Geography
Cleshyusk Snowy Evergreen is treacherous to travel across, and the almost impenetrable surroundings make it easy to become lost. There are many steep hills and deep caverns which can be disguised behind a wall of green plant life. The Ximeen have 2 major settlements throughout Cleshyusk. Both of these settlements have been constructed on the banks of major rivers that run through the forest. There are two major rivers in Cleshyusk, The Crimson and the Ernest. The Crimson is the largest and the deepest river and is known to contain many large underwater creatures that can often prey on the locals.
The Crimson runs past the central village, Crimson Falls, and ends towards the edge of the forest where it meets with The Ernest, and forms a small lake around the Ximeen village of Arkanst. Arkanst is built on a island in the middle of the lake, and is a popular location for the strongest Ximeen warriors to test their strength against the monsters that dwell beneath the water. Both villages are only accessible via tunnels that have been cut through the dense undergrowth. These tunnels need to be maintained regularly to keep the fast growing plants at bay.
'The passage to paradise' leads from the edge of the evergreen directly to Crimson Falls, the name comes from the Ximeen belief that they will go to paradise when they die. The landscape of Cleshyusk is full of hidden ravines and crevices that are covered by the undergrowth. The local Ximeen have used these to create death pits for their enemies to drop into and make sure no tunnels run over any of them. Recently the Ximeen discovered a series of underwater caverns beneath the Arkanst lake that lead to the remnants of an ancient zu'aan civilisation. Here the Ximeen have found carvings, and writings of technologies that they do not fully understand.
They also discovered plants growing in these caverns which can be used to temporarily expand the lung capacity of a kin'toni when eaten, allowing them to remain underwater for longer. The Ximeen have explored as much of these caverns as they can, but some of the deeper caverns are so deep that none of the Ximeen kin'toni can remain underwater long enough to explore them. Once the Ximeen can fully translate the secrets of these ancient carvings, they believe that they can use this knowledge to create weapons of war that will increase their strength and reputation throughout the continent.
Plants
Cleshyusk Snowy Evergreen has quite a cold climate, but has plenty of sunlight and water to sustain plant growth. The evergreen is mostly populated by tall Tamate trees, which form the dense canopy that protects most of the forest from the snow above. Beneath the Tamate, are vast amounts of ferns and vines as well as Tamate saplings. They combine to make it very difficult to travel through. The banks of the Crimson and the Ernest have sprouted many weird and unique forms of plants due to the purity of their water.
Araguire euktam
Araguire euktam are the Cleshyusk native and unique species of river fern. These ferns grow larger than the other species located in the Snowy Evergreen, and are a much darker shade of green. The ferns only grow along the banks of the two major rivers, The Crimson and The Ernest. These plants are used by the local Ximeen kin'toni clan as a means of travel food when they are off on raids afar. The leaves of the fern can last weeks without rotting or losing colour. While leaves may not taste good, they are very nutritious, great for soldiers.
The Ximeen are all for practicality over comfort, so the ferns suit their needs. However, gathering these ferns can often prove dangerous. On land in Cleshyusk, there are minimal predators, it is in the water where the carnivores of this region live. The ferns are quite large and often spread out overtop of the waterways, concealing anything potentially lying beneath, and making it risky for a harvester to go out over the water to get the best branches.
Zuli bistakcorta
Zuli bistakcorta were discovered in the lost caverns the local Ximeen kin'toni tribe discovered beneath the Arkanst lake. These plants contain a special chemical that expands the lungs and airways of any user who consumes them for a limited time. This allows someone who has eaten a Zuli bistakcorta to hold their breath for longer, or breathe safely in atmospheres with lower levels of oxygen, such as high altitudes. Each plant has between 3-5 bubbles that grow off of the plants roots which are usually found attached to the walls of the lost caverns. Consuming a bubble will grant the affects to the user for around 5 minutes. Kin'toni who have weaker or stronger lungs naturally will be affected differently. For example, a kin'toni with weaker lungs may only gain the affects for 3 minutes.
Tamate Trees
Tamate trees are very tall, evergreen trees that make up the large majority of the Cleshyusk Snowy Evergreen's canopy. Several of the oldest and largest tamate trees can be located within and around the Ximeen clan's Crimson Falls. The Ximeen kin'toni have manipulated the growth of these trees and their offspring to create a series of natural defences out of the thick trunks and roots of these tamate trees. These evergreen trees generally catch most of the snow that comes down from the Chal Mountains and have thus earnt Cleshyusk its name.
Animals
The majority of the native animals in Cleshyusk are herbivores that are mostly harmless to the local Ximeen kin'toni. The lush forest is easily able to sustain these animals because most of them are small, as larger animals would not be able to move around the dense undergrowth. The largest creatures, and most fearsome predators are found in the waterways.
Kintaki
Kintaki are small mammals that have the ability to glide using large flaps of skin that run along the sides of their bodies. Kintaki can come in varying colours but most are green or brown to blend in with the forest. They have four small legs equipped with 4 clawed fingers, designed for climbing up trees. They feed on leaves and berries and live near the tops of the tamate trees. The local Ximeen kin'toni tribe often hunt them for food when they come down to the ground to forage for food.
Earaki
Earaki are massive water-dwelling creatures that feed on the roots of trees. Earaki have a large tusk on their upper jaw that is used to pry roots away from the trees that grow along the riverbanks. This tusk can also be used in self-defence against predators or kin'toni who threaten them. Earaki have wide oval heads, and long sleek bodies lined with glittering blue scales. Their mouths are quite small compared to their heads, and contain rows of blunt teeth suited to eating thick roots. Earaki travel alone, but are generally safe from most underwater predators due their size and tusks.
The largest of their species ever recorded by the Ximeen kin'toni clan was estimated to be over 20 metres long. Earaki are occasionally hunted by the Ximeen clan as their scales can be used to make armour, and they large bodies can provide a lot of food. However, due to their sheer size it is often difficult to move them once killed. Therefore the kin'toni only prey on the younger and smaller earaki.
Vorcan
Vorcan are the apex predators in Cleshyusk. Vorcan are gigantic serpents that predominantly live beneath the surface of the rivers. Vorcan are jet black and usually only hunt at night to best camouflage themselves. During the day they cower deep underwater, commonly in the lost caverns. Vorcan's eyesight is limited, and they rely on their keen sense of underwater hearing to allow them to track and kill prey. Their deadliest aspect is their uncanny ability to mimic sounds that they hear. Their enhanced hearing allows them to hear mating or distress calls given out by other creatures from very far away.
The Vorcan then mimic these sounds to draw in their prey. Occasionally, vorcan emerge onto land. There are many horror stories about vorcan who have mimicked kin'toni speech to draw in unsuspecting locals. Often the vorcan would mimic the voice of the victim it had just killed to lure in his or her friends. The smaller vorcan are often hunted by Ximeen soldiers to prove their strength to the other clan members. The largest vorcan ever seen are estimated to be between 12-15 metres in length. However, some of the Ximeen kin'toni cavern explorers believe one even larger vorcan lives deep with the lost caverns.
This particular vorcan has never been seen but has been heard by the divers, mimicking what was likely its last victim. The divers reported screams of suffering and recount the prayers said in that poor souls last moments. This marks the victim out as a kin'toni or perhaps a zu'aan that belonged the lost civilisation that once inhabited the caverns. The Ximeen named this vorcan 'The Screamer'. The Screamer has never killed a Ximeen kin'toni which leads them to believe this particular vorcan has not fed on any intelligent life for some time, and means only to scare them away from what lies deeper within the caverns.
