Geography

The ravines are made of a rock that is particularly susceptible to erosion by water, but besides the erosion of the rocks, the ravines were formed due to the intrinsic processes of the continental plates. The scholars agree that the area was lifted by the action of the continental plates. The lifting of the surface gave the traversing river to erode further, but due to the solid nature of the rocks, the vertical erosion was far quicker than the horizontal erosion of the river. It is possible to evaluate the age of the formation of the river as well as the time taken for the ravines to form.

The scholars wish to study the process further in order to try and affect and alter the solid rocks of the drylands. The convenience of living in the caverns is far too great for the kin'toni for them to not try and crate other such locations in the other parts of the world, and so several scholars studying geology of the region are funded by the council itself. In the past few years they have been able to determine that the ravine is not formed of any singular form of rock but rather layers of different kinds of the rocks that eroded and reacted differently to the agent of denudation.

Although some regions were worked by water rather easily, but a great number of the layers were eroded ever so slowly that it took nearly a million years for the whole geological structure to have been formed by natural methods. Therefore the scholars are now testing the reaction of the rocks in the region by understanding the effect of artificial agents of denudation such as acids and dynamite. As far as the weather is concerned, it is quite harsh on the surface but the bases of the ravine are very pleasant throughout the year.

The region falls in the direct way of geostrophic winds that carry moisture from the ocean in the west but due to the way in which the Intertropical convergence zone moves during the time of winter, the winds are only overhead in that time of the year, as such there is rain mainly during the winter, and the summers are quite dry. This weather is ideal for the growth of yatla fruits, as well as narena veins, and as such the base of the ravines are filled with plantations of uyal, vaakea and most importantly narena veins.

The grapes are used to prepare wines for the Empire, although the wines made from the region are not as highly regarded as those from other regions of the Terael , they are certainly the most productive region for wine. The vintages prepared here are sent all over the Terael , with the armies being the primary customer of the wine from the ravine, the wineries here are owned directly by the council, and not the Tal Ranoth that made a gift of the grape plantations to the council when the university was built with the Council as its patron.

The Neloren Canyon Ravine is the depository of the kin'toni government, this is where the permanent records of the kin'toni have been kept for the past millennia, and in this time the ravine has become almost like a place of worship for the kin'toni of the scholarly arts. The ravine is ideal for the storage of the records of the governance of the kin'toni clans because of the stable and dry atmosphere and the availability of the rock deep rock caverns that keep the rays of the light far from the working kin'toni.

And also allow them to store large amounts of their books and records away from moisture that would cause for them to spoil and decay over the centuries they are supposed to last. Besides being the depository for the scholarly works and official records of the kin'toni people, the ravines are also the paper mill of the kin'toni, here the felled trees from all over the Terael are brought by river to be turned to the paper which forms the blood of the kin'toni institutions of governance.

The kin'toni of the region pay fealty to the clan of Tal Ranoth, which is given the charge for the administration of the Neloren Canyon Ravine by the Pioneer clans’ council itself. Besides being the ruling clan of the region, the Tal Ranoth are the most ardent scholars in all of the world, they have spent the past centuries meticulously going through all the works of the zu'aan available to them in order to collect and decipher whatever information that can be applied to furthering the cause of the kin'toni clans.

Theirs is not however the work of experiments, and machinery, the ravine and Tal Ranoth are far too important to be utilised in the planning and conduct of experiments. They are dedicated to the development of theory and for careful and cold review of the kin'toni rule, as part of their charge, the Tal Ranoth hold a biennial meeting with the Pioneer Clans’s council and the martial junta of the kin'toni armies to present a thorough analysis of the kin'toni population, the status of their supply lines and highlight alternative protocols for the better management of both the war and the civiil society as well.

The Tal Ranoth are the brains of the kin'toni people, it is known by all the kin'toni that if not for the Tal Ranoth and the facilities of the Ravines, the kin'toni clans would have long since fragmented. Their input in the administration is paramount and their clan members are welcome all across the Terael for stay, although few ever leave the ravines, the ones that do find themselves treated with such honour and respect as few others of the kin'toni clans.

The rivers flowing in the ravine are the source of life in the dry landscape, they flow at the bases of the deep ravines and gorges of the canyon, allowing the growth of some plant life and animals, but mainly due to the fact that they are the means by which the ravines are connected to the rest of the Terael with ease. They allow the transport of reports and records from the various corners of the empire to be collected every turn of the moon, as well as allowing the essential supplies of blood stock which feeds the kin'toni residing in the ravines, as well as any visiting scholars.

Plants

The dry summers and wet winter seasons have a significant impact on the kind of natural vegetation that grows in the ravines, as mentioned the surface of the ravines is bare and does not support a lot of plants or animals, and this maybe due to the harsh winds that the surface is exposed to. On the other hand, the base of the ravines has lush growth due to the influence of the cool river that makes its way through the ravine and the safety from the harsh winds, in addition to these conditions, the base of the ravine also receives several hours of decent sunlight despite its considerable height due to the orientation of the ravines.

Among the most productive and prevalent species of the ravines are the unique bamboos that are naturally found in the region, prior to the the settling of the kin'toni in the region, the area had been completely dominated by the unique plant. The bamboo is a soft lignified grass that grows up to heights exceeding 12–13 feet feet at tis longest, growing in dense patches, the outer surface of the grass is very hard and nearly as much as any tree wood, but once a cross section is made, the inner core of the bamboo is not only soft but also moist, and has been adopted in certain culinary preparations.

One of the most popular preparations made from the bamboo of the ravine are the blood soaked cores, which are produced in the steppes and transported all across the Terael as part of the military rations for the warring armies. The cores for these rations are prepared in the ravines and transported by river to the steppes where the bloodstock is ranched. Another use of the bamboo grown in the region is the milling of paper for the common use of the kin'toni government.

Unlike the Greenwood paper, the paper produced from the bamboo plant is less durable but it absorbs pigment and ink just as well as the Greenwood paper and so it is used for the recording of all the other information regarding the kin'toni besides that which is recorded on the Greenwood. The discovery of the milling of the bamboo for production of paper replaces the use of parchment and leather that had been previously used since those materials were more difficult to work and did not retain the pigment for a long time.

The narena vines and the uyal and vaakea trees that are grown in large numbers on the bases were grown brought here from the wetlands, and have thrived in the environment, the fruits produced in the region are far sweeter than those found in the wetlands themselves, the scholars believe this to be due to the nature and unique timing of the precipitation cycle in the region. The sweeter narena and vaakea means that wines and a happier stock that is fed on the citrus fruits. The citrus foods are used to feed the forests created for the farming of the sapiens monkeys which are among the source of the most nutritious of the blood stock.

Animals

The ravines have a large population of aayaala-naka (fruit bats) in the caverns, which are related to the kin'toni species of the bats but are much larger in size, they also happen to nocturnal but they do not seem to mind the daylight and rely on the use of their eyes just as much as they on the use of their echolocation. The aayaala-naka live in colonies but do not have a very rigid social hierarchy and freely leave and join other communities of aayaala-naka without any obvious consequences.

The ravines are their natural homes, and are found here in the greatest numbers, they have become a really important part of the kin'toni society due to the role they have come to occupy and as such are found all the Terael . The aayaala-naka are omnivorous despite what the name suggests and can eat whatever they can manage, although not overly fond of hunting, they can be effective hunters when so required. They are very large for winged mammals and have one of the largest wingspans of all flying creatures and are second only to flying kin'toni clans.

There are claims that when the kin'toni first evolved their wings, they sought to mirror the flying of the aayaala-naka the most. Due to the fruit bats large wingspan and capacity to eat almost everything, the aayaala-naka are able to fly incredibly large distances and are therefore found all across the Terael . Their innate intelligence allows these creatures to be trained with ease, and so the flying clans of the kin'toni on the order of the council have now trained several thousand aayaala-naka to form a flying division that is used to primarily transport supplies rather than messages.

This is due to the limitation of the bats to fly all own, despite several attempts, the flying kin'toni have been unable to effectively train a singular bat to travel long distances all alone or even a small group. However as a large flock of about two hundred to five hundred individuals they are able to cross the whole of Terael in little less than a few short months. This division of the trained aayaala-naka all function under the supervision of a singular flying kin'toni that forms the core of their groups, and they have become an essential supplement to the gigantic supply chain network of the kin'toni.

And the addition of the aayaala-naka division has allowed the kin'toni to spread a little further and extend their war fronts into regions that are not yet accessible through the traditional modes of transport, a primary example being the tundra which is once such new battle front. The aayaala-naka due to their gigantic wingspan, large size and finally numerous numbers are used to transport supplies with a unique rig that was designed for use by several bats at the same time allowing them to carry rations of blood to the warfront and records of documents from the capitals and to the centres of power.
