Historical Overview

History by Age

Stone Age: Before 1E 0

Spreading over a wide array of fields and pastures, the Besusy Pastureland lay within the northern continental regions of Taerel, bordering south and west with the Caear Deciduous Forest. Here the zu'aan have grown their livestock and produced their crops, over millenia of harvesting and refining the precious, fertile soil that is abudant in this region. Early records indicate that this region is one of the oldest in permanent zu'aan recorded history, after the nomads came upon agriculture and decided upon staying in place. These fields, plain with slight valleys and some forestal ground here and there, mainly tame wood that helps the environment remain stable, are the perfect place for the creation of numerous, plentiful fields of crops, orchards, and farms dealing with animal husbandry and other products.

The existence of common wild livestock naturally found in the region made it an ideal place to breed and live with them, and so Besusy became one of the most long standing natural produce areas in all of Taerel, feeding and importing over to many, many foreign nations. The fertility of the local soil in spite of the relative lack of rivers is attributed to underground water reserves that flow in from a deep underground cave structure, laid bare many kilometers underneath the ground. These caves seem to loop, according to topographical scans made by researching zu'aan, and so they allowed for the development of natural currents much like we see in oceans, in a smaller scale.

It is theorized that this caused the water, deeply dense in nutrients and minerals, to create a natural resource flow that ended up feeding the soil in the surface over many years, causing it to be exceedingly fertile. Artifical reproductions of soil are believed to not reach the absolute purity of the soil in Besusy, simply due to the reason that is has been developed naturally over millenia and such a process cannot be so simply mimicked by science alone. The existence of other tech makes growing crops faster in certain artificial environments, of course, but the simple fact that Besusy soil is so fertile is truly an incredible feat of mother nature's.

Although the communities in Besusy have always been semi rural, there are plenty of existing research facilities, labs, a university as of the pre Awakening Age, and many private terrains and extravagant, pompous farms that were built long ago in the feudal ages of zu'aan recorded history. After the Awakening Age, zu'aan did not initially move into this place, as the multiple farms and expensive terrains were quickly ravaged by the kin'toni plague and the little zu'aan that survived fled through the continent looking for better chances of survival. Later on, when conflicts somewhat calmed down, however, the sheer value of the soil in Besusy.

Along with the fact that plenty of simple farming equipment still remained in the area, due the fact that zu'aan fled the place and kin'toni had little reason to ravage it then, was taken into account by small zu'aan communities, and the area was once again populated, and its remaining buildings put to use.

Geography

The Besusy Pasturelands are a vast array of fertile soil, ruined farms and manors, and remnants of the peak agricultural region of Taerel. As previously stated, the fertility of the soil here is attributed largely to the underground water system that carries a vast amount of minerals and nutrients and integrates them into the earth, thus creating a natural era spanning cycle that is almost impossible to reproduce artificially without spending similar amounts of time. It is a large area, spanning over the triple amount of ground as Caear does, a grand total of 12,304 square kilometers, a great expanse of land shaped roughly like a strip, much bigger in width than in length.

It is a very plain region with occasional hills, in a territorial formation that makes it perfect to consctruct farming focused facilties and create cultivating grounds, almost as if it were created artificially. The center of the region was mainly employed by zu'aan for the creation of crop fields and storage facilities, as well as small towns and research centers focused on specimen growth and cultivars. Most of the orchards are located to the south, near the sea, as the fruit trees grow better. This zone is the most dense in terms of manors and large mansions and properties dedicated to farming wealth and trading and exporting to the outside.

Many of the lands in the center of the region are not allowed to sell to the outside without passing through some of high offices in this region first, or were, before the kin'toni outbreak. Nowadays it holds the ruins of these manors and office centers, and is still known as the 'rich zone' of Besusy. There are many kinds of unique and ancient cultivars in this region, many of which survived the Awakening Age and still grow to this day. The presence of these fruit trees made this region very appealing to the runaway zu'aan. Up north is where most of the farming related industries and facilities are located, such as slaughterhouses and dairy farms. This region is particularly hilly and has a river passing through it, the Eeum, which is helpful for raising animals.

The natural hills in this region and the slight presence of wild grass, shrubs and some trees make it perfect for the open field creation of animals, and the local animal products were known in the region to be one of the most high quality in the continent. Remnants of these farms still remain, though all of the surviving animals were forced to turn into the wild. As they were raised to live outdoors and were used to being outside and eating natural grass, and due to the extreme lack of predatorial life in this region, it was not a problem for them to survive after the Awakening Age. The fact that the fences of the zu'aan remained, and the animals, used to being within them, generally saw no profit in escaping, this is once again an extremely valuable region for the hungry survivors of the apocalypse.

Plants

There are a number of cultivars that grow only in Besusy, due to the high level efforts of the regional agronomical sector. Here are some examples that have survived the Awakening Age and remain growing to this day: Awe'o, a very tall fruit tree with a white trunk that can be found all over the orchards in the south of Besusy. It produces a pale yellow fruit in the shape of an oval sphere cut in half. It takes around 6 years to grow from sprout to full tree, and 1 more year to bear fruit. It bears fruit in spring and summer, and sheds its leaves in autumn, remaining bare during winter. It quickly grows back towards the start of spring and is bearing fruit by the middle of the season.

It is a very self sufficient and resilient tree that has been cultivated for ages. There are a number of cultivars in Besusy alone, though the most prestigious and expensive is known as the 'ia-dam' cultivar, a particularly sweet variant of the fruit that has a very specific, aromatic taste and is used in a great variety of products. These trees have a thin green sap which has little use in harvest, since it can create sickness in the tree and prevent fruit from growing. They have high, upwards branches that develop pale green long leaves, with spikes along the edges. The leaves are hard and crack easily with pressure when slightly dry. The fruit has a soft exterior with small bumps, which can be used to determine the ripeness of the fruit.

They have a light orange inside, segmented into thirds, each third enveloped inside a thin edible membrane. The insides are fleshy and juicy. It has uses in candle making and other aromatics, gastronomy as a raw element and as a complement to dishes, and as an antiflamatory for cuts and bruises. The fruit turns green upon being overripe, and quickly decays. They have 1-2 centimeter seeds inside the fruit, but outside the membranes. This is an artificial addition by zu'aan, since there was no need for a private cultivar to have effective reproductive abilities. Now that they're alone, however, it's expected that the seeds will once more begin growing inside the pulp, so that they may be eaten by other species and properly spread.

Kuabari, a berry that grows in vine bushes, typically found on manors devoted to brewing and fermentation. It is a deep orange berry shaped like three spheres stuck together, with a soft exterior covered only by a thin layer of skin, and a pulpous and viscous sweet interior. It is commonly used in wine making and other types of alcohol due to the abudance in which it grows, and the ease and quality of its fermentation. The bushes are vine-like and grow vertically across poles or even building walls. Wild variants are allowed to grow semi-freely around the buildings and mansions are regarded as a safe outdoors snack, while the kind used for commerce is kept in proper growing material and treated accordingly.

There are a small number of cultivars for kuabari, some of them made to diversify the properties it has on alcoholic drinks, and a small minority bred specifically to be eaten raw or used as an ingredient without fermentation. A long-curated specimen, it cannot survive in the wild, as even the 'wild' variants that exist in walls and structures are kept close to their original plantations, else they would not survive. The bushes themselves are deep green and produce a small, round leaf in clusters. As of the Awakening Age, it has survived the kin'toni outbreak and remains growing in the abandoned manors in the south of Besusy.

Animals

There are many remnants of the pastoral animal life that once thrived among the fields of the Besusy Pastureland. As native wildlife is very few, the large part of the current animal population in Besusy is made of once domestic and farm animals that now roam free. Here are a number of them: Fiow'am, a very large, grey primate with a unique cycle of life. These mammals are similar to primates only in their taxonomy, as in all other matters they more closely resemble bovines. They are very large, with their bodies able to store fat indefinitely, causing them to inflate. These fat reserves are consumed by their bodies only little by little, taking only what is absolutely necessary for their survival, and prioretizing the gaining of weight.

The reason for this is simple; zu'aan interference. Over millenia, these animals have been trained by zu'aan to be rewarded for gaining weight, and their bodies have followed suit and learned this formula for survival. An average adult fiow'am is about 1 to 2 meters in lenght, both ways, with a typical height of 2 meters and an astounding weight of anywhere from 300 to 400 kilograms, with 280 kilograms as the recorded smallest weight in nearby generations and 560 kilograms the largest. The reason they are bred to gain as much weight as possible as to do with the chemical composition of their fat. Their fat, turns out, is incredibly resilient and capable of being used, after being properly refined, in a great variety of ways and applications, such as lubricants, natural oils, grease, cooking oils, and direct use in cuisine.

They are born relatively small, after a gestastion period of 10 months, and at this age they are born already with an incredible appetite and bodies made for retaining fat. At the beggining, however, they were force fed and made to gain weight artificially, a cruel practice that surely would not survive to the modern ages. However, by the time these ethic restrictions came to light, their bodies were already largely accustumed with retaining fat and gaining tremendous amounts of weight, not to mention their blood vessels had even adapted to run their course so as to avoid the fat and therefore limit heart problems as much as possible. So the practice remained, since not feeding them at this point would simply cause them to starve.

The fat is removed from their bodies via surgery, and they are never killed if it can be helped, as their meat does not have many decent applications. They have thin grey fur and a large white belly, as well as medium sized heads with tiny round ears to the sides and whiskers, remnants of the evolutionary branch that they once shared with a kind of mole rat. They have short limbs and can barely move around by themselves, mostly lazing around all day and eating. They are very social and enjoy the presence of other species, even going as far as befriending them. As of the Awakening Age, few of them remain, as they were simply not made for the purpose of survival. The few that do remain are taken care of by zu'aan.

Since they are omnivores capable of eating pretty much anything, feeding them large amounts of food is not too much of an issue. As for their precious fat, the new surviving zu'aan sadly have no surgical means to remove it without killing the host, and so it is harvested only on occasion, through means of slaughter. They are believed to be going extinct, and none exist in the wild.
