Historical Overview

Chal Wintry Mountains is a cold region located in the northern part of the Taerel continent. This region is most well-known for the large expanse of snow-covered mountains that cover most of its surface. These mountains range in size and height, the tallest, Mount Teiron being located in the centre of the region. The mountains make the region very cold and mostly unpassable.

Geography

Chal Wintry Mountains is a large mountainous region that is located in the northern part of the Taerel continent. Like most regions in this part of Taerel, Chal is very cold and the days are much shorter and the nights much longer. This makes for harsh living on the surface. The local Onnala kin’toni clan as well as some of the local wildlife have adapted to live underground where it is warmer and more sheltered. The mountains vary in size but remain mostly impassable for any untrained explorer. There are many hidden cliffs, ravines and snow-covered traps lying in wait for any unsuspecting travellers.

There are some areas that are covered in dense mountain forest formed from hardy conifers. The region’s largest mountain, Mount Teiron, is well known for its towering peak which flattens into a large platform thousands of metres above the surface. This flat peak is known to the local Onnala kin’toni clan as Arotrax. It is a sacred site for their people and is also one of the entrances into their large network of tunnels that are most prevalent in this mountain particularly. The Onnala kin’toni clan originally settled in the caves in Mount Teiron.

Here they worked the tunnels for many years until they had carved out a suitable home for their people. They live mostly in communal areas forged out of the once hard rock. They have many fires within the mountains and the smoke is filtered out through pipes. They have crude sleeping places and most of their time is spent making the forges. The forges are the large areas inside the mountain that are dedicated to the research and construction of new weapons and armour for the clan. Here they experiment with new minerals to test their worth. They also forge their infamous bronze armour and weapons here.

The Onnala tunnel network spreads further than Mount Teiron and many entrances can be found in nearby mountains or event at ground level. These entrances can often be used as bait for unwary travellers. Piles of gold and gems are often left at the entrances of the Onnala caves to entice wanderers deeper into the caves or to bait them into a waiting ambush. This is how many new Onnala kin’toni are turned. The tunnel network connects to the main forges at Mount Teiron via underground passageways that lead beneath surface level rock. This means the Onnala must descend several thousand metres from their stronghold on Teiron in order to traverse to other mountains or entrances.

There are several small rivers that run through Chal Wintry Mountain. The largest of them all is known to the local Onnala kin’toni clan as ‘The Unfreezing River’. It is called this because it does not freeze all year round despite the bitter cold that can occur during the northern Taerel winters. It does not freeze because of the regular hot springs that run along its banks and feed it most of its water. The river also runs very fast which may be another reason it cannot freeze.

Plants

Chal Wintry Mountains is a very cold and harsh environment for plants to survive in. The only plant life that can survive here is very hardy and well adapted to the cooler climate. The region is not known for its edible plants and this is mostly because of the poisonous nature of many of the plants. There is also scarce water available in the winter months and the local plants have adapted in order to survive these times.

Ajakxes

Ajakxes are a species of spruce tree that are native and unique to Chal Wintry Mountains. These trees have black bark and even darker black wood. They do not grow particularly tall, but due to the lack of other large plants they tower over everything else in the region. Their leaves and small and dark green coloured. During the winter, the trees shed these leaves and go into hibernation. Their bark thickens and becomes darker. The trees winter transformation is one of the warning signs that winter is coming. The local Onnala kin’toni clan harvest hundreds of these trees and plant hundreds more every summer.

They use the hardy spruce wood to construct tools for their forges as well as use it for firewood.

Chal Wildflowers

Chal Wildflowers are a species of flowering plant that are native and unique to Chal Wintry Mountains. These plants grow along the snowy mountains in large groups. The flowers sprout from a central plant which is mostly underground. This is to protect the main body of the plant from frost, and also allow them to hibernate underground during the winter where the ground is covered over with snow and ice. Once the snow clears the Chal Wildflower plant extends its stems upwards toward the sunlight. These stems sprout beautiful flowers, which can be eaten by the local wildlife.

The flowers can appear in yellow, blue, red, and purple. The flowers help to make the countryside look incredible come springtime. The plant itself is light green, and beneath the ground it takes on a dark shade of brown.

Aramenos Weed

Aramenos Weed is a species of aquatic plant that are native and unique to Chal Wintry Mountains. This riverweed can be found in almost every river and stream in the region, especially the Unfreezing River. During the summer it multiplies in massive quantities. The weed is dark green, and the tips of its tendrils are black. It can survive in the cold water of Chal perfectly fine and provides food for many of the river creatures. The local Onnala kin’toni use this weed to entice fish into their traps. They Onnala kin’toni clan also uses the weed to tie their weapons together as well as make boats.

The weed generally grows on the riverbed, and to get to it the kin’toni often have to brave the freezing water. To spread its seeds the aramenos plants roots simply release small bunches of seeds into the river current. The current pushes the seeds down until they get caught on other pieces of riverweed or rocks.

Animals

The wildlife in Chal Wintry Mountains have had to adapt to the harsh conditions that the cold, mountainous region brings. The animals here usually hibernate during the cold winter months. Northern Taerel winters are not known to be kind to creatures caught out in the open. Some creatures have also moved into some of the tunnels along with the local Onnala kin’toni clan.

Kerosbar

Kerosbar are a species of fish that are native and unique to Chal Wintry Mountains. These fish are capable of surviving being frozen for several months on end. And this is exactly what they do during the winter. When the rivers start to freeze over when autumn arrives, the Kerosbar intentionally get themselves frozen. Their bodies and brains shutdown almost completely and their blood flow stops. When the ice melts the fish will drift for hours until their bodies begin to wake up. During this time, they are very vulnerable to attacks. The Onnala kin’toni specifically chose to brave the cold at this time in early spring to catch massive hauls of kerosbar.

These fish are bright silver and have several red fins running along their spines. They feed on the Aramenos Weed that can be found in the local rivers primarily but also sometimes prey on smaller fish.

Jamineo

Jamineo are a species of mammal that are native and unique to Chal Wintry Moutains. These animals are quite large and can grow to heights of up to two metres. They walk on all fours generally but can stand on two legs to reach the leaves that they feed on. Jamineo are covered in grey fur, which camouflages them during the winter, but makes them stand out during the summer. Jamineo are herbivores but they still have long claws on their front legs that they usually use to rip leaves or branches off of ajakxes Trees. These claws can also be used for self-defence.

They can take a kin’toni head clean off if enough force is applied. During the winter, these creatures hibernate in caves that are located around the region. Commonly these caves are found in Mount Teiron

Achivar

Achivar are a species of predatory reptile that are native and unique to Chal Wintry Moutains. These animals are the apex predators of the region and are not afraid to remind the local kin’toni of this fact. They walk on four legs and can grow to lengths of up to three metres. They are light green in colour and walk very low to the ground, making them hard to spot when the snows have melted. Like most reptiles the achivar need a few hours of sunbathing before they are ready to hunt. While it is foolish to try and attack an achivar during this time, the local Onnala kin’toni often use this period to venture out into the open.

The Achivar scales are too thick to penetrate with kin’toni weapons but generally they live away from the tunnel entrances. If the local kin’toni need to get into a Achivar section for whatever reason, they always come in the early morning or late at night.
