Geography
Baestan Lush Desert is composed of a series of islands with small variations in temperature range and few changes between seasons. This region has tropical weather all year, reaching the lowest temperature to 9°C. The average temperature is between 23 °C and 27°C, reaching the maximum temperature during summer´s solar waves at 42 °C. Baestan Islands and their surrounding waters used to be a terrain not populated by Zu´aan since the terrain is very dry and the land is not appropriated for agriculture, the first crude map of the island had only 22 islands.
There are a total of 27 islands, 19 of them are bigger enough to be seen from the sea. The Zu´aan had not named each individual island, only for a research facility that was abandoned in one of the major islands. The major islands are not just wider, also higher than minor islands, with more diversity in animals and plants. The archipelago islands have relatively low precipitation throughout the year (generally 200–750 mm (7.9–29.5 in) annually, 1,000 mm (39 in) in some areas), primarily as rain during the autumn months, with occasional rains after tropical storms.
Since Baestan islands were formed by volcanic activity the terrain in the major islands is fairly hilly, however, the hills are not very tall, the higher points are 35 feet tall. The soil tends to be arid and poor in nutrients. The shores are relatively short, however salt from the sea is present several meters inland of the islands. Most of the vegetation found is typical of the desert than tropical climates, there are large patches of sand and a few sandy grass occasional patches. The distribution of plants is limited due to the dry soil and the high salt amount, the variety of plants is large and many of them show high aesthetic characteristics.
The ground can be too hard for roots due there are large pieces of stone like granite, sandstone, and basalt. Despite the origin of the islands was a high volcanic activity that given rise to them from the deep of the sea, currently there is not important activity in the tectonic plates. The islands are made of extinct volcanoes, by seamounts that risen abruptly from the seafloor. There are several underwater caves below the islands that were formed by the escape of gas. The underwater caves can reach 20 miles distance and the wide goes from 7 to 19 feet.
There are no active volcanoes in the islands, some of the major islands have extinct volcanoes that are not very tall, composed of basalt stone. Underwater there are a few active volcanoes, small as craters, which release small volume of gases continuously, forming areas without oxygen under the sea where can´t be living forms.
Baestan Lush Desert is an archipelago composed of 27 islands, which are 19 major islands and 8 smaller islands. There are 56 rock islets that are not big enough to appear on the map, neither closer to the islands. The area of the islands is 3,500 square miles of land spread over 16,800 square miles of ocean. The largest of the islands measures 2,200 square miles, with an elevation of 5700 feet above sea level and an extinct volcano. The 19 major islands have a total land area of at least 2/3 of the archipelago, the smaller of them have a half-mile radius.
Most of them are flat, created by geological uplift. More of the islands have hilly terrain, one of the islands is a narrow stretch of land and black lava rocks. Another island is formed by the remaining edge of a large caldera, a large cauldron shape volcanic chamber that is submerged. The biggest island has Baestan research facility, there is a small airport that was more frequently used by helicopters. There is also a communication tower and a power plant. The second larger island measures 1,900 square miles, it has a seahorse shape since it was formed by the merging of five large volcanoes into a single landmass.
The third biggest island, with an area of 1800 square miles, has a big amount of iron in the lava that gives the soil a distinctive red color.
The 8 minor islands are bigger than rock islets like the major islands were created by geologic uplift and have a flat surface, they have less hilly terrain, most of them with no mounts and big rocks. There is less vegetation on them and have fewer, smaller animals, mainly used by birds as a place to nest. The distance between the islands is from 2 to 5 miles, it is possible to travel through the islands with a boat, and it is safer to use engine boats due the unstable sea current.
There are several seamounts underwater, some of them are barely below water level that makes it inaccessible to reach the islands by large ships since the hull of the ships can be cracked by underwater peaks. There is a large system of underwater caves connected below the islands, they were formed by gas and collided seamounts, the caves can reach 20 miles distance, the conduit size is varied, in some areas space can be 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide, in other sections, there are large chambers of 19 feet wide. The underwater caves are the habitat of large fishes and submarine hunt areas for the Kin´toni.
Plants
The flora of Baestan Lush Desert is influenced by the environment of the very dry and hot lower areas, which may be barren, treeless, and generally have no large tyxi. The rich variety of beauty makes all the plants comparatively lush, which gives name to the desert, with large columnar tyxi that can withstand extreme conditions. Like many other tropical environments, there are palm trees growing on the shores, these palms are slightly shorter than palm trees in other places.
Inland plants must survive their hot and dry conditions. Temperatures can be greater than 42 °C. It is common to find areas where a layer of pebbles is left after wind and water removes the lighter gravels and sand, and the pebbles are cemented together with desert varnish, causing landforms called desert pavement that is impenetrable to many species. Living trees are mostly absent, even so, it´s common to see dead trees which seed germinated and grew however the roots could not penetrate more into the ground and the water absence dried off the trees.
There are many kinds of tyxi which shapes and colors make them look beautiful, which can be considered plants for a luxury garden. There are several varieties of each plant specimen. The most important tyxi are the next: Red tyxi, a column shape tyxi that can grow between 3 and 5 feet tall, its red color is due to the plant takes nutrients from the soil with high amounts of iron in the ground. Its thorns are ordered in a horizontal position, of orange color that is one inch long.
voorasktyxi, a snail seashell-shaped plant that is 1 foot tall and 3 feet wide. Its thorns are distributed along the body, short and small of 0.2 inches long. Squid tyxi, a plant with large, thin branches with a curved, distorted shape similar to tentacles. The name of the tyxi is due it looks like a giant squid in a vertical position that emerges from the ground and stretches its tentacles up. It has small thorns of 0.4 inches long. Pinwheel tyxi, this plant has a star shape with the beaks curved, its color is green however the thorns are transparent.
The sunlight through the thorns makes a variety of colors that produces the illusion the tyxi is spinning. gathrityxi, a wide barrel shape plant which surface is curved, while tyxi flowers use to be of the same color and shape this one has flowers of different colors, varied shapes, and different petals growing on it. It´s believed birds bring flower seeds and they germinated over the tyxi instead of the ground. There are different kinds of bushes, they can be divided into dried bushes and colored bushes. Dried bushes use to have 4 feet tall, full of thin dark branches with no leaves.
They can be considered in a hibernation state, waiting for rainwater to grow leaves. Colored bushes are 2 feet tall, their small size let them bloom leaves in the branches, and each leaf has a size of less than an inch long. Colored bushes use to have red or yellow leaves that grow inclined almost vertical position.
Animals
Baestan Islands are rich in rare and unique animal species, each island is home to different kinds of animals that are not present on the rest of the islands. The shores of the islands have rocks that are a nest of insects that birds eat, also it is easier for the birds fishing on the low waters that give the fishes less space to escape. The archipelago is a resting spot for many migrant birds, so it´s possible to see a variety of birds that are common in other places.
The rocky shores attract migrating birds like yirks, wovocs, yzgunns among others. The yirks being black and yellow, smaller in size males between 30-37cm and females from 35-40cm, producing high pitched mating calls and little yellowish eggs with brown spots; wovoc is a large winged bird with surprisingly durable feathers; and yzguun is a bird that has a feathered set of wings with but since their wingspan is around 10 feet access just flapping their wings fast enough should help them ascend from the ground.
These birds fly miles of distance to get to the archipelago shores, build nests, and set eggs, once the chicks can fly they migrate in different directions depending on the species. Another bird that can be seen is the karidaa, a bird that eats eggs and dead meat. It has light blue feathers and colorful wing feathers, it came attracted by the eggs of the other birds. The most important birds of Baestan are the Awin, a kind of penguin that lives on the beach, builds nests in the rocks, and swims in the sea to fish; and the brown Fliv, a wild chicken that usually lives in the forests and makes nests on trees.
But this variety lives in the bushes and makes nests on tall tyxi, can´t fly but moves with successive jumps. Most of the animals on the islands are insects, small reptiles, and some small mammals, the more common is a kind of Anyau, a rodent-like. They eat insects and some of the plants of the region. They are nimble scavengers, using whatever they can find to build their nests. The bigger animals can be found underwater, there is a variety of medium and large fishes that lives in the caves formed below the islands.
Fishes that can be found on the surface, swimming between the rocks of the shores, are small and don´t represent enough nutrition amount for bigger species than birds and other fishes. At 25 feet depth in the sea, there can be found fishes of 2 to 3 feet long, these fishes swim to the surface to eat smaller fishes. At 38 feet depth, the level of the underwater caves can be found fishes of 4 to 6 feet long, those fishes don´t swim to the surface, their habitat is along with the caves, looking for hunt younger, smaller fishes.
