Geography
The Enthran Dark Grove is small, only covering an area of around 14,230 square kilometers. Its name comes from the mix of dark soil, dark trees, and dark colored flowers that grow there. There are less than a handful of plants that have bright colors. Despite the look, Enthran has soil rich in nutrients capable of supporting a wide range of plant life. The grove supports a wide variety of mainly fruits, trees, flowers, and a small handful of nuts. It is a grove that has grown mostly natural and unchecked, with a few zu’aan additions. Over the years, zu’aan that have settled in the region have brought plants from their travels. The soil was able to support the new plants, allowing them to grow and reproduce.
The trees that surround and are wishing the grove are around seventy feet high and some of the biggest ones are about twenty feet wide. Some of the trees have fallen over or are slightly tilted. A mix of branches, leaves, foliage, and shrubbery hide the grove from the outside. Within this barrier of protection, the grove itself is open and takes up about 8,000 square kilometers of the region. Plants in the grove rarely grow over four feet tall, leaving the trees scattered throughout as the tallest. As one goes further from the grove, the trees become denser and more plentiful. By the edges of the region, it’s pretty much a thick stretch of dense woods. Plants with bright colors start to appear.
There’s a river, Po’da, that separates Enthran from the Ineing Springs, the region to its south. There are also a few small ponds scattered outside of the grove. The biggest is only around fifteen feet wide and three feet deep. There are no animals that live in the pond, but there are a few insects that lay their eggs on the edges. The animal population is mostly made up of small mammals, birds, and pollinating insects. It’s not uncommon to see a few larger mammals outside of the grove, on the outer plains of the region Enthran has a moderate climate that supports the plant life of the grove. It averages temperatures between the high sixties and low seventies in the warm months, and the low forties and upper fifties in the cold months.
Daytime and nighttime temperatures can vary by a few degrees. The region can experience extremely cold periods in the winter, but they don’t last long. Rainfall is a common occurrence nearly year round, while snow is extremely rare. Rain can drop up to eighty inches per year. There are high winds and cool breezes that can easily spread pollen and seeds. The Turer tribe live in dirt huts in the southern part of the grove. This part of the grove is a bit bare of plants and full of soft dirt, allowing them to manipulate the area a bit better. They also chose this part of the grove due to the secret entrances they had made. Their huts are fairly close together and only have enough foliage covering them to keep the rain seeping through the dirt.
As the pond water is somewhat polluted, they use the river as their main water source.
Plants
Despite its appearance, the Enthran Dark Grove supports a wide range of plant life. Not only does it support plant life, the plants there are thriving. There are very few bright colors in the grove. With this being said, there are more towards the outer edges, but these are mostly spilling over from the surrounding regions. Most of the plant life here is native to the region.
Treklos are a species of fruit shrub native to the region. They grow to about four feet tall. They have lots of long, flexible, straight stems with delicate, rigid, black bark that covers gray wood. Their branches are covered with large, thin, dark blue leaves with rounded edges. The fruit that the shrub produces grows all year round.
They are broad and flat, with crispy, tough, dark green skin that covers a crunchy yellow flesh. They have a sour taste to them without the skin, but a sweet and sour taste with it. There is a small, flat seed in the middle. They grow in bundles of four, and there are usually twelve to fifteen bundles per shrub. Small, star-shaped, black blossoms with narrow petals grow in the summer along with the fruit. Every part of the fruit is edible, along with the summer blossoms, the leaves, and the stems of the shrub. Treklos can be found all over the region. Eshroil is a unique flower native to the region. They can grow up to three feet tall. Their dark blue stems are thin and split into about two dozen branching stems about a quarter of the way up.
Medium-sized, black, pleated leaves with tattered edges grow along the entire length of the stem. Around four to seven flowers grow on alternate sides of the stems. The flowers are about a foot wide. In the winter, the flower head is tube-shaped with four tightly layered, narrow, oval-shaped petals that come in shades of dark red and dark purple. The flower head opens up in the summer, revealing a bright yellow center. It is one of the few plants with a bright color. While a beautiful flower, eshroil is more unique for its medicinal benefits than its appearance. Nearly every part of the flower has some kind of benefit. The petals can be made into a paste to help treat wounds and keep them from getting infected.
The roots can be steeped and used to treat fevers. The leaves can be used as wrapping for wounds to help speed up the healing process. The stems can be eaten raw to treat nausea. Hedil are a species of tree native to the region. They can grow up to almost seventy feet. Their slightly curved, narrow trunks have knobby, rough, dark purple bark that covers black wood. They have a large amount of thin branches that trail along the ground and are covered with thick bunches of long, narrow, dark red leaves with tattered edges. The leaves are nearly six feet long, but barely half a foot wide. The roots are thin, but grow in a large web that stretches for several feet. They grow fairly close to each other, and have the largest population of all of the trees.
There are small, edible, dark blue berries called aguaro that grow in the summer. They are diamond-shaped and grow in small bundles of twelve. They lose their leaves in the winter. Their leaves are also used as fire kindling. Hedil is mainly found in the center of the region, surrounding or within the grove.
Animals
The Enthran Dark Grove is home to a variety of birds, pollinating insects, small mammals, and a few larger mammals. Some are native, but a lot of them can be found in similar regions. Thanks to the abundant plant life, a majority of the animals are either herbivores or omnivores. There are less than two percent that are carnivorous. Arelope are small mammals that are usually found in areas of high vegetation. They are six legged, stand at a shoulder height of about one foot, and are nearly three feet long. Their thin skin is covered with short, dark blue fur. They have large, wide mouths with blunt teeth for the various plants they eat. They have large, round, yellow eyes with vertical, slitted pupils.
Their large, round ears are nearly twice the size of their round heads. They have short, stubby tails. Arelope mate twice a year with multiple partners throughout their life. Females can give birth to up to two young per mating. They live in nests made of branches and leaves on the ground. Arelope are very calm and curious creatures. They can often be found poking around the zu’aan, especially the Turer tribe with their docile natures. Kucing are a species of small bird native to the region. They grow to about eight inches and have a wingspan of almost two feet. Their smooth, thin skin is covered in thick feathers with diamond-shaped ends. Males have feathers that come in an iridescent combination of red, blue, and purple, while females are just red and blue.
Their beaks are wide and short, but strong enough to crush bone. They are one of the few carnivores in the region. Their eyes are wide and pale blue, with circular pupils. With their poor sight, they rely on sound to get around and escape danger. To impress the one they wish to partner with for life, they showcase their wings behind their heads. Females choose the one with the prettiest wings. Kucing mates once every two years, with females laying around four to five eggs per successful mating. They can be aggressive when defending their young and their nests which they build as high up as they can get.
Ostmite are a rare species of pollinating insect native to the region. They grow to about seven inches and have two sets of thin, narrow, blue iridescent wings. Their elongated heads have two stumpy antennae. Two large, black eyes bulge out of their heads and give them a great range of vision. They have eight thin, hairy, silvery blue legs. There are short, dark purple hairs covering their rough skin. Their mouth is similar to a suction cup, and it allows them to eat nectar. Ostmite mate with different partners throughout their life once every three years, and females can lay up to a hundred eggs per successful. They only come out during the warm months. Despite their ability to swarm, ostmite are docile and will often fly away when anything gets near them.
