Geography

The Nyslusk Mountain Ridge is a region to the South-east of the Sulysh Lake of Thousand Isles. The mountain range that used to be the Sulysh region and the smaller connected range just east of them are mountains that run along the same fault line as the Nyslusk. This gives them and the mountains in the Nyslusk a ‘fault-block’ type of formation. After its collapse, the mountains between the two locations were demolished into a rim like ridge (having lost about half their mass) that the Nyslusk mountains appear to sit on top of.

No one was around during that time though, so the violent nature of the collapse of the Sulysh and the change to the connected mountain range was lost to time. The despite the old damage to them, the mountains still reach startling heights, even with the formation of newer smaller but still quite large hills. Over the years, the surrounding areas of land were taken over and the region became ‘land-locked’. When the Burupol moved into the region, they started carving into the ridge and hills, creating mines across the region.

Some mines were extremely small, while others were so large that they had multiple temporary ‘stations’ built for the various mining leaders to stay in close proximity to the most recent work area to supervise. The mines would harvest ore along with other metals and stone that the Burupol would use in building, along with providing to the other neighboring nations. The stones were used in building temples, various buildings and wall barricades to an extent.

They would build the barricades about 3 blocks high before resorting to other materials on top due to the large amount of area that had to be covered. While not every entrance into the region, they built the walls around their cities as well as the main and easiest entrance points into the region. With the right tools and enough force though it was proven to be an ineffective design. The region’s main city sits a little south-east of the center of Nyslusk.

It was built at the base of one of the largest mountains in the region, as it acts as an indicator for any traveler where to go to as the largest landmark. In the back of the city, at the very base wall of the mountain is where the Burupol ‘meeting building’ was built for other nations who were holding parleys or negotiations there. In the center of the city, as with all the other cities, they also had their large stone Temples. There was usually a large open space if the area was accommodating enough.

Before there were various other stone buildings that were a mix of homes, shops, schools, and specialty trade buildings (such as guilds). As to avoid having to maintain the upkeep on stone paths as well as the region when it would rain could quickly result in flash flood type conditions, the Burupol instead used the stones and built each building elevated a foot or more off the ground with drainage paths carved under each building before it was ever started. The region is extremely cold in climate, due to the elevated nature.

There are a variety of waterfalls and streams though that act as the main water source that due to their running nature don’t freeze, even at the region’s coldest.

Plants

In the upper mountains, the temperatures were extremely cold, so there were very little in the way of plants that could grow successfully. One of the few plants capable of such were the svle trees. The svle are extremely large trees that look similar in appearance to a Japanese larch. The original line of svle trees had emerald-green colored needles with a deep black cone that would drop in the warmest part of the season. The changing temperatures and climate of Taerel during the Shattering age lead to a change in the trees.

A minor mutation that made the needles of the svle a golden yellow all year and the cones a pale green became more prevalent in the region. In the past there was only 1 in about every 600 or so trees that held the mutation, but the number rose to nearly half the population being the golden yellow color. The Burupol would often use the mutated needles as a yellow dye for their tapestries, and when combined with a substrate they would use the dye to make pigments for their paintings.

Other plants were also used to make paints, and then they were often traded with regions like Undtur that also made their own paints. The svle weren’t limited only to the coldest areas of the region and were often seen at the bases of the mountain range. At the base of the mountains though, it wasn’t uncommon to find lichen like plants growing on the bark. One type that the Burupol found particularly good nutrition wise for making meals- especially for the vegetarian and vegan members- was the Ksaddurru.

The ksaddurru would grow in clumps ranging from 1 to 2 inches in diameter. Each clump had around 2 dozen offshoots that would grow with a flat disk at the tip. Depending on the time of year, the discs would range from a golden orange color, a deep red to a pale blue. The blue disc Ksaddurru would grow closer to the beginning of the coldest season and would have the highest stores of nutrients to live through the winter. Other than the lichen, the Burupol would have farming plants imported every few years just incase their kept strains of the plants happened to die or mutate in an undesirable way.

Ler’ther was a common trading partner for the ground levels of the Nyslusk region, though the higher up the mountain towns had to trade with places like Sam’ome and other cold regions for crops that could survive through the coldest part of the season. Those were much harder to keep up with due to the large distance from the regions, so more often than not crops like the Beponi, Malmol fruits, and Mayc Ilolis’ were sent to the higher altitude cities for them to make their soups.

They were dehydrated and dried out so that they could store for as long as needed during the coldest period, as travel would sometimes be impossible for weeks. Also sent up with the crops was a grass like feed plant called que. que was used to feed the yari qilon when they were forced to stay in the barns due to extreme weather.

Animals

The animals of the Nyslusk region before, as well as after the Burupol zu’aan arrived, would live relaxed lives often spending extended amounts of time grazing. At the base of the mountain range, where there were more plants available, the creatures living there were almost exclusively herbivores with a handful of omnivores that still stuck majorly to the plant-based diet. There are many shepherds in the region as the Burupol believe that it builds patience, compassion and understanding in their people.

Due to this there is a large population of domesticated cattle like creatures, the most common being the yari qilon. The yari qilon were kept mainly as a source of meat- though not every burupol member who were shepherds with qilon did as there were a number of vegetarian and vegan members. The qilon ranged in color from an earthy red tone, a mid-level brown, to an ebony- all though had extremely long hair that would often obscure their eyes. In the lower levels of the region, the qilon were nearly completely passive.

This was to the point that Burupol children could run around and pull on them with no visible reaction due to a lack of predators. In the mountains though if their hair grew to cover their eyes they were extremely skittish at the tiniest of sounds, so the shepherds would often round them up by the month to trim their hair and prevent a stampede. To aid them, the shepherds also had guarding dog like creatures they named the qilon oxo. They’re similar in size and coat to a Tibetan mastiff, though they have a more similar face shape to a pyrenean mastiff with colors that matched the yari qilon.

They were kept usually in pairs, so if there was ever an instance that the herd was in danger while the shepherd was away. The two could work to subdue whatever the threat was- usually one rushing to knock the threat off balance while the other caught up to fully force or keep it down while the first circled back. When not rushing to stop a threat, they were usually lazily laying around with one alert and ‘on watch’ while the other napped. One of the birds that live near the top of the mountains is the large arrict bird.

The arrict bird has many similar qualities as the potoo bird- namely the extremely large beaked mouth that opens below their eardrums. This gives them a large almost cartoon like smile when they open their mouths. Their under feathers are white, with their main being a speckled brown similar to the mountains’ rocks- when startled they have the ability to puff out their under feathers to shift colors. This is to either confuse predators, of act as a quick camouflage when it snows. They are carnivores by nature and will hunt vermin sized prey they can swallow whole.

Due to this the shepherds higher in the mountains will befriend or keep a family line of arricts to monitor the barn structures they have for when the weather is too harsh to leave their herds out on their own. The majority of arricts though are wild though and weary of unfamiliar zu’aan or kin’toni faces as travelers through the area (as well as when they minorly migrate to the neighboring regions) would often hunt them as an exotic and strange looking trophy.
