Geography

The Paahak Mangrove Marshes is a mid-sized region South east of the Rynper Jade Valley located along the river cutting across Taerel to the west of the Toras Terrace. Around 75% of the region is located south of the river while the remaining 25% is on the north side. Due to the soil type of the area, most of the region is a marsh- hence the marshes in its name. During the majority of the year, the marshes will be rather dry and low in water content, but in the early spring season when the river floods, the marshes will be extremely damp and create a rather humid climate in the region.

Rain is moderately common in the region, though only in short quick showers. The most concentrated grouping of showers is during the beginning of the spring season- part of the reason for the river’s overflowing. During that time, its common place for there to be multiple showers a day that last less than an hour before tapering off or moving out of the region. Winds are extremely low on the surface of Paahak, but higher up in the atmosphere the winds can reach nearly 200 miles per hour giving the quick cloud movement associated with the seasonal showers.

The Vesh’shya settled in the center of the region, a good distance south of the river splitting the region in two. In the center of their town, they built a library to house all their accumulated knowledge, with a connected reliquary branch for their collected ‘relics’ from other clans and settlements. To protect the various parchments and papers, natural dehumidifying tactics like charcoal and salts were kept and built into the building, creating various recessed wall shelves and niches throughout the rooms in the building. In the connected basement is where they created their holding areas for any prisoners that the clan might have.

Further south toward the edge of their town the Vesh’shya built a warehouse like building to store paintings and drawings- both from those gathered outside and within the region. Along with keeping the dehumidifying niches in the warehouse, it being built in the lower half of the region that flooded far less than the northern half of the region kept the various precious artworks safe from potential damage. Also in the lower half of the region were many fields. The larger fields were kept for the various farm animals they tended to; some native to the region, though most not.

The smaller fields were kept marginally closer in proximity to the river for crop raising. Most of the homes in the town were kept for when Vesh’shya clan members were returning for short periods during their travels, and those transitioning into staying in the region permanently. Once they had more or less mastered their selected specialty- those who were specifically farming in particular- would move to the homes in the southern half of town or further out in the fields of the region. Each home farther out from town would be associated with a single farm animal and crop field that would be under that clan member’s care.

Inside the town, with only a small handful scattered out in the fields, were various small buildings for things like smithing building for smelting- specifically tool making, and weapons training workout areas- both for basic learning and skills upkeep.

Plants

The Paahak Mangrove Marshes has a variety of natural to the region and imported plants. Native to the are a range ‘cousin’ tree species but the two most used are the aisty and the srrathen. They are both evergreen like species where they keep their leaves throughout the year even in the coldest weather. The srrathen is mainly used for the structural building of the Ves’shya homes as its wood is stronger and more pest resistant than the aisty. They mature quickly, most being full grown within a decade, allowing for a relatively quick turnaround in building material for the clan’s homes when the tree replanting is handled properly.

The Aisty are similar to a palm tree in appearance and are used mainly in the thatching for the Ves’shya homes. Like the Srrathen they grow quickly, though they do not fully mature as quick. In a good handful of seasons of growth, a single aisty tree can thatch well over an entire roof; while a handful of bad results in less growth, even in the worst seasons an aisty tree is resilient enough to cover the majority of a single home. The aisty mainly grow along the river where the soil is the dampest year-round, while the Srrathen are more inclined to grow near the north and south borders of the region as they are less flood resistant.

There’s a smaller variety of flowering, herb and spice type plants also native to the region. The most common and widely used flowers are similar to lotus’ though instead of flat green pads that grow on the water’s surface, the leaves grow like pond grass. They grow on the banks of the river, in the especially muddy quadrants as it holds their short roots better. They were given the name Assa, with each color (depending on the acidity of the soil) being a slight variation on the name: Assassa being a near black flower and Assirra being a pale creamy yellow.

The assa like in the Undtur region- due to the Ves’shya clan’s affinity for the arts- would be harvested and used for pigment making. When harvested and used to the max, the assa can provide a set of 3 primary mixing colors as well as a black charcoal and an ash white for a completely rounded color palette. The Ves’shya also had a range of imported plants. The most used were imported crops that they tended to in their fields and gained extensive knowledge of. Over the years as regions like Ler’ther developed and discovered plants safe for kin’toni consumption, the originally zu’aan only safe crops that were grown in the region expanded.

The originally only safe for zu’aan crops like the Beponi were kept as ways to trade with the tribes or civilizations as need, as well as maintaining their application of growing knowledge for the species. The safe for kin’toni plants were used in their cooking and creating of meals- though it was never a strong focus. As part of their expeditions, when needed, they would trade the meal recipes for more seeds to bring back to the region. With the large variety of plants in their possession, the Ves’shya created botanical like gardens throughout the main city surrounding their library.

Animals

Like with the plants in the region, the Ves’shya’s gathering of knowledge led them to also gather numerous animals in their travels. Rarer in their gatherings were aquatic species- mainly due to the equipment needed to bring the creatures back, but there are a number of exotic aquatic species that are kept in aquarium like enclosures. The buildings were build in the north section of the region, so that it was right by the river allowing easy transportation from boats to the facility. Most species were of the fish type, like the chonral najus from the Sulysh region or the Eastern gilgonamo of the Undtur Grassy Lake.

Due to limited space in the aquarium and the time it would take to get back to the Paahak from either coast. The largest variety of imported animals were the ‘farm’ type, such as cattle or boar like creatures. Along with cooking their meals, the Ves’shya learned how to extract blood from their herds without killing them allowing them to have a steady supply of food. Kept not for food, there’s a widely used bird called the tonpta. The tonpta is similar to a chicken in size, but with tail feathers like a turkey. They’re mainly kept for their eggs, as the yolk in the eggs are one of the major binders that are used for the paints made in the region.

Other paint types require water soluble tree gum, or refined oil to be imported so those are less commonly used. There’s a number of wild animals native to the region as well. While not fighting unless they have to, the Vas’shya often have to fight off such animals to protect their herds and crops. One major nuisance is a large-scaled moose like creature called an undilsa. The undilsa live near the river and are extremely strong swimmers and divers, though they have terrible eyesight.

This often leads to them (especially in groups) rushing to the point of nearly stampeding when they catch any movement they deem too close or hostile- which is extremely often. They have large horns like moose, which are extremely strong and are large risks when being rushed, as well as having moderately tough scales making it hard to get proper damaging hits on them, so its always a ‘plan a’ to scare the Undilsa away when possible. They are omnivores, though they rarely partake in their meat-eating capabilities as long as there’s enough vegetation for them to consume.

Also native to the region is the chomkaki. This is the major fish that lives in the central quadrant of the Taerel region. The chomkaki are an extremely strange fish, as they look like koi fish, but due to their original evolution being stuck in lower water levels their pelvic fins developed in a way that they can ‘walk’ on the muddy river floor as well as swim in deeper waters. They grow in a variety of sizes, though the most common in the Paahak region is about the length of two zu’aan hands (about 12-18 inches long). The chomkaki though are capable of (with enough space) growing well over 3 feet in length and weighing hundreds of pounds.

So they are a popular export for regions capable of giving them the space they need. The Ves’shya have perfected techniques for fishing the chomkaki- one of which includes cornering and chasing a group out onto the shore into a waiting net buried in the mud.
