Geography
Lazese Verdant Sands is a mostly flat region that appears to be mostly desolate at a glance. The regions outer areas are indeed completely empty and devoid of life besides the local cactuses. The flat desert stretches on for miles in all directions until you reach the massive crater known to the local Tailye kin’toni clan as Ashakan. This massive crater is not far from Dusky Shallows and is often used as a landmark to tell Tailye members which direction to travel to reach the oasis. The crater is the result of an ancient zu’aan atomic weapon that likely misfired or was targeted incorrectly.
The crater is several kilometres wide and several hundred metres deep. It is almost invisible in the surrounding landscape unless you walk right up to it. At the bottom of the crater is a small pool of water. Some foolish kin’toni have attempted to drink this water whilst dying of thirst. They quickly discovered that the water was tarnished with radiation, as well as most of the crater itself. Ashakan has been known for mutating local wildlife that attempt to get to the water. A few kilometres north of Ashakan is the sacred oasis of Lazese, Dusky Shallows.
Dusky shallows is a section of verdant land that is found hidden behind large sand hills in the centre of Lazese Verdant Sands. The oasis spans only around five square kilometres and is relatively small for the life that it holds. The oasis has formed around a natural water spring that comes from a small hill in the centre of Dusky Shallows. This hill is just formed out of rock and hardened sand that has risen above the surface due to the pressure applied by the water. This hill is simply referred to by the local kin’toni as ‘the fountain’. The water is spread out into the oasis in small streams.
All around greenery sprouts up near this water to cover almost every inch of Dusky Shallows. Dusky Shallows got its name because of the shallow water streams and the fact that the sandy hills that surround it cast large shadows over the oasis. This makes it seem as though its always dusk inside the hills. In the Dusky Shallows there are to separate areas of civilised construction. One is the original zu’aan settlement of Eternost. This is a small village of wooden buildings that is used to house the zu’aan labourers. It can house around one hundred people but is used to store less than that for the moment.
This village also has its own well and church building. The church has now been repurposed as a storage facility. Near to Eternost is the town that the Tailye kin’toni clan has built for themselves to live in. This town is larger than Eternost and is unnamed as of now. Here there are several large sheds that are used to protect food from the severe heat of the day. They also have a special building dedicated to their leader.
Plants
The plant life in Lazese Verdant Sands is mostly based inside Dusky Shallows as there is plenty of water and nutritious soil. There are some species of hardy cactus that are able to survive in the open desert, however. The steams in Dusky Shadows allow for plants that would normally not be able to survive in a such a hot environment to grow at incredible rates. The conditions are almost perfect for plant growth and have results in a variety of unique plants.
Lazese Cactus
Lazese Cactus are a species of cactus that are native and unique to Lazese Verdant Sands. These cactus are very resistant to the hot climate due to their hardened outer shells. These outer shells are brown in colour and appear wrinkled on the outside, making the plant appear as though it is dried out and dead. The outer shells are also lined with long spines that will detach onto anything that is stabbed by them. The spines are not poisonous, but their length is what makes them dangerous. They are able to be pierce all the way through a kin’toni arm or leg if positioned properly.
Lazese cactuses can land extremely long without a single drop of water due to their low dietary needs and well adapted water storage abilities. Water droplets can last several weeks inside the body of a Lazese Cactus. These plants can be found almost anywhere in the desert but cannot be found inside Dusky Shallows. These cactus can grow to heights of up to four metres tall.
Arbio
Arbio are a species of aquatic plant that are native and unique to Lazese Verdant Sands. These plants grow in the water streams produced by fountain within Dusky Shallows. They can vary in size but are mostly around the size of a kin’toni head. They are round plants that are attached to the bottom of the stream by a thin bunch of roots. The circular part of the plants floats and bobs in the water constantly. The main part of the plant is red with green flecks. Inside the round part is nothing but air and some Arbio seeds. When the plant is ready to die it pops its main body and releases the seeds into the stream. They flow down it and begin to grow further along.
Haraniu
Haraniu are a species of berry plant that are native and unique to Lazese Verdant Sands. These plants grow only in Dusky Shallows. They are completely green except for their tiny berries which are black. Each plant grows several large bunches of its berries which are only around the size of a small kin’toni fingernail. These berries are very nutritious to the local zu’aan tribe as well as the local wildlife. These berries can also be used to make juice and medicines. Haraniu medicines are able to sooth headaches and sore stomachs.
These trees are plentiful throughout the oasis so there is plenty of berries to use. These plants generally only grow to heights of one metre or less.
Animals
Lazese Verdant Sands is home to a wide variety of native wildlife. Most of the local animals live inside the Dusky Shallows oasis but there are some that have managed to survive beyond the safety of this oasis. Even in the oasis however, there climate is still extremely hot so the animals in Lazese have had to adapt to this over time.
Yarels
Yarels are a species of desert roaming insect that are native and unique to Lazese Verdant Sands. These insects do not live inside the Dusky Shallows oasis but do sometimes drop by. Yarels are long and thin insects with short but fast-moving legs. They have six of these legs and they propel them forward with incredible speed. The legs skit through the sand and make the yarel appear as though it is sliding along the sand. The local Tailye kin’toni clan refer to this process as ‘sand skating’. These insects have brown bodies and do not have wings.
Their heads are a darker shade of brown and contain a circular mouthpiece that they can extend outwards to feed. They roam the desert in Lazese looking for cactuses to feed off. When they find one, they simply crawl between the gaps in the spines until they can find a weak spot in the armoured outer casing. They then insert their small mouthpiece into this gap and withdraw as much moisture as they can. Often Yarels will feed on several cactuses each day.
Matinos
Matinos are a species of flightless bird that are native and unique to Lazese Verdant Sands. These birds live only inside the boundaries of the Dusky Shallows oasis. Matinos grow to be around half a metre in height. They do have small wings, although they are mostly useless. Their feathers are white all over and their beaks are a bright orange. They feed on the grass and other vegetation that grows inside the oasis. They can run quite fast when they need to which makes them annoying to catch for the local zu’aan tribe. The zu’aan still need to eat and they often try to catch fatter matinos.
The local Tailye kin’toni clan often help them chase down the birds for a bit of fun.
Arachen
Arachen are a species of reptile that are native and unique to Lazese Verdant Sands. They have grey scales and long but thick bodies. They are the largest animals in Lazese but are usually very harmless. They live only inside the Dusky Shallows oasis where they feed on greenery and berries. They can grow to lengths of up to three metres long. Their mouths can open very wide and sometimes they just consume plants whole. They have blunted teeth designed for chewing plants, but their jaws are very powerful and can cause damage to a kin’toni or zu’aan that threatens them.
They usually stick to themselves beneath the undergrowth. They like to stay near the water streams inside Dusky Shallows so they don’t have to go far to get a drink.
