Geography
Since Bura was a frozen forest, there was ice constantly covering the land. The trees were tall and white, standing strong in the cold weather. Many of the trees were barren of leaves, instead brandishing long ice covered branches. However, trees with needles or other long lasting foliage on them had branches that were pulled down by the weight of the ice that covered them. Each time there was a new snow fall, the branches of the trees threatened to snap under the newfound weight of ice and snow. Their only solace being the few days of warmer weather that would come every couple of months.
This would melt much of the snow and ice, and would make it so that the trees were able to stand taller and less burdened under the weight of the snow. When there were warm days, bits of grass and other plants would show through the snow, enjoying the warmth of the sun and the heat of the breeze. Since these days didn’t happen often, the land wouldn’t melt much, and would be left only slightly less covered in ice than it had started as. Alongside the forest some valleys broke up the harsh chill of the land. Each valley varied in size, and some even had warmer patches of soil within them.
One valley in particular, the biggest, held a large hot spring within it, although it was surrounded by thorns and grass that was itchy for anything that was to touch it. Many animals were so drawn in by the allure of the warmth of the spring that they would walk through the grass and become endlessly itchy. This itch would take a long time to go away, and many animals would end up passing away from constantly itching their skin. So far, only the clans nearing this valley had figured out how to access it without becoming itchy as they had learned that their clothing kept them safe.
Because of these valleys with hot springs within them, there were various patches of land that were untouched by the snow and ice, allowing for plants to grow there despite the cold air surrounding them. This would attract animals there that would eat the plants and enjoy the small amount of warmth. These smaller animals would attract other larger animals as the larger animals were hungry and looking for their next meal. Each time there was a warmer day, where the sun shone brighter than the others, and there was more than enough light and bright beauty, the animals would take the chance to find large rocks so they could bask in the warmth and enjoy the day.
They knew they wouldn’t have long to enjoy the sun, so they did everything they could to enjoy it for as long as they could. Each warm stretch would last between two and four days, and it would end up being just warm enough that some snow and ice would melt, and flowers would bloom for those few days. Although once the days were cold once again, it would all go back to normal.
Plants
Because of how cold and barren the lands were, Bura Frozen Forest was devoid of much land. There were the trees there that would remain covered in snow and ice throughout the year. Aside from those, there were only a few other plants that grew there without the help of the Omine clan. One flower that grew there and blossomed once the weather was nice again, was a thick stemmed orange and white flower with blue spots on the petals. Locally, he was known as Infantium, and it was a flower that when eaten would cause psychedelic hallucinations.
These hallucinations would usually cause the being that digested it to pass away as it would make them perform dangerous activities. Many animals that would eat Infantium would start to shiver and shake and they would start to see the land as something that it wasn’t. They would think that they were walking normally when really they would be wandering near some cliffs in the surrounding areas. Eventually they would fall to their deaths, entirely unaware that the cliff had even been there in the first place. Other animals that had eaten it would end up thinking they were on fire and so they would drown themselves.
Some would think that their friends were their prey and they would try to hunt them down and eat them. Another plant that grew there was the tall itchy grass around the hot springs in the valleys. These springs were so warm that some of the area around them wasn’t covered in snow or ice. In these areas tall itchy grass would grow, almost as though it was shielding the hot spring from any animals that might want to use the water for themselves. This grass contained and itchy oil that once it came in contact with the skin, it would start itching so much that you couldn’t avoid it.
The itching would be so persistent that it made whoever was itchy scratch until they were bleeding and raw. And even then the itching would still persist. Because of this, many of the animals that had been in contact with the oil would either end up scratching until they passed away, or they would intentionally go and kill themselves so that they could end the itching. As soon as they figured out that the grass caused it itching, they would avoid it wherever they found it. The last plant that grew in the frozen forest was a small purple flower that dusted the bases of the trees.
As soon as the ice and snow melted back, these small flowers could be seen, and they added a decided beauty to the forest. When looking at them from afar, the small flowers looked like berries, and it would trick hungry animals into thinking it was food until they got close enough to tell that it wasn’t.
Animals
The animals that most frequented the forest were some large wolf like animals, as well as smaller ones that resembles bunnies. Each of these animals was resilient against the cold as they had thick coats and large paws that made getting traction on the snow easier. These things allowed for them to stay living in Bura Frozen Forest. The wolf like animals were called xena. They were large and lanky from living in the cold with a lack of food, but they had a thick black and brown coat that kept them warm against the cold. This coat had two different layers, there was the soft inner layer that kept their heat close to their bodies.
And there was the rugged outer layer, that kept the cold out and kept snow and ice away from their skin. The xena were smart animals, hunting in small packs so that they could maximize their chances of catching the prey they were hunting. These prey were called bi'aals, and they were very similar to rabbits bi'aals were small and fast. Covered in a bright white and light brown fur, they were able to hide well in the snow so that the xena couldn’t see them. They would try to hide perfectly still in the snow pacts, hoping that when the xena were looking for them, that they would pass them by because their eyesight wasn’t the best.
However, the bi'aals had a unique scent to them, allowing for the xena to track them down easily and chase them. While the bi'aals were quite fast, their speed usually ended up being their undoing. They would dart around so fast that they wouldn’t be able to see when they were about to run right into a xena and they would end up running right into their mouths.
Since the xena and the bi'aals were the only animals that would consistently frequent the frozen forest. There were birds that would fly above the forest and would rest there before they would continue on to other places.
As well, there were smaller animals that would come to eat the small purple flowers that sat at the base of the trees. While there were occasionally animals that would come to stay in the forest that would stay for a couple of months to see if they liked it, but ultimately, they would end up leaving to find a warmer place to make their home. Many of the other animals weren’t able to adapt to handle the cold damp weather, and thus would end up leaving. While they had stayed there, they would be hunted by the xena, or they would hunt the bi'aals for food, although they would usually find them tough and skinny, their meat providing little to no sustenance for them.
Each of the animals that would stay in the forest would live as best they could, ensuring that they would eat enough to sustain themselves, as well as ensuring that any offspring they had were able to live a bountiful life.
