Geography

The Homicado region was known for its distinctively flat terrain which was covered in brackish water that from the neighboring sea- forming a large marsh that covered the entire region. The region was formed as a result of seismic activity that led to the inward collapse of its plate and a lowering of the region's elevation. The region remained vulnerable to sudden seismic activity that would continue to occur at random periods. The water levels in the Homicado region were dictated by the ebb and flow of the tides. In high tides, the waters could reach up to ten feet, while at lower tides, the levels would remain at chest-height.

The vegetation of the region was also adapted to survive in these watery conditions. Most of the trees were raised above the surface of the water with the help of their exposed roots while other smaller vegetation like reeds and grasses stuck to the shallower parts, where they grew in large clumps. These large bodies of plants were buoyant on water and could form large floatable platforms that were inhabited by some zu'aan clans. The mangrove like trees were also harvested to build raised wooden platforms that stood on elongated poles rising out of the water's surface.

This style of architecture became common in the region before the kin'toni outbreak in the second era. After the outbreak, the region began to see the influx of many kin'toni hordes who easily raided these raised settlements in the absence of proper defensive walls and structures. During this period, most of the surviving zu'aan would turn to a nomadic way of life as a defensive mechanism against the kin'toni hordes. This would lead to the predominance of rafts, reed platforms and homemade boats as the premier form of transport and housing in the region.

The Homicado was also home to a wide variety of aquatic life that provided the zu'aan with a reliable and constant supply of food and other animal products. The region had a warm and tropical climate, with regular rainfall and a high level of humidity. These conditions were perfect for the tropical vegetation and animals of the region. The region experienced three seasons in a year- summer, monsoon and winter. In summers, the temperature could rise to the mid-thirties and the humidity would be at an all-time high.

The region received high levels of sunlight at this time of the year. In monsoon, the temperatures would drop a little and was distinguishable by the constant rainfall that would fall in the region. The waters would rise by several inches and the treetops would be lively with all sorts of activities as the animals enjoyed the respite from the heat. The clogged and muddy section of the marshes would open up and help transportation and movement by boats or rafts. In winter, the temperatures would fall to the mid-twenties and the rainfall would slowly begin to cease.

The humidity would fall to more tolerable levels during this time of the year and the region would regularly be covered in fog in the mornings.

Plants

The Homicado's vegetation mainly comprised of tropical marshland vegetation that could tolerate the warm and humid conditions of the region along with the variable water levels that could rise to over ten feet in the deepest sections of the marshes. The vegetation was vital for the wide variety of wildlife that depended on it either for shelter, sustenance or for the raw materials that it provided. The regions permanently inundated surface made it impossible to grow most kind of crops and food was mainly derived from the fruit bearing trees of the region.

The wood of these trees was also vital for the construction of many kinds of zu'aan structures that were built atop wooden poles. The region was also home to many varieties of buoyant weeds and grass surfaces that could easily double as rafts or platforms for the zu'aan. Some of the most prominent vegetation of the region included the hint and dra'rano trees that were very similar to mangrove trees and only differed in their size and colors, the angun reeds were another specialty of the region along with the cahot weed that grew in the neighboring seas of the region and would be brought into the region by the tidal action of the surrounding waters.

The hint was the most common variety of tree in the region. It had distinctive exposed roots that were raised above the surface of the water, allowing the trees to breathe. These roots also served as protective havens where fishes could come to lay their eggs in relative safety away from the influence of the raging sea waters. It could grow to a height of over ten meters and had small reddish leaves that formed a thick top layer on the branches of the trees. The hint produced a fruit that was similar to a date plant and was an important part of the native's diet.

The thin and light wood that it produced was also used in many of the clan's construction activities and was known for its reliability and water-resistant qualities. The dra'rano tree was very similar to the hint but was taller-growing to a maximum height of over fifteen feet. It also had vastly differing leaves that were yellowish-green in color and produced no fruits. The tall and sturdy stem of this tree was used to construct the poles that the structures of the zu'aan were built on.

The angun reeds were commonly found in the shallower sections of the marshes. They grew in tightly grouped clumps that were capable of floating on the surface of the marsh. They were stable enough to support the weight of the zu'aan and their camps. The cahot weed were aquatic plants that grew in the sea floor of the surrounding seas of the region. They were almost black in color and would be brought into the region along with the high tide.

They were reliable sources of food and had high nutritional values that made them a staple diet of many zu'aan tribes along with the animals of the Homicado.

Animals

The animals of the Homicado region were a mix of amphibious marsh dwellers, aquatic animals that lived in the surrounding seas of the Homicado region and a variety of tree-dwelling animals and birds. These animals had to be able to survive in the hot and humid as well as watery conditions of the region. This meant lesser fur and sometimes rubbery textured skin that could resist water. Animals played a vital role for the survival of the zu'aan tribes of the region due the difficulty of conducting agriculture in this part of the world.

The most famous types of animals in the region included the bryche- an amphibious reptile that preyed on both the animals as well the occasional zu'aan, the veryk-ine- a marsh dwelling water buffalo, the essm- a saltwater fish that lived in the surrounding seas and would swim into the marshes during its breeding season, the nysingi- a carnivorous bird that preyed on the smaller animals of the Homicado region. The bryche was a large oversized reptile that could grow to a length of over ten feet.

It resembled a komodo dragon and could live underneath the waters of the marsh as well as on land. It had webbed feet that ended in sharp claws- allowing it to attack and cause grievous injuries to its prey. It had a hard, scaly skin that could resist light scrapes and cuts and was instrumental as a defensive weapon to ward off the damage of its foes. It had a very versatile diet that included the local wildlife as well as the plants that grew around the marshes. It was hunted by the zu'aan for its light golden skin that could be woven into armor or used as artifacts.

They were very dangerous since a hunter had to get very close in order to reliable penetrate their scaly skin with arrows. The veryk-ine was a marsh dwelling wild buffalo that fed on the reeds and plants that grew on the shallower parts of the marshes. It was equipped with two very sharp horns that were capable of goring its adversaries. It was a common source of meat as well as bones and hide for the local zu'aan and their culture immortalized these creatures in their tree paintings.

The veryk-ine had very wild instincts and could not be tamed or domesticated. Thus, they were never used as cattle by the populations of the region. The essm was a species of fish that lived in swarms along the waters of the neighboring seas. They could be observed in large numbers during their breeding seasons when they would head into the marshes in order to lay their eggs in the safety of the mangrove roots. They were a delicacy among the zu'aan who would dry and preserve them for future use.

The nysingi was a common predatory bird of the Homicado region that was very similar to a large eagle. Its wingspan could stretch for over four feet, allowing it to glide smoothly in the higher altitudes while it picked out its prey. It also allowed it to generate massive lift with every flap of its wings that helped it carry off all kinds of prey that it captured with its large talons.
