind limbs that allow them to glide short to moderately long distances between tree branches, usually topping out at 25 feet before they are too low to reach any sturdy branches.

They have two small pouches, one on their abdomen and the other on their back. They’ll often use these pouches to carry their young, or when there’s no young, they’ll store small seeds and nesting material for their homes. They make their dens in the trees, using the leftovers from the vaarai, which they fill with various leaves and packing material to pad the inside. The vaarai pass through the region, often staying longer periods as their arrival coordinates with their young being born or being on the cusp of being too large to carry but too young to make large distance travel on their own.

While there they share their old dens with the aela and have a symbiotic with the species. They will often hunt other creatures similar or a bit larger than the aela, effectively protecting them, and the aela will take care of the young vaarai. The long travel to the region often results in the young Vaarai having a number of injuries from slight scratches to torn gliding skin or wings. The aela have a ‘nursing’ habit where they will adopt and attempt to heal any creature of similar sizes to them- even though they fully recognize them as different creatures than them- which the young fall into.

This relationship started after the first handful of seasons where the Vaarai had left the Old’kali region and has remained such a constant that each vaarai family line tends to stick with the same aela family. Some have even gone as far as to make more burrows in the immediate vicinity for the aela if they start to outgrow their single burrow. The vaarai and the aela live in close groups to each other still though, for safety in numbers. The hilonun is a large jaguar like creature, who has a smooth slick skin that simulates damp leaves.

If caught unprepared or alone, a family of vaarai and aela can be completely wiped out in a manner of minutes from a long hilonun. Because of this the two have developed a warning call if one is spotted the dens in the mile radius will evacuate for the better part of two days to make sure that the hilonun is gone for good. The Hilonun will often stay on the ground as its easier to sneak around without chance of being caught while searching for a den. They do make their homes in the trees as well, though only tend to do so when it has rained or is too damp to stay on the ground because they are more obvious to spot while out of the dense foliage.
