Geography

There is not a plain in Earr Knoll longer than a few dozen meters, each way one looks there are only hills of different sizes and shapes. This makes construction quite difficult, as it needs to be or on top of a hill or in a valley, either way, there is not a lot of space. The Elak clan has used metal of the first Era in order to build a settlement right on top of a hill. Whereas other smaller clans have their tribes in between hills. However, this means that the terrain presents a perfect opportunity that the kin'toni have taken advantage of, the high ground and the cover that the hills provide.

Trees are another key characteristic of the region, dark pink edaar trees, almost white pink drealr trees and white sheaar trees are the most common types and many of them are chopped, year after year, for gathering timber. With timber the smaller clans can build gates pikes and walls as a defense against potential invaders. Earr Knoll has so much access to wood that all of the houses outside the settlement are build with it, which makes them blend into the background on sunny autumn days.

The kin'toni of this area are master woodworkers. Although there is an enormous number of trees and flowers of many shapes and sizes, like the “Noumena”, a yellow flower that slightly changes color according to the temperature, the kin'toni did not plant anything else. Their need of food is only partial and, therefore, it is not their main concern. They harvest what they can from nature, but do not wish to spend resources farming on the sides of hills, a very tiering task.

Excavating the set of tunnels below the hills has taken many hundreds of kin’tonis and several generations, it serves as the crowning achievement of the Elak clan. The danger of the tunnels caving in on themselves is minimized by the wooden structures they insert inside the tunnels themselves. However, this work is not yet done, the region is not entirely connected by tunnels yet, many more years is what it will take for the Elak to see their plans come to fruition. Despite the composition of the land being an almost perfect protection in itself, the summer presents itself as the most difficult time for the kin'toni clans in the region.

Around the second week of summer, the fires start. The enormous amounts of limber in the hills are an incredible fuel for the flames and fires ravage the region until the last week of summer. The kin’tonis are aware of this as they dig trenches and over many kilometres, nevertheless, the access to a water source is not easy and rare are the days where enough can be gathered to have a real impact. There are times in which many houses and individuals fall prey to the flames. Fortunately, in early October the temperatures decrease and the rain starts to pour and it puts out the remaining fires.

Plants

The vegetation in Earr knoll varies immensely from season to season, the only constant are the trees that range from one meter to fourteen meters at the most. The kin'toni plan their harvest specifically for each time of the year. Although agriculture is not a concern of the Elak clan, there are still naturally growing vegetables and things of the sort, which is why there is a periodic harvest. In the spring, what grows the most is hidden in the ground and a lot of effort is required in order to find what is growing. This is usually work for the least important members of the kin'toni, they walk around looking at the ground for hours trying to find something.

The spring harvest is not only in order to gather supplies. It is also considered a punishment for those who fail to contribute to the development of the tribe in any other way. When the summer arrives, flowers start blooming even in the most unusual of places, Nindae for example, a flower that received its name in the honor of an old kin'toni strategist who died in the clan wars, only grows on top of other flowers. It can be used to make a color that is part green, part brown. The colors of the Nindae are used as a symbol of peace within Earr Knoll, disrespecting them can lead to banishment.

Any harvest that happens around this time is, unlike in the spring, a very sought-after activity and is only attributed to those who show promise in their ways. Autumn and winter are the times of the hunt, the days are shorter and sunlight is reduced to seven hours a day, which provides great opportunity for the kin'toni. However, this means that no attention is paid to the harvest in these seasons and much of the knowledge that could be attained by learning to take advantage of certain roots or leaves is lost. In recent years, near the borders of Earr knoll, a handful of kin'toni have found a seed that smells of blood.

Its taste does not quench any desires that a kin'toni may have, but its smell is powerful enough to trick the senses for a short while. Although that is the only use of this seed for now, many are hard at work to see in what way this can be used as an advantage. In fear of a wildfire with a magnitude that would wipe out the entire forest, the kin'toni have started using the tunnels as storage for seeds and plants, this way, even if everything else is destroyed, there is a possibility of regrowing all that previously existed in the land. The last fire that threatened wiping out everything in its path was the great fire of 3E 21.

In the middle of the war, when Earr Knoll was still Earr Laia and the zu'aan had been fighting against the kin'toni, there was a day in which the kin'toni were resting after a long battle during the night. They were surprised by flames entering their outposts, almost as if they intended to, and killing many without hesitation. The kin'toni never forgot that day.

Animals

In the first Era, this region was home to various farms that belonged to the most important men and women of the empire. One could not walk without spotting a cow, a horse or a sheep. However, this rapidly changed and during the wars most of the animals were killed, not only for food and pelts, but also as collateral damage. In the couple of centuries that followed, the number of animals has been steadily increasing and new animals are coming to Earr Knoll in an attempt to escape wars in other regions closer to the sea, despite this increase in numbers and species it is still nowhere near what it was in the old days.

Breeding has become a rather usual practice for the kin'toni. It is something that they have learned to perfect since they first exercised control over this land. It started because there were very few of the attack dogs left of those that the commanders of the empire had, and the ones that stayed alive were weak and frail. Over decades, the kin'toni would pick the strongest, fastest and the most agile to breed. Now the dogs have grown to be a bit larger than a usual dog, their torsos are strong as a tree trunk, their legs are as agile as a sword and quick as a whip.

These attack dogs are often sent out if there is a sighting of someone in the area, they are well-trained and impeccable killing machines. Horses are the other animal that the kin'toni have bred. There are enough of them for every single person in the tribes of Earr Knoll. Specially bred horses are assigned to the generals and high-ranking officials of the Elak clan, they can ride for days without resting and only a handful of them exist. One animal the kin'toni have tried to tame and breed is the bear, but in spite of the innumerous attempts, this animal has not yet let himself be tamed.

Nevertheless, the majority of the animals is out in the wild purposely for hunting or in cattle pens near the tribes. Near these pens, there are large containers made from metal above which the already dead animals are hung. This way, the blood falls, drop by drop, in these containers. Afterwards, they are taken to the tunnels and are stored there for safe keeping. This blood is not something the kin'toni desire like they do the zu'aan blood. However, when reserves are low, they resort to drinking this type of blood, even if the effects are nonexistent, it still gives them a taste of what they crave.
