History

Historical Overview

Aleves is a region of arid desert land located in the center east of the Aqidwyz landmass of Taerel. Its terrain is largely rugged with very few major roads, but access to the region is possible from the Ta'lalat Mountains in the north. The region's capital is the village of Asjae, a populous city that is know across the bordering regions for its high touristic influx. Aleves became known during the modern eras for its hold on the silver mining industry, something they had formerly been known for during era 2, but lead them to fall back. To explain the deal, in the previous era, era 2, as well as the earlier eras, Aleves was a well known mining region, due to its high silver content.

However, these silver resources were slowly exhausted after the establishment of new mining industries that sought to ravage the land more than they could afford. Greed took over these men, who knew that because the mining industry was the staple of this region, it was singlehandedly the best and quickest way to become rich. This then led to a quick decline in silver mining, which resulted in an increase in unemployment. Even though the people were desperate, their economic situation was not unbearable, because of good trade relations with the outside world and decent diplomatic agreements. Even so, the decline of the mining industry that had held together the entire region brought an economic recession to the entire area that would not be easy to escape from, and, as loads of companies sought to minimize damage, ran away.

They curbed personnel, the zu'aan of Aleves entered an economic depression that would last them all the way until the modern ages, when mining could once again proceed healthily and without costing the people their live hoods or their natural environment. Aside from the silver mining industry that gained Aleves its reputation, it is a small, quaint region not know for much else. As a desert region, it is not very hospitable or likely to have touristic attraction. It is such an unremarkable expanse of desert land, that its exact origins in terms of colonization are uncertain, and scholars, what few there are of them, often argue on a time bracket of hundreds and even thousands of years.

The communities here are largely rural, and, like most mining centered civilizations, it is thought that they developed after miner's villages began to grow and hold more life.

Geography

Aleves Tropical Desert - regions with a dry climate, flat terrain, sparse vegetation, special fauna. It almost never rains here; the air temperature is subject to large daily fluctuations, reaching unimaginable temperatures during the day. Desert surfaces may consist of sand, clay and stone. They are practically uninhabited by the zu'aan, and their plant and animal life is not rich. Extreme living conditions reign in the flat and plateau desert zones: incredibly high temperatures, minimal rainfall, water bodies and groundwater, strong winds and scorching sun. However, deserts are home to thousands of special plant and animal species that have adapted to this challenging life.

Deserts in the tropics are characterized by a very hot and arid climate. They owe this to the trade winds - year-round winds blowing over the oceans between the Northern and Southern tropics. The air masses carried by the trade winds are very dry, since they lose all moisture even in the equatorial zone, and above the desert, the air, heated from the ground, dries even more. The relative and absolute humidity of the air in deserts tends to zero, and there is very little precipitation, and these are either intense, but rare showers, or fog. Under the influence of heat and dryness, groundwater is drawn to the surface, moisture quickly evaporates, and salts dissolved in it accumulate and cause soil salinization.

Under the influence of strong winds, dust or sand storms occur in deserts, spreading over thousands of kilometers. Dried land is easily eroded. Desert land is not fertile. It has little organic content. The tropical zone is characterized by red-brown and primitive soils. In vast areas, the fertile layer is completely absent; they are covered with sand, stone, rubble. So-called “desert tan” forms on a rocky surface: a dark film a few microns thick from metal oxides. When moistened, blue-green algae multiply in this crust, the stones “bloom”. Primitive (undeveloped) soils contain almost no organic matter, agriculture is impossible on them, and the use of fertilizers is practically inefficient.

The Aleves Tropical Desert is characterized by sandy soils. Distinguish between hilly (unfixed) and dune sands. Dunes condense well and accumulate moisture from the air, therefore, contrary to a common misconception; they are relatively favorable for life. It is on the fixed sands that the flora and fauna of sandy deserts are concentrated. Reddish-brown ferralitic and siallitic soils are somewhat more fertile, they form on the borders of tropical deserts, and sparse vegetation occurs on them. These lands are of little use for agriculture, but they can be used as pastures. In relatively humid regions, there are patches of serozems or loams. These soils are more suitable for agriculture, especially under artificial irrigation.

In the lowlands, one can often see salt marshes and salt crusts. Salts from rocks or groundwater accumulate in the soil layer due to low rainfall. These lands are unsuitable for agriculture; only solonchak plants grow on them. The most waterless and lifeless desert landscapes are rocky. Hamads, formed by massive crystalline or sedimentary rocks and clayey takyrs are almost devoid of vegetation.

Plants

Plant life in the arid, desert lands of Aleves is mainly comprised of cacti, small dry reeds and short grass, and the occasional shrub. In other words, there is very little plant life in these arid lands, and what little there is of it is located sparsely and far in between from each other, forbidding the creation of clusters of plant life like one would see in other, less arid places. Nevertheless, there are a few unique specimens that manage to make their home in this harsh environment, and here a few of them: Dalia, the so called 'cave serpent', a flowering bush mixed plant that thrives within the remnants of cave opening within Aleves, where silver used to be mined by the multiple zu'aan communities in the area.

While many of these silver mines have grown to decrepitude following the apocalypse, many of them still stand, and their openings, typically much larger than the actual thing, definitely still remain. Its in the cool, moist openings, in the shade and far from the burning desert sun, that the dalia grows, a short herbaceous shrub that clings to the walls of the caves and feeds on its rich mineral deposits left over from the mining era of the zu'aan and present naturally in the region. It produces a long stalk that grows outside the opening of the mines, and that single stalk absorbs what little sunlight it requires to survive, retreating during the harmful hours of the day and during most of summer and spring.

During the colder months, and even sometimes during the nights of spring, some specimens of the plant will produce a wild white flower with a brown center and dirty white petals shaped like hearts, usually five or six. This very rare flower lasts a very short while and dies within the same day it sprouts. None of the plant is edible to zu'aan, but the flowers are waited for patiently during the year and managing to collect them is seen as a good omen. Yeuka, a cactus that survives on the open sun of the Aleves desert. It is a circular plant that as an overarching, unique physical structure that makes it so its edges fold towards the inside, giving it a peculiar and very distinct look.

Asides from that, it is a very common cactus plant that behaves very much like one. It flowers during the entire year, a single stem at the top of its body that has short orange petals and grows in a singular cluster of 5-6 flowers. Its leaves are short needles that hang out about 2-3 inches and are very sharp to the touch, and its tissue is a very light green, akin to fresh prairie grass. It is not edible and has no edible parts by zu'aan dietary standards but is often used for decorative purposes, due to the peculiar shape of its body, which is thought to be that way for precipitation retention, back when Aleves might have received a measure of constant rain.

Animals

The desert climate is quite dry and harsh for many earthly inhabitants. During the day, it is incredibly hot here, and at night, there is a sharp cooling. Food and water are scarce here, and sandstorms are a problem for anyone caught in them. However, despite all the difficulties of life, even in such a dangerous and harsh place there are inhabitants who were able to adapt to the conditions of the Aleves Tropical Desert.

Relic

Relic - A desert lizard that lives deep underground. It has a surprisingly bright color, mixing shades of red and yellow. On hot days, the relic lives in its cool holes, which it digs deep underground, and at night, it gets out, warming its body with sand, which heats up well during the day. The relic moves as if floating in the sand, thanks to which it can develop a relatively high speed. These lizards eat only insects and are not at all dangerous; however, they are quite playful and like to suddenly jump out of the sand, scaring uninformed travelers. Skalat are massive reptile-like mammals, whose size usually exceeds 3 meters. The body of the skalat is adapted to survive in the harsh and aggressive environment of the desert.

For example, their massive hump is used as a reservoir for water, and if it is full, the rock can go without liquids for up to a couple of weeks. This beast moves on two hind legs, and a long flat tail helps it to erase its footprints in the sand. The front legs are shorter and almost never used by the animal. The skalat's eyes are located on either side of the head, which is why the beast has a rather specific viewing angle and a blind spot right in front of the nose. In addition, his eyes can be covered with a translucent eyelid, like a film, to protect them from flying sand. The color of this animal varies depending on the region, in the northern part of the desert, the rock has a golden color, while in the south the wool coarsens and becomes browner.

Yaa'lak is a carrion bird of prey. They are quite small, but are dangerous due to the size of the packs they usually hunt in. Moreover, one flock can number up to 100, thanks to which the victims of these little hunters are several times larger than their own size. Yaa'lak has a thick black plumage, during the day they prefer to rest, hiding from the scorching sun, and after dark, they go hunting. Despite the fact that these birds are scavengers, they may well attack even living creatures. For example, sleeping skalati often fall prey to them, zu'aan can also be victims of yaa'lak, especially if they do not find shelter by night. It also often happens that yaa'laks fly out of the desert in search of food and then they become a serious problem, these predators that can eat a carcass of any size can become a really big disaster for nature.
