History

The Uathy kin'toni clan’s origins are well-known throughout zu'aan and kin'toni history. It all began when the young 10 year old twins of the Uathy family were infected by the kin'toni plague in the year 4E 89. The parents of the twins knew what that plague entailed but refused to kill their beloved children and the children refused to infect their parents because of the love they bore for them. They were fed blood by their father and mother. The parents worked together to kidnap other zu'aan children into the night and fed them to their children. This was a sick and terrible thing to do even by kin'toni standards. But the parents’ love was so strong that they would do anything to keep their children alive.

One night the parents were caught and killed during one of their kidnappings, never to return home. The Uathy twins waited day and night in their house. They knew that they could not go out during the day because the sun would kill them. But after a few days and nights without drinking blood, they became very hungry. They decided to go out at night to look for fresh blood to drink. Their hunger was unbearable and they could not control their thirst for blood. They knocked on the door of their neighbor. The latter, who recognized the two children, let them in. But the twins both became like ravenous beasts and attacked him.

They drank his blood as he screamed into the night. Due to their bloodthirst, they could not recognize familiar faces and killed blindly to feed. But the twins were aware of their condition. After their meal, they realized what they had done to a former family friend. Since that day, they chose to get rid of all the bonds of friendship they once shared with zu'aan. They went from house to house with their innocent faces and infected many zu'aan families in the neighbourhood. They wanted new friends and family to play with. The neighbours could not believe that the Uathy twins had become kin'tonis.

They cursed the sick kin'toni who had infected the twins. Soon the whole neighbourhood turned. The small village the Uathy twins resided in became known as a kin'toni village. There are currently around 300 Uathy kin'tonis. They named themselves Uathy after the beautiful twins’ surname. After listening to the stories of the sobbing children, the zu'aan the twins infected pitied them. The adults said they would not leave them alone and would look after them, no longer as zu'aan but kin'tonis. The Uathy twins were so pure and kept their innocence despite being turned into kin'tonis.

They do not realize that feeding on blood was wrong by zu'aan standards, but there was nothing they could do. They hungered for blood. The Uathy kin'tonis are therefore known as zu'aan who became kin'tonis because they pitied the kin'toni twins, So’ro and Si’ri Uathy. They could not kill the beautiful 10 year olds and let themselves turn willingly. Most of them became kin'tonis because they knew the Uathy kids ever since they were babies and refused to kill them for that reason.

Biology

The Uathy kin'tonis have varying heights and sizes. This is due to the fact that there are many kin'toni children in the clan. But even the adults bear child-like features. Most of the Uathy kin'tonis are short, the tallest being around 1 m 60 cm. They are not very strong but when they are in the state of bloodlust or extreme hunger, their strength is tripled. They attack like ravenous and hungry beasts, their face distorting into an ugly grimace as they try to bite their prey. They have innocent faces when in their normal state but their faces transform when they are hungry.

Their expressions change like that of a hungry wolf when in their bloodthirsty state, and they also growl like beasts when faced with a prey. The Uathy kin'tonis’ eyes have green irises with white sclerae and horizontal rectangular pupils. Their emerald eyes are pretty and glow green in the dark. The Uathy kin'tonis developed night vision over time and can see better in the dark compared to any zu'aan. They also have naturally good hearing. While it is not ultra distant, their hearing is quite refined and they can detect small and soft noises like whispers or the snapping of a twig.

Their sense of smell is heightened whenever there are live zu'aan around. They can smell the corporal odors of any zu'aan and know where they may be hiding. The smell of blood arouses their appetite. The nails of the Uathy kin'tonis are not pointy and look normal like that of any zu'aan. However, they are very strong and sturdy like rocks. They often sharpen their nails with metallic files to give them a pointy shape. They use those strong and sharp nails to dig into the flesh of their prey. The Uathy kin'tonis did not develop claws over time because they are a bit sedentary and do not hunt very often.

They go out and hunt only when hungry or in their bloodlust state. They can go several days without blood, but when they are hungry their senses are heightened. They will go to neighbouring villages to find blood when they are at their strongest in bloodlust mode. The Uathy kin'tonis blindly attack when in their state of bloodlust and cannot think rationally in that state. They may be faced with armed opponents but their hunger is so great that they would run at their enemies fearlessly and attack them like rabid beasts. They also cannot feel pain when wounded when they are extremely hungry, focusing only on killing prey and drinking blood.

It is only after the fact that they regain their conscience and start feeling the pain from their open wounds. Many do not use their senses when they find prey. They stop seeing, hearing, smelling and only focus on killing. Once they find their prey, they never let go of it. They do not care if it is a dangerous target as long as it represents a source of food.

Culture

The culture of the Uathy kin'toni clan is one that revolves around family and friendship. The Uathy kin'tonis like keeping familial bonds just like when they were zu'aan. A solid kinship formed around Si’ri and So’ro Uathy and all the kin'toni children. The adults always look after them as if they were still zu'aan children and the latter keep playing games from their times as zu'aan children. It is not uncommon for the adults to tell fairy tales to the children during daytime before they sleep in their sheltered homes. Most nights, when they are not hunting for zu'aan, the Uathy kin'tonis go out of their homes to have fun.

They open night shops where they sell grilled bloodroot and home-made gruel for those who are starting to feel hungry. While blood is more filling and tastes better, these foods can prevent the Uathy from becoming too bloodthirsty and behave more or less normally. Children are fed these types of food instead of blood because the adults know that it is dangerous for kids to hunt and they can be killed easily by armed zu'aan. So the kin'toni children have a relatively different diet from the adults. The adults have to eat double the amount of bloodroot and gruel to satisfy their hunger while one blood meal would have sufficed.

Games that the children kin'tonis play are hide-and-seek in the dark, jump the rope, the see-saw, tug of war and many more traditional games that any zu'aan children would play. Some prefer racing, others prefer playing cards, every kin'toni child has a preferred game. The girls like making and sewing ragdolls with pieces of cloth and thread and expertly weave the needles to create beautiful and colorfully-dressed dolls. In Uathy kin'toni culture, it is normal for women to know how to sew. Most of the female kin'tonis used to be seamstresses when they were zu'aan. They have not forgotten their craft and also spin wheels to make thread.

The men from the Uathy clan still cultivate crops such as wheat and oats despite being turned into kin'tonis more than a century ago. They also plant bloodroot. When they do not hunt for blood, they can rely on those foods to make gruel or grilled bloodroot. But it is difficult to feed a growing clan with just gruel and bloodroot and the Uathy are known to have large appetites. Agriculture is what allows the Uathy to survive and live like normal villagers. Some Uathy kin'tonis even dislike hunting, preferring to live on a half-full stomach all the time by eating solely bloodroot and gruel.

The language that the Uathy clan speaks is common zu'aan. They can understand zu'aan who sometimes pass by their village at night. The zu'aan are armed and often hail from a more prosperous city or village. It is dangerous to go in a kin'toni village, but the Uathy have kept some relations to other zu'aan. Even if they view them as food, they also view them as traders.

Government

The Uathy kin'toni clan’s government is municipal. At the head of the Uathy clan, there is a Mayor. He is in charge of overseeing the agricultural activities of the male Uathy kin'tonis, making sure that work is done in the fields at night. He also helps other kin'tonis and makes sure that they have all the basic necessities to live comfortably. Some families are poorer, but the Mayor provides for them with a charity fund and gives them some wheat and oats and some bloodroot to survive without having to risk their lives hunting zu'aan in other villages.

The Mayor of the Uathy clan was appointed long before year 4E 89. He was a zu'aan mayor and his municipality was under the jurisdiction of the sovereign state. But despite being turned into a kin'toni, the Mayor swore he would create a ‘peaceful’ kin'toni village to the authorities and that they would avoid feeding on blood as long as possible, eating only gruel and bloodroot instead of drinking zu'aan blood. The Uathy Mayor said that he wanted to keep ‘good relations’ with the zu'aan and that they wanted to live in peace with their ‘zu'aan brethren’.

The Uathy have not completely cast off their zu'aan heritage and relations and hence struck a deal with the authorities or higher power of the state. They were allowed to exist as long as they did not harm villages or cities from the state. They were free to do what they wanted with zu'aan who were not affiliated with the state or were enemies of the state, however. Being at the borders of the nation, the Uathy villagers can cross to other zu'aan lands freely and feed on the zu'aan from villages outside the jurisdiction of the state.

But the state has said countless times to avoid creating enmity with the neighbouring rival states so as to avoid triggering wars near the borders. The Uathy Mayor has thus summoned all 300 Uathy villagers to a village meeting to discuss the issue. He encouraged the villagers to eat gruel and bloodroot instead of drinking blood. The Uathy villagers were a bit disgruntled by the Mayor’s words, but listened. They had to work double to make enough food to feed themselves and they did not like that. They demanded a raise in their salary as workers in the fields.

The Mayor discussed this with an envoye from the main authorities. The authorities were not pleased. Sustaining the Uathy kin'tonis proved to be quite costly and they questioned if it was worth the effort to let them run the village. But the Mayor said he would raise the taxes he collected. The dispute was settled and the authorities agreed. But the Uathy were not pleased. They produced food only for themselves and were not rich enough to buy what they wanted and live a more luxurious life. Aside from agriculture they did not know any other trades. So, many of the Uathy started small shady businesses like planting illegal poisonous vines or trees and selling their leaves to passing travellers.

Military

The Uathy kin'toni clan does not have a very strong military, if any. The Uathy men only know how to wield spades, pitchforks and scythes. They are used to doing manual labour and do not know how to fight with weapons such as swords. The Uathy claim they are peaceful kin'tonis and as such do not fight. They can defend themselves only with their tools or whenever they are in their bloodlust state. But they cannot trigger their bloodlust unless they are extremely hungry and as such normally are inoffensive when well-fed with lots of gruel or bloodroot.

The military of the Uathy is one of the weakest among all kin'toni clans. As long as they are not hungry, they are happy and defenseless. They do not want to expand their clan by too much and do not try to expand their territories either. They want to be able to coexist with zu'aan and avoid killing any. That is why it is relatively safe for zu'aan to pass through the Uathy kin'toni village. The Uathy are one of the few kin'toni clans who have been ‘pacified’. However, even if the Uathy do not have an official military, many of the Uathy men are hired as mercenaries.

Some Uathy kin'tonis secretly train to wield daggers and make poison needles which they use to kill for others. The mercenary trade started recently and the Uathy kin'tonis do not realize that they are being used by zu'aan to risk their life for some extra money while the zu'aan stay safe. The Uathy are quite naive and many do not know that if they get caught, fingers will point to the Uathy clan as being one of assassins and mercenaries, hence destroying their reputation. The Uathy clan is secretly marginalized and the zu'aan pretend to view them as symbols of peace when all they see them as are disposable tools.

The zu'aan are cunning and they will do anything to get rid of the Uathy little by little. They do not want to get rid of the Uathy in a bloody massacre but plan to destroy their reputation as kin'tonis. The Uathy Mayor meant well when he said that he wanted kin'tonis to live in peace with the zu'aan. But the zu'aan plan and scheme to make the Mayor and his Uathy brethren look like hypocrites and cold killers, wolves disguised as sheep. Hence the Uathy, who cannot see through the schemes of the zu'aan, are used by them to dirty their hands and carry out dangerous tasks where their lives, and reputation, are at stake.

The Uathy are too simple-minded and naive to know what the zu'aan are planning. A worldwide war against the kin'tonis. The small Uathy village will serve as the stepping stone to a great war, 100 years in the making. How will they defend themselves? Will they survive or be wiped out? Will the peace be forever broken? But those questions never crossed an Uathy’s mind. They think they are safe thanks to the Mayor’s negotiations and never built a military for themselves.

Religion

The Uathy kin'toni clan worship the zu'aan goddess of family, motherhood and kinship, Hi’ra. To the Uathy and to many zu'aan, Hi’ra is like a Mother to them all who looks and cares for them. The women of the clan particularly worship her because many of them were once zu'aan mothers before turning. They eventually turned their children into kin'tonis so they could forever be mothers to them. A mother who takes good care of her child is a blessed one and many of the kin'toni mothers do their best to raise their child. They will always treat them as children even if their children are a hundred years old.

The children kin'tonis are trapped in a child’s body and do not mature over time. They behave and act like any zu'aan children despite being over a hundred years old. Orphaned children, like the original Uathy twins and ‘creators’ of the clan, Si’ri and So’ro, are taken in by guardians who look after them like their own children. One who is not related by blood but who takes care of children is a blessed soul and is highly respected. Orphans are seen as almost sacred and are like the children of Hi’ra herself because she is the Mother to all children, especially those who do not have parents.

Having a family is sacred, but those who do not have blood relatives are not shunned away by those who do. On the contrary, they are welcome as new family members or at least very good friends with open arms because refusing to form a familial or friendship bond is a sin in the Uathy religion. It is a sin for the kin'tonis only however, because the kin'tonis cannot reproduce and have a family of their own. So it is compulsory to accept everyone from the Uathy clan as a family member. Religious practices involve making and cooking big feasts and family dinners.

Those feasts involve cooking grilled bloodroot and tasty gruel for everyone. During family dinners everyone will pray at the table, thanking the gods for the food, and thanking Hi’ra for having a family to share the dinner with. The goddess, Hi’ra, is at the center of all things. Without her, the Uathy would be lonely and they thank her for having good relations with their neighbours, children and relatives. Having strong kinship bonds is highly valued in Uathy kin'toni religion. The goddess Hi’ra solidifies those familial bonds to make them unbreakable.

Another form of worship involves hugging or tapping the backs of a friend or family member. This is a way to show deep and strong affection for those who are close to the Uathy kin'tonis. It is a religious custom to hug or tap one another’s back during celebrations and it is also part of the culture of the Uathy kin'tonis. The statues of Hi’ra represent her as a goddess who hugs her children. The Uathy do the same for their family to perpetuate the affectionate culture born from a religion of love.

Miscellany

To this day, the Uathy twins, So’ro and Si’ri, do not know what happened to their parents. They still think and behave like children despite being over 100 years old. They will often ask their guardian, the female kin'toni Ar’la, where their parents are, if they are alive or not. Ar’la can unfortunately not know this and tells them that only the gods know where they are. The sad Uathy twins will sometimes cry into the night, asking the gods and the goddess Hi’ra to bring their parents back. For a hundred years they waited but their parents never came back.

They still hold on to the hope that they will see their parents again someday and that they are alive somewhere. They also sometimes think that their parents abandoned them to have a new life after they became child kin'tonis. It is very hard to lose one’s parents at such a young age and the Uathy twins often have nightmares when they sleep during the day. They are tormented by the loss of their parents and think that they have left them forever. They do not know that their parents have died a long time ago to someone in the neighbourhood. That person is still alive and has turned into a Uathy kin'toni along with all his children and family members.

That person being a kin'toni man by the name of St’or. St’or tried to protect his children from being kidnapped by the Uathy twins’ parents one night. He heard the muffled cries of his children as they were being abducted by the parents of the twins. Little did he know that they were going to be fed to the Uathy twins. But St’or acted like how any father would to protect his children. He fought the masked kidnappers and killed them with a kitchen knife. St’or was shocked to find out that the kidnappers were the Uathy husband and wife. He buried them into the night in his backyard and prayed to Hi’ra to forgive him for what he had done.

He still does not know why the Uathy parents wanted to kidnap his children, but he feels guilty for killing them even now. He wants to ask the Uathy twins for forgiveness but after more than a century he has not done so yet, too ashamed and afraid of telling the twins that he killed their parents. But St’or wants to redeem himself one day. So, he often lets his children play with the twins and treats the twins as his own kids. He even asked Ar’la if he could adopt them. Ar’la refused, being way too attached to the twins. If only the twins knew they were interacting with their parents’ killer.

And if only St’ot knew that the twins’ parents planned to feed his children to the twins. If they knew, the familial bonds would be forever broken and shattered. What would be the twins’ reactions if they found out? Would they forgive St’or or feel wrath towards him?
