Kalor Kin'toni Clan
History
When the Shattering happened, the Kalor kin’toni clan was strong in numbers. They had many plans and ideas as to how they were going to build their civilization and live in the place they had found. As they moved into Yryna Old Coniferous Forest, they found that they were farther away from the zu’aan than they had initially intended. Because of the distance between the Kalor kin’toni Clan and the zu’aan, there was a lack of blood supply that was available to them. This caused many of the kin’toni to turn to sucking the blood of their companions, causing diseases and mutations to spread through their clan.
These diseases caused their speech to devolve, rendering it almost incommunicable between clans, for only the Kalor kin’toni Clan could understand it. Some of the diseases also made the kin’toni excrete, a substance akin to blood from various orifices such as their eyes, nose, and corner of their mouths. Other diseases would cause the kin’toni to hallucinate. Some of the mutations that this caused were bulging eyes, deformed faces, and different length limbs. As time passed, the Kalor kin’toni Clan continued to devolve because of them continuing to drink the blood of their clan mates, causing them to become less civilized, and more barbaric.
As this happened, they began to lose focus on evolving, and instead would wander the land aimlessly in search of more zu’aan. Although sometimes, what they thought were zu’aan, were instead just fallen trees, bushes, or even other kin’toni. The more the Kalor kin’toni clan devolved, the more broken down their villages became as they forgot to update them, or fix them as needed. Their mutations and diseases only grew further, and the few that were left, that decided not to drink the blood of their peers were more threatened now. With so few left, they barred themselves away from the rest of their clan in hopes to ward them off from trying to drink their blood.
Eventually this plan failed as the infected kin’toni started to break through the walls that the uninfected put up, and began to pick them off one by one. Without the technology to create any type of for the diseases, the final uninfected kin’toni were infected. As this happened, the clan crumbled, reduced to the most basic form of a clan. They all recognized each other, and on a primitive level, understood that they were different from other kin’toni that they came across. Their communication continued to dwindle, reduced to grunts and mumblings that only they seemed to understand.
While they were more barbaric than most other kin’toni, they managed to hold onto their pack mentality, still hunting in packs, although they were usually hunting each other. They would form packs amongst themselves and hunt each other, causing large fights where only the strongest and “smartest” would walk away from the fight, their stomachs full of their clan mates blood, causing more mutations and diseases in a never ending cycle.
Psychology
The Kalor kin’toni clan has become essentially primitive and uninviting. They have been reduced to nothing more than what could be best described as “cave people”. They have been left without their own government for so long that they act on their own whims without consequence. They have been reduced to a basic pack mentality, acting on primitive urges as they are unable to properly function as a community. Because of their devolution, the Kalor kin’toni clan has been reduced to the most primitive ways. Their communication has dwindled, becoming something that only the clan themselves can understand.
Any and all reliable kin’toni have been infected by drinking the blood of other kin’toni, leaving their government nonexistent, their society in ruins since there isn’t anyone left to run it. As their society and mentality crumbled, many of the kin’toni began neglecting their basic needs, such as their personal hygiene, many of them forgetting to bathe, or even wipe after using the bathroom. This caused rot to set into their limbs, some reduced to only one limb left, others left with more, but unable to use them as they’re falling off or still in the process of rotting.
The smell coming from this has attracted other further devolved kin’toni to flock to them, wanting to devour the rotting limb. Since the government is nonexistent, the Kalor kin’toni clan has not been able to charter any trade relationships with any other clans. This caused them to be a fairly closed off clan, unable to create or keep any partnerships amongst themselves or with other clans. They had no trade partnerships, so there would be no imports or exports which only further isolate their clan from everyone.
While there are still some more “civilized” kin’toni here, many of them have given up hoping for anything better and have resigned to devolve with their peers, working against what you could call their better judgement to hunt down their own pack members for food, and occasionally for fun, since they didn’t have anything better to do. While there were small packs that would form while hunting each other, many of the kin’toni would wander alone aimlessly, mumbling to themselves to pass the time.
Biology
Due to their devolution, the Kalor kin’toni clan has become severely deformed. They lack communication skills because of this. Their tongues have become misshapen as their form of communication has turned more into grunts, growls, or any sound that emanates from the throat or lower in their bodies. Since the Kalor kin’toni clan has begun drinking the blood of their clan mates, they have developed multiple mutations. Most of these mutations are visible to the eye, and they include bulging eyes, varying lengths of limbs, and deformed skin in the form of lumps, rashes, and rot.
While not every kin’toni within this clan has the same mutations, some have developed certain mutations by way of not paying attention to their surroundings, and others have earned them by way of fighting other kin’toni. Each of these mutations causes different strengths and weaknesses for their respective hosts, making it easier for some to hunt others, and for others to be able to fight back or evade their hunters.
While the Kalor kin’toni clan was a strong race, able to lift and carry things with little to no other help, once they began to devolve, their strength depleted, causing many of them to seek help with any type of task before they devolved further, and now they must hunt in packs to ensure their kills come easily for them. Some of these kin’toni have learned to use their mutations and deformities to their advantage, gaining the upper hand when it comes to hunting. Appearance wise, before the mutations set in, the Kalor kin’toni clan was a beautiful race.
They had eyes that were a beautiful bright red towards the edge of their irises, with more of a golden yellow towards the edge of the pupils. As mutations set in, the colors bled into each other, causing marbling within the iris. Each pattern was different, allowing unique patterns to emerge. Facially, the Kalor kin’toni clan used to have fairly pointy chins and noses, a feature that could easily set them apart from other kin’toni in the area. As they evolved, even before mutation, some faces would end up more round, and their features less prominent.
Once the mutations became prevalent, their faces became misshapen and bumpy, many of them losing their eyesight as lumps formed around and within their eyes. Each kin’toni has unique bumps and lumps, setting them apart from their clan mates.
Culture
Before devolution struck the Kalor kin’toni clan had many cultural practices. They had practices for marriage, “holidays”, as well as various rituals for different events. Each of these was highly prevalent within their society, paving the way for each of the practices to evolve into what should’ve become something that they could share with other clans. Instead of having their rituals evolve, the Kalor kin’toni clan devolved. Their rituals soon lost from their minds as their lives spiraled into chaos, and mindless hunting. Marriage was once a beautiful tradition, widely celebrated by each of the clan members.
Usually everyone that was able to come to a marriage, did come, witnessing the union of two people in love. Usually at these marriage ceremonies, while the ceremony itself would be quite traditional, there was one thing that set it apart. At the end of the ceremony, the groom would take flowers that he had found, bringing them to decorate the bride's dress, signifying their union. After the groom finished decorating her dress, the bride would take the flower crown off of her head and place it on the grooms, thus decorating him as he did her.
Many of the kin’toni would celebrate the day that they were infected as though it was their birthday. While some would choose to celebrate quietly with their close friends and family, others would gather to participate in small parties. At said parties, participants would partake in a hunt, following the plan of the person who was celebrating their birthday, so that they would be the one in charge of where they would hunt and how many zu’aan they would chase. In addition to their birth days, some of the kin’toni of the Kalor clan would choose to change zu’aan that they caught, into kin’toni as well.
In doing so, the newest members of the clan would participate in “initiation” at the request of existing members, and the kin’toni that chose to change them. Since changing zu’aan into kin’toni was rare, the newly changed member would be asked to complete a ritual to prove that they were worthy of being a part of the clan. Usually this would consist of the newest member catching their first zu’aan and drinking their blood, proving that they intend to participate within the clan. Sometimes initiation would consist of “camping” on zu’aan land to see how long it would take for them to be noticed and scared away.
Depending on how long the camping would last, would determine how high within their society they would be. Some of the kin’toni would participate in something akin to “holidays. Days they would gather with their friends and spend quality time together. Some of these so-called holidays would consist of more hunting, gifts being exchanged between people, or couples deciding to go off on their own for some quality time together. While not every citizen would participate, many of these holidays were widely known within the Kalor kin’toni clan.
After the devolution of the clan, no one participated in these cultural practices anymore, their minds more focused on consuming more and more blood, and not caring where it was coming from.
Government
At one point, the Kalor kin’toni clan had a strong democratic government. They had many laws in place that kept their clan safe, as well as protected from any dangers they might face from the zu’aan. The Kalor kin’toni clan focused their efforts on ensuring that their people always had a say in what happened around them. As there were officials appointed, the Kalor clan ensured that laws and rules were followed by each and every member. These laws eventually caused a ripple in the clan, as some members didn't like what was agreed upon.
They had decided that since they were so far away from any zu’aan, that they would break the laws and hunt more often, taking the food supply away from their clan mates, and becoming greedy with their bloodlust. After a while of searching, despite the best efforts of the law, many kin’toni chose to feast on their companions, beginning the onset of the diseases. As more and more kin’toni became infected, they began to care less and less about the laws that were in place. They became savage for blood and would do anything that they could to get it.
The remaining officials had tried to barre themselves away from their infected clan mates to no avail, eventually succumbing to the disease themselves, and thus their government crumbled. The diseases caused the kin’toni to forget their humanity, and thus forget their laws. Once each member of the Kalor clan was infected, there was no longer any government to speak of. There was no one to create and uphold laws, so everything crumbled. Partnerships that were once prominent had fallen through. Other clans who had noticed the spreading infection either moved away from them or would fight them off so that they couldn't infect anyone but themselves.
They left the Kalor clan to wander amongst themselves.
Military
Much like the government, the Kalor kin’toni clan used to have a strong military aspect. There were many soldiers in their small army as each member who could fight would join. This grew their army slowly, making it as strong as it could be. Since they were such a small clan, their army made up at least three quarters of their population. The rest were left to tend to other things around the village. As a form of weapon, the Kalor kin’toni clan used the trees and rocks around them to their advantage, crafting spears and shields out of them. This allowed them to fight better, and not have to fight in such close contact if they did.
As they evolved, they managed to create armour as well, giving them an added form of protection. While there were so many trained soldiers within the Kalor clan, the clan themselves were fairly docile. They didn’t feel the need to fight unless otherwise provoked, or unless they were to make an alliance with another, or many other clans to fight for a specific purpose. They always believed that conflict could be resolved by any other means aside from fighting about it. As a result of this, many other clans sought out the Kalor clan for their expertise when it came to resolving conflict.
A trait that they hadn’t been able to use amongst themselves. Thus when the devolution began, they were unable to resolve their inner conflicts, and their society crumbled. Once the infection spread through many of their members, the army decided to fight back against their own, using their weapons and armour as a means to have the upper hand. Eventually this failed as there were more infected than there were soldiers. The infected would team up against the uninfected and they would overtake them, thus infecting more and more clan members with ease.
After a while all that was left was scattered weapons, and now some of the infected use these weapons to secure meals, the last semblance of their military that is left.
Religion
Within the Kalor kin’toni clan, religion hadn’t been much of a topic of conversation in the early days. As the kin’toni wandered, they had been undecided if there was a greater being that had cursed them, or if they were just existing. Because of this, there were no major religious affiliations among them. Some of the Kalor clan decided that they believed that there was at least something that controlled their lives, and they turned it into a religion amongst themselves. Some even went as far as writing out some basic “rules” that each member of their group had to follow.
In doing this, their religion turned more into a cult than anything else. Some other members of the clan were fearful of them, going out of their way to avoid them at all costs. Some of the members of this cult believed that their rules put them above the law, and this caused many riots and fights among the citizens. Eventually the government was no longer able to control the members of this cult, and it resulted in them being essentially overthrown by them. The government took a back burner to any proceedings done by the cult, and this caused citizens themselves to revolt and attack.
They felt that if this cult was allowed to have full free reign, then they were allowed to attack the cult members when they were least expecting it. The cult members believed that this infection that had made them into kin’toni, had chosen them for some sort of greater purpose, thus making them bigger, better, and stronger than the zu’aan. While many other kin’toni tried to explain to them that this wasn’t the case, they wouldn’t believe them, instead choosing to believe that they were untouchable, when this couldn’t be farther from the truth.
The Kalor kin’toni clan never had a chance to share their religious practices with other clans as they had begun to devolve before they had reached anyone else. Their numbers within their religion had dwindled as the diseases had spread through their clan mates. They would pray to some unknown being, asking for them to be granted mercy so they could follow through with their plans, but to no avail. Eventually they too were infected, and since then, occasionally you can hear them mumbling and grumbling about their cult, cursing the god they had created for themselves.
