Geography

The S'arana Crag was a large stretch of open terrain that was characterized by hard and difficult terrain with regular outcroppings of rocky mountains and hills. These outcroppings were a regular occurrence throughout the S'arana, rising to a maximum height of over four thousand meters. These rocky crags were made of sedimentary rocks and colored a dirty grey with no vegetation growing on it. The rest of the terrain was extremely uneven and had many different kinds of surfaces including bogs, mud and sharp rock surfaces.

The vegetation in the area was mostly alpine with a combination of coniferous trees and resilient plants and shrubs that could endure the difficult conditions of the region. Apart from the dull greyness of the rocky outcrops the surroundings were a smattering of color with a mixture of evergreen trees and reddish fir trees. The area was extremely isolated and had no major settlements or contact with the rest of the surrounding regions due to its vastness of its interior and the impossibility of constructing any traversable road through the difficult terrain.

The region was home to a few rivers and streams that originated out of these rocky outcrops and flowed out into region before disappearing into cracks and holes in the ground. The few zu'aan natives of the region survived on traditional methods of agriculture and hunting for their food. Agriculture was conducted in a very small scale and had very inconsistent yields due to the unfavorable soil and climatic conditions of the region. The region had a cold and wet climate and had two distinctive seasons, the rainy summers and snowy winters.

During the summers the region would experience moderate temperatures in the twenties along with incessant rainfall that would turn all the soil surfaces of the region into muddy puddles. A few flowers would bloom during this season turning the terrain into a kaleidoscope of colors. Most of these flowers were seasonal and would die out once the season ended. During the winters, the temperature would drop to freezing temperatures. Most of the plants would wither away and the only remaining vegetation were the alpine trees that dotted the landscape.

Most of the brooks and streams would freeze over and the region would experience light to moderate snow fall. The wind would pick up during this season, adding to the cold and the ice lodged between the rocky crags would further deteriorate the surfaces of the rocky crags and lead to rockslides once the snow melted. The surface of the region would turn into semi frozen slush, complicating travel and communication even further. The region had very negligible signs of surface construction and structures because of the complete reliance of most cultures on the cracks and caves within the rocky crags for habitation.

This contributed to the very primitive lifestyles and lack of any advancements among the inhabitants for a long time. This would only change with the arrival of the Siorm kin’tonis who would venture out beyond their crag habitats and start inhabiting and cultivating the open lands.

Plants

The S'arana Crag was populated by a wide variety of alpine vegetation. The trees here were adapted to survive the freezing winter temperatures and could handle the adverse soil conditions including the waterlogged mud and rocky terrain. The vegetation here received very little sunlight due to the rainclouds that coverd the skies almost year round. The most prominent vegetation of the region included the coniferous itane tree, the adcpol fir and the rynshy and udynu plants.

The itane was the tallest tree in the region standing at a maximum height of over forty feet, and accounted for more than fifty percent of the tree population in the region. It was a coniferous tree with needle like leaves and dry cones and had a thick strong bark that was used for various purposes including roofing for outdoor camps, armor and as an eating utensil. The wooden stems were also used to build rudimentary spears for hunting as well as spikes that were used in animal traps or deployed as defensive structures.

The tree could survive in almost all ground conditions including rocky terrain and waterlogged conditions. The adcpol fir tree was another coniferous tree that occurred in large numbers in the region. It had fern leaves with soft pillowy texture that were a distinctive dull red in color. Clumps of these adcpol trees could be identified by their red tops which easily stood out from the rest of the terrain. The tree was hardy like all other vegetation in the area and could grow to over thirty meters in height.

The tree had a variety of uses from its wood which was most commonly used in bonfires due to its dry texture and natural oils that could sustain fires for long periods of time. Its ferns were regularly used as insulation in between clothing by the natives of the region who had to endure long periods of exposure to the wet and cold climates. The rynshy was a small shrub that grew among rock formations in the area. Its roots were planted in little layers of soil and water that were stuck between holes and crevices of the rocky crags.

They were very small plants and hard to distinguish from the local surroundings. These unassuming plants were in high demand among the kin'toni who valued it for its psychedelic properties. Many ancient medical practices called for the use of its extracts to subdue patients and put them in a calm and peaceful state. The udynu was a type of grass that grew along wet patches in the S'arana's terrain. They were particularly suited to areas with high water content and could be found in plenty among muddy bogs and areas where the rainwater remained trapped on the surface.

The grass could reach up to a maximum height of three meters when left to grow in the wild. Its stalks were a bright green color and were tipped off with tiny blue flowers that grew out of tiny stalks on its ends.

Animals

The animals of the S'arana Crag were adapted to survive in the cold, wet and barren conditions of the region. Most of these creatures relied on hunting and killing other creatures for food due to the general lack of edible vegetation in the region. The animals of the region include the endem, the torbur and the neangenth. The endem was a large bear like creature that lived within the wooded regions of the S'arana Crag. The animal was a quadruped mammal that could reach amazing speeds over short distances.

It had opposable thumbs and could climb the itane and adcpol trees. The endem could regularly be found taking shelter on branches and treetops and regularly climbed these trees in search of bird nests and edible tree sap. Its large size allowed it to easily overpower most of the wildlife and its long five inched claws combined with its large sharp teeth could tear apart flesh and bone in seconds. Even with its fearsome offensive repertoire, the endem had very little hunting opportunities due to the limited amount of wildlife in the region.

It spent most of the coldest parts of winter hibernating- to avoid starvation. The endem had a thick coat of soft black fur that had great wicking properties and allowed the mammal to stay warm and dry even in the snowy seasons. The pelt of the endem was highly valued among the kin'toni who used them for their clothing as well as roughly sewn mitts and shoes. The torbor were extremely agile scavengers who hunted in packs to make up for their lack of size and power. When collected in large packs, the torbor were capable of hunting down even the most fearsome endem.

They were covered in a ragged mess of thick grey hair that blended in with the environment in winter. They were extremely territorial and would regularly clash with other torbor packs for domination of territory. These regular battles would leave behind many dead carcasses and wounded that the remaining groups would devour without mercy. In this sense, they were a purely survivalist animal that had been molded by the rough environment. Their teeth and bones were a regular component used for carving native tools and ornaments.

The neangenth were large bee-like insects that could reach over three inches in size. They built their hives inside hollows and cavities of the coniferous trees in the region and were found in plenty among the itane and adcpol trees. Their habitats were regularly plundered by both wildlife and zu'aan for the sweet and reinvigorating nectar collected from flowers over the summer months. The nectar could stave off hunger when consumed in moderate amounts and could also cause delirium and memory loss when consumed in excess.

The neangenth could be found in large quantities during the rainy summer and were easily identifiable by their yellow bodies and sharp buzzing sounds. The larger ones among the neangenth were capable of stinging intruders with lethal amounts of poison that led to coagulation of blood and death if untreated.
