Geography
Because of the hot springs, the land of Cerdra was beautiful and hot. There were vast fields surrounding the springs that lead to swamps that were hidden by a thick cover of trees. Within the fields, there were hills that added a vast difference to the land. From each one there was something different that could be seen that couldn’t be seen from other ones. At some, you could see where the swamps were, whereas at others, you could see different parts of the valley.
Alongside the hills that were there, there were also trees that could be seen dusting the fields there, there were some that kept the swamp hidden, making it so that the swamps were not easily accessed unless you knew how to properly navigate between the trees to get to them. This allowed the animals to get to the swamps when they wanted cooler water to bathe in or to drink, but their offspring had a place that they could avoid and knew well enough not to go there. The trees there were tall and thick around the trunk. They stood firm within the heat, using the humidity that the heat brought to grow taller and stronger.
They were topped with needles that would soak up any and all moisture in the air, and they would use this so that they had enough moisture getting down to their roots whenever there were any hot spells. As stated, the land here would become unbearably hot on occasion. This, paired with the hot springs made it hard for new life to take hold and to grow there. However, the life that had already been established had evolved and learned to be able to tolerate the heat so that they could live there. This was easier for the plants there as they were able to suck as much of the moisture out of the air to use for themselves.
The animals had a harder time enduring the heat. While they had evolved to live there, when there were females that were soon to give birth, or older/sick animals, they would have a harder time trying to survive the sudden rise in temperature, and thus would likely succumb to the temperatures. Even as time passed and they had learned to adapt to the heat, finding ways to cope with it, there were still many that didn’t understand and would end up passing as the heat would become too much for them to handle.
Eventually, after the Ereorm clan had made the swamps their home and had driven the animals away from there, the land had taken pity on the animals and the next time there was rainfall, a beautiful new pond that had formed in a deeper pit of the valley. The animals had been grateful of this as it meant that they had a new source of drinking water, as well as a way to cool down when the heat rose.
Plants
Since Cerdra Hot Springs was such a hot and humid place, any plants that grew there would have to be resilient to the heat and be able to grow well with little to no rainfall there. This meant that there weren’t too many unique plants, but the ones that were there grew well and were able to feed many of the animals that called the land of Cerdra their home. One of the plants that grew there was a thick fern. This fern was three feet tall and very thick. It grew around the springs and drank in the heat to continue to grow. Because of how it was able to grow so easily with the heat and the humidity, the fern was the most abundant food source for the animals there.
The animals that would eat plants to survive would seek out their ferns so they could eat them and ensure that they were able to grow. The more of the fern the animals ate, the more they would spread the seeds of the fern around, and thus they would ensure that more fern was growing for them to eat. Along with the ferns, there was an abundance of long grass that covered the fields. However, this grass was course and hard for animals to eat. It was yellow in color and eating it would leave a bitter taste in your mouth if you were to take a bite of it.
Because of this, many of the animals would avoid eating it as it also didn’t give them many nutrients if they were to eat it as well. Therefore, the grass was left alone, and the animals would find other food sources to enjoy for their meals. Within some of the trees there were rich fruits that would grow there. These fruits were rich and tasty, although they were very hard to get to as they would grow in the very tall trees. Because of this, there were only a few animals that were able to eat them. These animals were greedy with their fruit as they didn’t want to give any or drop any for any other animals.
When there were fruits that would drop because they weren’t eaten and would rot, the seeds would start to grow new trees and the fruit would spread through the forest, adding a new food source for any animals that were brave enough and able to climb the tall trees to go and get it. When the Ereorm clan had found the swamps, they had tried to climb the trees so that they could take some of the fruits, but they found that the trees were hard to climb, and even harder to get off of, so they had given up on trying to get any of the fruit.
Each of these plants were unique to Cerdra Hot Springs as their seeds were so hard to get a hold of and they needed such hot weather to grow that when their seeds were taken to other climates, they weren’t able to take hold and grow.
Animals
Since the climate was so warm, there were no long-haired animals that lived in Cerdra Hot Springs. The heat wouldn’t allow much hair to grow on the animals as if it did, the animal would overheat and pass away. Thus, many of the animals had short fur, or no fur at all. Because there was fruit in the tops of the trees, there needed to be an animal that was able to climb the trees and be able to go up and get the fruit. This animal was the juka. The juka was a spindly animal that could walk on two legs or four as needed, very similarly to monkeys. However, the juka had much longer limbs, allowing for it to climb at a faster speed to be able to get to the tops of the trees where there was fruit growing.
They were very greedy little creatures and would refuse to share the food that they were able to find. As well, when they noticed any other animals, they would sit very still and allow for their beige fur to blend in with the trees. That would be how they would be able to hide from predators as well, but they usually used this to hide from other animals that wanted the food the juka’s weren’t willing to share. Alongside the juka’s there were small deer like creatures that were stuck on the ground. They had long skinny legs that they would use to run from their predators.
They lived in the fields and would use the grass to build little nests under stray trees where they would sleep and birth their offspring. Otherwise, they would be out and about, hoping to keep predators away from where they would sleep. They were called inditch, and they were very smart creatures. They would keep other animals away from their homes by creating decoy homes and laying there for a while so that the other animals would think that they were sleeping there, and would come back to catch an inditch, only to find that they weren’t there, and that they didn’t actually live there.
They would do this multiple times to keep other animals away from them, and they would usually be quite successful. Finally, there were the chunts. These animals were the predators to the juka’s and the inditch. They were large cat like creatures that had clubs on their tails. They would use their tails to beat their prey when they did catch it, using them to break bones so that their prey couldn’t escape them. The chunts lived in the fields mainly, but they would occasionally burrow into the sides of the hills or under some of the trees.
They did this so that they were able to cool off more since they didn’t like the water unless they intended to catch fish or to drink. They would avoid the water as much as they could and would instead focus on catching their prey before they would go back to their underground homes.
