Kel'ony Kin'toni Clan
History
As the Kel’ony kin’toni clan mirgrated south, away from the ice shelves that threatened to wipe them from existence, they stumbled into Ilshlia Boreal Highland. Since they had been wandering with no set destination in mind, they decided that they would make their home within the highland. Seeing that no one else was settling there, and that they weren't too close to any other kin’toni settlements, the leaders of the clan decided that this should be a good place to contain the criminal kin’toni that made up their clan. Many of the criminals decided that they would make their homes high up in the trees, wanting to have a vantage point on the leaders, who were also guards.
They thought that because their homes were up high, that they would essentially have the high ground, and that they wouldn't have to listen to the guards. This was true in many aspects, as the guards gave them more free reign since they didn't want to have to deal with the criminals. The Kel’ony clan were a fairly desolate clan. Since they were made up of mostly criminals, members of other clans that had been banished because of the crimes that they had decided to commit, many of the members were angry with their circumstances.
They had been taken away from what they had enjoyed doing, and this made them act out. They would take their anger out on each other, and the guards felt the need to break them up as they didn't want to have to deal with the criminals killing each other for something as simple as not being able to control their own temper. Essentially, the guards who were there to watch over the criminals, and keep them alive, had also been banished from their clans, having been the weakest or “dumbest” members of the clan. They were stronger than many of the criminals, since they came from stronger clans.
But had been sent to watch over the various criminals because of not being able to pass certain tests to do other jobs. Everyone, criminals included, were not welcome back in their clans, forced to live their lives in isolation. No other clans would take them in as they were either marked as the criminals they were, or they were widely known to be untrustworthy. As time went on, the criminals began branching out to reach their former contacts, trying to reform their business contacts, and the guards didn't seem to notice. To them, they assumed that the criminals were trying to reform themselves, but little did they know what was going on behind the scenes.
The criminals grew their empire under the nose of the guards, and were proud of what they had accomplished. They were able to secure enough supplies to go back into business, and were able to keep it from being found out. This is how they built their new clan, and they were proud of it.
Psychology
Because of the Kel’ony kin’toni clan being comprised mainly of criminals, there was always tension within the clan. There were almost always fights breaking out as they would have near constant differences of opinion, and that would cause them to start fighting. Many of them were hotheaded and would assume that the best way to resolve any and all disagreements would be to lay hands on each other. They would fight until a guard, or even a group of other criminals would peel them off of each other. While there were supposed to be rules against fighting, many of the criminals were used to fighting to get their way, and they weren't about to change that now.
Eventually, the criminals had essentially split into two different gangs, going with the one that held more of their beliefs so that they felt like a respected member of their gang. Of course, there were a few criminals that would instead choose to be alone, feeling like they wouldn't fit in within either of the gangs, and instead would make their way on their own. Because of this, the two gangs felt threatened, not understanding why the stranglers didn't want to join sides with them. Many of the most dangerous criminals had learned that they could use scare tactics to get what they wanted.
They knew because they were bigger than most of the others, that they essentially would either be the muscle of the group, or they would be the leaders of their gangs. Both gangs would use a pack mentality against the other, knowing that there was always strength in numbers, and using that to their advantage if they could. As time went on, it was apparent that the guards had chosen the Ilshlia Boreal Highland because of how far it was from other kin’toni, and it wasn't as close to any zu’aan either. This angered the kin’toni of the Kel’ony clan.
They didn't like that they couldn't access the resources that they needed, and eventually they started sending out members without the guards' knowledge. They figured out where the closest zu’aan villages were for blood, and then they figured out where the nearest kin’toni clans had settled so that they could hopefully settle into partnerships with them to get what they needed. While many other clans knew who they were and refused them any sort of service, there were some members that wished to help them, entering into contracts secretly and offering services to them behind the backs of their clans as they believed they should help.
Anyone else within the clan, who wasn't aware of anything going on behind the scenes, was kept in the dark about it so that they could ensure that the guards didn't find out. There was a lot of secrecy within the Kel’ony kin’toni clan, and that was exactly how the criminals liked it. They liked that they were able to deceive the guards and could continue with the lifestyle that they had led before the Shattering, and before they were thrust out of their old clans.
Biology
The Kel’ony kin’toni clan, being composed mainly of criminals, and other kin’toni that had been banished, the clan was an entire hodgepodge of difference. Many of the criminals had scars on their bodies from fighting, kidnappings, or anything else they had gotten themselves into. While there were some that had less scars than others, they all had at least one. The scars varied in shade depending on how long they had been on their bodies, and what they had done to recieve them. Many were from fighting, whereas others were from weapons.
As well as that, each of the different members held different eye colors. The only thing that really tied them together as a clan was that they had a unique marking, allowing anyone to know that they were criminals with just a glance. This mark, situated beneath their eyes, was a tattoo of either a blue, or a red dot under each of their eyes. The red dots symbolized the criminals, and the blue symbolized the guards. Each had earned their dots the same day that they were banished. Before they were sent on their way, they were held down and marked so that any other kin’toni would know that they were criminals and to stay away from them.
These marks were made with an ink that stained many layers of their skin, so no matter how hard they tried, they were unable to remove the mark. Some of the criminals had tried to remove the marks, using various means to do so. Although none of them had been successful, their efforts did land them with more scars, more identifying marks, and some had even been blinded by trying. This only caused them to be even more easily identified, and ensured that some of them wouldn't be able to see any longer, when the outcome could have been easily avoided.
Some of them had even taken to using scars almost like their own tattoos to mark their skin so that they could tell that they were from the same gang. Since the Kel’ony clan was composed of so many different clans that came together as one, each of the kin’toni that made up the clan was different. They all had various heights, weights, eye colors, hair colors, and facial features, making them entirely unique from the others. The guards were the same way, as they had also come from various different clans. While the guards didn't have as many scars or marks as the criminals did, their larger stature did allow them to be more easily identified from the criminals.
Because of the variety in their body types, many of the Kel’ony clan would use their uniqueness to their advantage, allowing for them to accomplish things that others within the clan couldn't. They would band together with others of similar body types to complete tasks. The clan members that did so were usually from the same gangs that they had created amongst themselves.
Culture
While most of the members of the Kel’ony kin’toni clan had come from different clans initially, many of them seemed to have at least one thing in common with someone else that had come from a different clan. This was usually something as simple as a celebration, holiday, or even a practice they did on their birthday. This helped many of the members get to know each other after they had separated into their gangs. As well as this, they had come up with some other practices that they would implement over the years, giving them some traditions amongst themselves that they genuinely enjoyed.
A lot of the time they would sit down within their gangs and they would gamble with what little supplies they had. Other times, they would have tournaments with the other gang, or with the guards, and since they had so much fun doing this, it quickly became a monthly tradition. Gambling also served as a way for them to acquire other things that they needed that they wouldn't have been able to get ahold of without stealing. Overall, the kin’toni of the Kel’ony clan rarely used their manners. They would say vulgar things, directing them at each other, and they rarely apologized for it.
They thought that it was funny, calling each other names and laughing in each other's faces about it. As well, many of them would be physical with others, using force to take what they wanted, and little to never thanking them for it. They didn't believe that they should have to be nice since they were criminals. It was believed by many that they had no plans to ever truly “get better”, many of them choosing instead to more closely follow the path that they initially took that caused them to be banished in the first place. Although now, they knew that they wouldn't be banished from this clan.
Oftentimes, they would hold a fight night. This would take place at least once a month, and allowed each gang to put up their strongest member so that they could reign supreme. Before the strongest gang members would go up against each other, they would fight amongst themselves to determine just who was the strongest. Once it was established, they would have a quick break before the strongest members would go up against each other. While this was happening, the guards would keep watch, making sure the fights were as fair as possible before announcing the winner.
Usually, these fights would go until the other member would tap out, or to the death. The guards didn't like when they would end up killing each other, so they always did their best to end the fight before it got that far. As well as the fight club, the criminals would use their fists and their fights to resolve any and all issues that they had within their gangs. They would also use the same tactics against rival gang members, and against the guards if they felt that they needed to.
Government
Since the Kel’ony kin’toni clan was made up of criminals, they didn't have what one would consider “traditional laws. The guards had tried to come up with some in hopes that the gangs would abide by them, but they were scoffed at, and many of the criminals would openly break the laws, knowing that not much else would be done to them. The criminals were essentially given free reign of Ilshlia Boreal Highland, to do as they pleased there. Since they were so far away from any other kin’toni as well as the zu’aan, there wasn't a lot that they could do.
The gang members didn't like this, and so they went ahead and sent members from their clans to try and make more business deals so that they could continue their dealings. They managed to do this under the nose of the guards, ensuring that only the most trusted members knew so that they wouldn't be found out. Each of the different gangs had created their own laws and rules that they were required to follow, and anyone that didn't would be subjected to various punishments that were set at the leaders discretion. Each of the gangs did appoint a leader, or various leaders so that there was always someone that they could count on to lead the gangs and uphold the laws.
The guards themselves also had their own laws. As previously mentioned, they tried to hold laws for everyone to follow, but this was in vain as the criminals didn't seem to care about any rules or laws that they didn't create. Eventually, it seemed as though the two gangs were running the clan, and even the guards would follow their laws when in their presence. This made the gang leaders happy knowing that they made the rules and that their so called guards would listen to them. They would make the guards jump through hoops for them and would create fake laws just to make the guards follow them.
And made sure that the guards never truly knew which were real, and which were fake. It was widely known that the guards held no true power over the criminals. That they were only there so that the criminals couldn't escape and re immerse themselves back into other clans. This was only good as long as the criminals believed they couldn't just leave, and this wasn't hard for the guards to achieve as the criminals did truly believe that no one else would take them in. Aside from the criminals that were able to escape and make contacts with other clans, many of them didn't want anything to do with the criminals.
Knowing not only that they shouldn't be trusted, but that they were apt to be scammed, or entirely ripped off in their business deals because the criminals rarely upheld their ends of contracts. Instead they would enter into contracts and then proceed to steal from the other clans, enjoying that they were rarely sought after, since their clan was so far away, and many other clans didn't want to trek that far just to recover some stolen goods.
Military
Within the Kel’ony kin’toni clan, there are the aforementioned gangs, as well as the guards. Aside from these groups, there weren't any other specific groups. Within each of the gangs, there were people who held specific jobs. Some would be the ones that were sent to travel in hopes that they would find members of other clans that were willing to work with them. Once it was established which clans would offer help, the gang members would send their leaders, or second in command with some added “muscle” to perform the deals.
This muscle that they would send usually ensured that they were able to make any deals, and would also serve to make it easier for the criminals to steal anything that they wanted. While the guards tried to uphold standard laws, they themselves also felt no need to appoint an army as they knew many of the other clans didn't want to side with or against criminals that wouldn't follow any rules. They knew that should anyone try and attack them, that the two gangs of criminals would band together to keep their village safe. Since there was the fight club, the guards felt the need to keep weapons accessible, in case there ever was a need for them.
While usually the gangs would distance themselves, there would occasionally come a time when they would seek each other out, usually late at night, and they would fight. The guards had learned to anticipate this, and while the fights would take place, they would mobilize to stop it if anything got too out of hand. The guards had to ensure that they kept up on their training and fighting techniques so that they could break up any fights, or at least be able to subdue any of the criminals should the need arise. Many of the guards would spend their days training, going on runs, and sparring with each other.
Both with and without their weapons, so that they were always in top shape and able to take on anything, or anyone, that was thrown at them. They never seemed to back down from a challenge, and some could often be seen sparring with criminals as a way to keep up on their training. The criminals as well would spend hours lifting weights and training to fight each other at the fight nights. Although many of them would rely on their fists, some would train with weapons so that they could ensure they would have the upper hand, and they liked it that way.
As some of the were smaller in stature than the others, they would always make sure that they were equipped with weapons so that if or when their fists weren't enough, that they wouldn't lose any of the fights that they would partake in.
Religion
While there were so many diverse members within the Kel’ony kin’toni clan, there weren't many religions that were practiced on a regular basis. Since the criminals were often left alone, the leaders of the gangs assumed that they were untouchable, and would have their members worship them like they were gods. They would have them kissing their knuckles before speaking, bowing down to them, and they would take any female kin’toni they wanted as a “prize” of sorts. They would claim that in doing so, they were helping them learn to better worship them.
The guards believed that they were forsaken by a higher power. That right from being born, then to the infection, that they were doomed to watch over criminals for the rest of their days. They believed that they were intentionally born small so that they would fail the tests within their original clans, and thus would be banished to the Kel’ony clan to watch over the criminals. Because of this, many would pray day in and day out for something to change. They would beg and plead for whatever being was listening to change their fate.
Many of them hated the job that they had, and they knew they would do anything to change it. They wanted their freedom back, their families, and their friends that they weren't able to see anymore. Some of the guards would leave out offerings in hopes that it was good enough for their higher power to take mercy on them and grant them a new life. This wasn't usually the case, and the guards that didn't believe in the higher power would make fun of them, laughing at their attempts to change their lives and they would try and explain that they wouldn't be here if they had trained harder, pushed themselves more, that maybe they wouldn't be where they were.
The criminals would usually join in on making fun of the guards that were praying to get away from them, enjoying how it boosted their egos. Although, some of the stragglers that were genuinely trying to reform their ways would pray to have their lives taken, or changed as they had realized the mistakes that they had made, and they understood that they were wrong. They would meet as a small group, there only being maybe a dozen of them, and they would pray together and talk about how they had messed up and wished to change it. They would spend hours in secret spilling everything and doing what they could to change themselves.
While they would do this, they would present ideas on how they could change more in terms of their behaviour, and if any of the members wished to confess anything wrong that they had done in the time prior to their meeting, they had the chance to without being made fun of, or prosecuted for it. They would have the chance to admit it and face a small punishment, as opposed to if they lied, or were caught doing something wrong. In that case they would be forced to partake in harsher punishments until they learned.
