Geography
The beautiful Ashang region is a massive valley sitting well below sea level with multiple levels at varying elevation and half a dozen deep lakes scattered amongst the territory. Some of the lower levels are vast rice fields, while some of the middle levels were once lush vineyards. The native Ashang people were once rice farmers, fishers, and makers of fine wine. Many villages once encircled the different lakes with a latticework of bridges and docks hovering just above the waters to allow for the use of nets and other fishing traps. Each of the rice fields were positioned around a circular structured village at heart of each field.
The separate vineyards were managed by villages of vintners who resided in a single large building built into the ridge walls to oversee their specific crop. These buildings was also where the wines were manufactured. The beauty and the exports of the region drew a lot of tourists, and so the highest levels that were still below the ridge line were used to house the visitors. A vast resort town was built along this overlooking level to give the tourists the best view of the region while not allowing them to interfere in the work of the Ashang people.
Passages and cave tunnels allowed the Ashang to move between the different elevations and out to the world beyond their valley. Underground rivers fed into the lakes and enriched the soil of the entire region. When the Xerea Empire fell, the region was inundated with refugees hoping to survive the new situation and foolishly believed everything would return to normal after a bit of time. The resort town was refurbished to accommodate the multitude new arrivals for as long as they needed. However over time the relationship between the Ashang and remnants of the Empire grew strained and the Ashang closed off the passages to and from the resort town.
While this was done on the insistence of the petrified refugees, it was the one action that spelled their doom. When the kin'toni plague overtook the Ashang they abandoned their villages and vineyards and instead built towering fortresses floating on the six lakes of the region.after they killed all the zu'aan in the refugee town they destroyed all evidence of their old way of life and used the materials to build a barrier along the ridge line to prevent an invasion from the other regions. Due to their change in priorities the region lost its Tamed appearance as the vineyards were abandoned and the rice fields were initially neglected.
However while the location is no longer tamed it still retains much of its tranquil beauty even with the massive war ready floating fortresses covering the lakes. Many of the passages were closed off in favour of creating new ones that could be disguised to prevent them from being followed after they return from one of their hunts. However the tunnels from the old resort to the world beyond still exist even though the openings by the town are collapsed.
Plants
The vegetation of Ashang has always been lush and rich. The region was known for its delicious rice and wide variety of wines. The entire region’s culture originally hinged on the people being farmers and vintners. However there were far more plants to the region than just rice and the grapes for wine. The Ashang people maintained the entire region so that people were drawn to the region because its beauty. To feed these visitors as well as offer themselves more variety, the farmers had hidden gardens full of vegetables and fruit as well as spices to use in their cooking.
However, when the kin'toni plague swept through the lands, much of the maintenance of the vegetation was abandoned. The majority of the gardens and vineyards were destroyed and the rest grew wild and unkempt as the Ashang people had been turned into kin'toni and began hunting and readying for potential war. The only crop to be still gathered with any regularity was the rice because of the myriad of uses it provided. So the region that had ones be a tourist spot because of its great food and tamed beauty was now a wild paradise in the hands of blood thirsty creatures.
The most common and widely thought of plant associated with the region is the dwl'wana, or more commonly known as dwl'wana. Grown in flooded fields, the dwl'wana is at first easily mistaken for regular grass by the untrained eye. However, the harvested crop is recognised by the light brown hue of the grains. The plant is often traded at high prices because of the many uses besides just as a source of food. The native Ashang used it to create paper, wine, bread, aid in cosmetics and laundry, and as beading in clothes and jewellery.
The crop had allowed them to resist the control of the Xerea Empire through a trade agreement, and after the kin'toni claimed the region they began trading rice once more to gain materials necessary for building an army for war. A lesser known product for the vegetation trade of the region was the the chanynda. The small evergreen shrub has lovely yellow flowers with six petals. However it is the leaves of the plant that is highly prized. The leaves are dried in a particular way with a variety of spices herbs or fruits to be used as a flavouring agent and infusion of nutrients into boiled water.
The teas often have soothing or even invigorating effects upon initial consumption, while prolonged usage has been known to improve the health of the individual. Variations of the beverage have been known to produce different effects but the dried leaves is alway present in every version. Many used to claim that it was the tea that made the Ashang so gentle and kind, and that the Ytal kin'toni clan they became are more like what the Ashang would have been if they had never had the tea.
Animals
The waters of the lakes of Ashang were teaming with aquatic life. There were a few domesticated farm animals on the land within the borders of the region, but the majority of wildlife lived under water. Because of this half the export trade was for some of local varieties of fish that could not be found elsewhere. The fishers of Ashang used every tool they could to catch the heavily desired fish from the depth of the lakes. And when they dived down to set the various underwater traps, many of the fishers reported that there were cavern leading to underground rivers that fed into the lakes and brought a host of new fish and other aquatic creatures with them.
When the kin'toni plague swept through the region and the people of Ashang became the Ytal clan, they continued to fish from their floating fortresses. The fish they didn’t consume were often traded for weapons or for zu'aan to drain and turn. And while the farming trade went down as the world changed, the fishing trade increased as the kin'toni were primarily carnivorous in nature. And so they fished more greedily in the hopes that they could gorge themselves on whatever meat and blood they could find. One of the most commonly desired fish local to the region is the avadra.
The avadra is a medium to large fish that is longer and thinner than most other freshwater fish and earned it’s name for the crimson scales that cover half of its length. The avadra is desired for its sharp taste that gives way to a sweet aftertaste that blends well with several types of Ashang wine. After the kin'toni swept across the continent and changed the world, the pike was desired not just for the taste and its potential nostalgia but also for the higher amount of blood it tended to contain. Another popular fish that come only from the lakes of Ashang is the tix'ryl or the tyx'arda.
These ugly mud coloured fish are known for their unique nature of tasting like a medley of different fish depending on how it is prepared. Some believed this is due to the fish being carnivorous and cannibalistic, bringing a literal example of being what they eat. Others believe its due to the fish actually being so bland that it absorbs the flavours for whatever it’s cooked with. Whatever the reason, the fish is one that is the easiest to catch and the most commonly sold. This earned it the secondary moniker of the copied fish because it was far cheaper to get them than the other exotic fish.
And if it was prepared correctly no one would be able to tell the difference between the real expensive fish and the cheaper tix'ryl. In fact many believed that the restaurants of the Xerea Empire would sell dishes of tix'ryl as though they were the more expensive types of fish.
