Geography

Ler’ther is located just South West of the Toras Terrace. Being right next to the Toras, Ler’ther’s soil contains similar levels of nutrients making it still within the optimal levels for farming. The only hills in the region create a semi-barrier to the other regions, enclosing Ler’ther. There’s a small grove of trees that is located in the center of the mini valley created by the hills. The grove’s vegetation are all small species (including the trees), making the large homes the Kaxod made for themselves the highest structures in the region.

The Kaxod divided the flat land evenly amongst the homes. Being that the Ler’ther Bushy Grove was uninhabited for as long as any zu’aan or kin’toni could remember, unlike the Toras Terrace, the underground aqueduct built by the neighboring regions (surrounding for the Toras) did not go through the Grove but passes close to the border in multiple places. The closest being an access area at the base of one of the hills in the North-East most corner of the border.

The region itself while expansive, is still only considered a small to mid-sized territory compared to most other regions under kin’toni control. Ler’ther to many clans is considered a sister region to the Toras, in that they are of similar natural properties and nearly the same size. The majority of the region in the valley is flat plains, but in the center most section, there’s a small cluster of trees that give Ler’ther the ‘Grove’ in its name. The Kaxod carefully thinned the trees in the Grove a bit to fit a building that they designated.

That would be used for group meetings, debates, or overflow storage if any of the homes ran out of their own allotted storage. The flat plains were, using tips from the Yoush, optimized for farming, being left in the care of each of their own respective houses. The Kaxod made sure to take extremely good care of their land and the things living in it, as they believed that the land was the main reason and ‘lifeblood’ that made it capable for them to be able to live similar lives to before their turning- or even the lives they were unable to when they were zu’aan.

As such they believed it was their responsibility to protect the land as much as possible, to secure the future of themselves and any future clan members. They made sure in their building and farming to cause as little damage to the land as possible- only doing what was needed to keep optimal result in their efforts. The taverns that were created when word got around to other clans were mainly built near the bases of the hills along the outer edges of the region.

This was to minimize the loss of farming land, as the Kaxod did not use the hills for farming like the Yoush (while zu’aans) did. It was also due to the fact it was quicker for travelers to rest upon arriving, and quicker for their departure as they were already near the border of the region closest to their home.

Plants

Many of the plants in Ler’ther were of the farming variety. Some species naturally found their way into the region from the Toras Terrace, while others were either crossbred or imported from other territories. The Kaxod, due to their vegetarian nature, made sure to only keep plants that were either used for their meals, namely soups, or that would keep the ecosystem balanced. They respected the land very much and did not want to damage the area beyond repair by removing too much of the natural plant life for their own sake.

One of the types from the Toras was the oager- a field grass type plant that the Kaxod cleared out most of so that they could set up farming areas. Due to the quick growing nature of the plant, it had to be cleared out every season before planting. What was taken out would be used as fire kindling, as it is very flammable when dry- and it gives a pleasant scent when burned. Also from the Toras region a mutated version of a plant- beponi- that grew on the hillsides. The mutated version of the plant (called beponix), unlike the original species, was suitable for the kin’toni to consume.

While not particularly high in nutrient content, it did have a strong flavor. This was perfect, as it provided the option for different types of soups; depending on the harvest time determined the kind of flavor the Beponix gave. Harvesting extremely early gave a bitter flavor, perfect for a photonix based soup, as it’s an extremely sweet flavor. Harvesting mid-season gives a rich flavor, which was perfect on its own. Harvesting at the end of the season gives a mild to extremely spicy palette, which is saved for special occasions such as the ‘end of season’ harvest, or other special events.

One crossbred plant was the pifleek. Pifleek was an accidental creation; the Kaxod had stored the pijina seeds in close proximity to throfleek seeds. The Pijina is a root type plant with single stock flowers which has a habit of self-germinating. The Throfleek plant is a vining plant that when mixed with another plant, tends to have the dominant genes and absorbs the other. While in storage, the pijina seeds started to grow on their own, and the Throfleek seeds reacted to the growth with their own, eventually taking over the Pijina sprouts and making the pifleek plant hybrid.

The pifleek plant contains the high nutrients of the throfleek plant, but grows majorly in the form of the pijina plant- a root type plant containing vining like properties, which is infinitely easier to both harvest and work with than a pure vining plant. After discovering the pifleek hybrid, and seeing its properties, the Kaxod decided to continue creating the plant, and started purposefully crossbreeding the plant; sometime experimenting and seeing if they could add other plants for more variety or stonger properties.

In the center of the valley was a tiny Grove of trees. They were carefully thinned out to make room for their central building. As a sign of respect for the trees, and the region, when saplings reached a healthy size, the Kaxod moved and replanted them elsewhere in the region where they wouldn’t be in the way, but also would have enough space to grow to full size without worry.

Animals

Because the Kaxod were farmers, they did not want other creatures to get into their food supplies and storage. For this problem, like the zu’aan of the Toras used to do before they were changed, they kept ‘catcher’ type animals for the various critters of the region. One ‘catcher’ species was a cat like creature, similar in size to a Russel Terrier, called a Coffer. The ‘coffer’ name came from the fact that the species tended to have genetic problems with their vocal cords as they aged; so over time their chirps strained the throat to the point they could only make loud coughing or hacking noises.

Like the akiribi of the Toras, they are hyper-sensitive to movement and vibrations in the ground to aid in their hunting. They have two sets of claws; one nonretractable for digging, and one pair that is retractable that extends over the stationary set. The secondary set is used if they need to quickly latch on to prey in burrows or climb up trees. Unlike cats, they have a longer snout more similar to foxes- thinner in width than dog like snouts, but still just as long. With an extra tough skull, this allows coffers to hunt using the ‘pouncing’ method where they drive their head into the ground.

(Ler’ther has soft enough soil they can do this without injury) to catch their prey underground quickly. If that fails, then they’ll move on to a digging and snagging or chasing method. Ler’ther also has nearly all the same animals as the Toras does, being that they are in extremely close proximity. The escaped farm creature species cross the borders between the regions from time to time, though they often get hunted by a zu’aan tribe wondering through before they actually ever reach the peaks of the hills bordering the region.

Especially the same between the regions are the ‘critters’; including the mudanashee. Coffers will hunt mudanashees in their burrows, and eat them. But often need to hunt other creatures or be fed by the Kaxod in addition, as Mudanashees provide them little to no nutritional value to their breed specifically. Another critter species in both regions is the sola. The Sola is a rodent like creature, from nose to tail about the length of a hand (base of the palm to the fingertips).

A distinctive feature of the solas is their hind legs, which they use to propel themselves to extreme heights considering their size- about 7 feet high from a still sitting position. A single Solas, if not kept in check, has the capacity to eat through an entire barrel (36 gallons or about 136 liters) in a day and a half. They have a metabolism that is about 50x faster than an average zu’aan and have been known to destroy entire fields in less than a week if there’s a population boom.

The Akiribi in the Toras keep them in check as one of their main food sources; in Ler’ther, a mix of ‘catcher’ animals and other carnivorous species keep the population low. Especially the wondering Vaarai, who happen to pass through right around the time the Sola’s young start to leave their burrows- which happens to fall about 2 weeks before the Vaarai reach their mating grounds.
