Geography

The Darot Monsoon Jungle is usually dry and humid all year long. The jungle receives ample rainfall each year, though inconsistently. However, the early months of each year will see a long couple of weeks of rain that has contributed to a number of geographical wonders of the jungle. This climate had encouraged the growth of a lush jungle, a rich terrain and even richer biodiversity. One of the prominent landmarks in this jungle is the lime rock formation that was used to determine the finding of a new land when King Ea’wa and the early settlers of Darot came by.

These lime rock formation towers just a shy of a hundred feet tall and was covered in vine and other sorts of plants. This unique formation is believed to have formed by the rainfall over this land for a long period of time. There are also a fair share of mountain and hills in this area as Darot shares the same mountain range as the Fibodian Tropical Mountain. Many theorised that the tallest mountain in the region – Mount Dal-divudum is well over seven furlongs in height. The mountain host a plethora of species of flora and fauna unique to the region and some of the animals in the mountain is yet to be discovered.

With an intricate mountainous range come underground caves and Darot has a lot of them. One of the unique cave in Darot is the Zul’krak cave which has an underground river. Multiple convoy had been sent to study the geography of the cave as it was believed that the underground river opens up to the other side of the mountain that it is on. This theory was heavily guarded a secret during the reign of King Ea’wa. One convoy recorded that after a certain distance travelling along the river, one would hear a subtly crashing noise of what seemed to be a waterfall.

For years many thought that it was too dangerous to carry on further as they thought that the river would end up to an underground waterfall and into the abyss. However, during the reign of King Ea’wa II, his majesty was determined and was optimistic of the theory that the river opens up to the other side of the mountain. To test this theory, several canoes were commissioned for use for the underground cave. Guards would tie oneself with a rope while travelling along the river. They would then be held by guards travelling in a boat behind them.

This interval or pattern would then repeat until one would near either the supposedly underground waterfall or supposedly other side of the mountain. To his majesty’s delight, when reaching the edge of the waterfall, they have discovered that it opens up behind a huge waterfall that flows in what was believed as uncharted land of the Fibodian Kingdom. To this date, the then recognised as Fib’dar passageway is kept as a heavily guarded secret by the royal household as well as the guards who have sworn to life to keep it a secret.

During the monsoon season, it would rain for a couple of weeks causing a flood in a basin that would otherwise be the side of a pocket of a hill most of the year. There are only a couple of places that is able to charter this phenomenon in Darot those basins are called the Dakar and the Gul’dak basins. This mesmerising phenomenon is enjoyed by the royals and commoners alike each year as a sign for good blessing. In actuality, when it rains continuously for a couple of weeks, the rainwater is unable to be displaces due to the lack of waterways to the outside of the basins.

So for a whole month, a clear freshwater lake is formed that will eventually seep into the soil and small crevasses on the side of the hill save for a small pond that’s left on the bottom of the basin.

Plants

Darot boast a vastly diverse ecosystem due to its inviting climate. One of the most prominent trees that’s unique in the region is the madta tree. The madta tree like the average height of the trees in Darot can grow up to a couple of hundreds of feet tall. It has tripartite leaves and is not a fruiting tree. The madta tree secretes a type of sticky sap that is when processed, made into various luxurious items including bed, seats and pillows for the royal. This is because the sticky sap when processed is bouncy and is very comfortable to be seated, laid and rested on.

Another unique feature of this tree is its means of dispersions of its seeds. When matured, the seeds within the pods would burst out, spreading the seeds to a far distance. The toidon is a type of vine that’s found in Darot. It has a large cordate or heart-shaped leaves. It blooms of red, blue and yellow flower and is a beauty to be seen especially when it fully blooms. Toidons are usually found hanging onto trees and side of cliffs and attract many insects such as the tompu’. These tompu’ helps pollinate this flower while it feeds on its nectar.

Mundoks are a common plant that’s found across the kingdom, including the Darotian jungle. This plants is edible and is usually meshed and eaten as a staple food in Fibod, Lorche and Darot. Mundoks in Darot are larger in comparison that the other parts of the kingdom however. Mundoks have lean stems that’s usually brittle and easily breakable. Many zu’aan over the kingdom use the mundok to its fullest. If they don’t wish to replant the stem, they will use it as firewood while its roots are dug out and eaten and its leaves could be boiled and be cooked into a meal to compliment a dish or as a dish in itself.

Punthi is another common plant in the kingdom including Darot. Punthi are fruiting trees that would grow up to a few feet tall. Typically, punthi would fruit once in every half a year. Once it fruits, the tree will then die. The large soft bark that is usually used for compose after the punthi is reaped. The leaves of punthi are commonly used in dishes but not as an ingredient. Instead as wrappers to smoke or roast meat. Its bright yellow fruit is irrestible to kara, zu’aan and kin’toni for that matter, withal.

Nag’ko for one, is exclusively found in Darot – at least initially. Nag’ko could grow up to a few feet tall – typicall around ten to twenty feet in height. It is a fruiting tree which fruit is extremely sweet. When ripped, the fruit will produce a strong sweet smell. Early Darotians considered it such a delicacy that they were reluctant to have those living in Fibod to plant it there. However, as time goes by, this plant can be found in certain parts of Fibod and Iriorn. Nag’ko weighing competition is a thing in the kingdom.

It was said that whoever had the heaviest Nag’ko would have huge blessing from Nuh. The heaviest nag’ko ever recorded was as heavy as an adolescence bakas which is roughly around 15 stones in weght.

Animals

Tom’ning was the first animal to be recorded in Darot. Tom’ning is a type of feline that could stand on two of its four legs. An adult tom’ning can grow up to 10 feet in length and weight around 5 stones on average. This makes them agile creatures and make them light-footed which is perfect in hunting. They are commonly seen hunting in packs and when they do hunt, they surround their prey from all sides. What the tom’ning would do is that they will all march from one side before dividing themselves in groups of 3 from 4 main sides of their prey.

This tactic interestingly enough was then adopted in the Fibodian kingdom’s army manoeuvre which is also called the tom’ning for obvious reasons. Kanyang are animals that is commonly found in Darot. Crowned kanyang is exclusively live and breed in Darot while other species of kanyang can be found in Fibod as well. Kanyang are typically black in colour while their heads is decorated with, depending on species, either yellow stripes, crown or cross. Kanyang are generally big birds where an adult on average would easily be half a zu’aan’s height in weight.

They feed on fruits, berries and sometimes even specific flowers. Laja-sada is a type of bird that is always a beauty to look at. The palm-sized bird’s main attraction however is its fishing capabilities. Laja-sada would perch up on low-laying branches near the river bank or even drifted woods to see if any of the fish comes up to breath. When they do, the laja-sada would glide not an armlength of distance from the surface of the water and swoop the fish in its mouth. This tactic is believed to be done so that the bird is not seen from the viewpoint of the fish.

However, as agile and sly as these birds are, if they fail to swoop the fish properly and fall into the water instead, it would mean the end of them unless they’re able to perch up on any nearby drift wood or any sort of elevation. Tonku-tan is commonly found in Southern Lorche up to Eastern Darot. These crustaceans are naturally brown in colour but to camouflage itself, it’s able to rub itself with mud to blend in with the soil. These crustaceans is flat and walks on all 10 of its legs.

To the untrained eye it would look like a fallen leaf. When threatened these little beings would “age” itself or have its shell hardened by pumping out a hardener protein to its shell. This process will wear off as the protein is washed off. Their usual diet of strictly fallen fruits is believed to be the reason of as to why they are extremely tasty. Tonku-tan were initially everywhere but after much hunting, their numbers have been reduced. It was therefore to the monarchy’s interest to limit the hunting of these crustaceans.

Over the years, tonku-tan have been farmed in zu’aan-made ponds though as far as taste goes, nothing beats the naturally-grown tonku-tan’s taste.
