Geography
The Nakeg dense forest is unique and stands alone in the whole of the Taerel, perhaps it can be compared with the rain forests of the Iturn Dead swamp controlled by the Ashat nation, although those seem to have been civilised and guided by the kin'toni clans of the swamp cities, the Nakeg forest is truly wild, and although there are no carnivorous plants in the forest, the unique flora and fauna of the region is still considered to be a threat to kin'toni.
In fact the casualty rate for the war against the zu'aan is the highest among all the frontiers and although in the past century it has come down siginifcantly as the troops become better suited to the terrain and adapt their method of engagement with the zu'aan of the forest, it still continues to be high. This is one of the primary reasons the Zelan kingdom’s areas were withdrawn and contract kin'toni warriors were brought in to conduct the war. The loos of precious citizens of Zelan was considered to be too wasteful.
The plants and animals of the region are larger and more ferocious than those found in the Rain forests as well, and this is predominantly due to the fact that the dense nature of the war has meant that the animals have completely been isolated from the intervention of kin'toni and have grown very territorial. It rains nearly everyday within the forest and although it is particularly hot here, during the summer, the daily rain can create a very humid atmosphere that makes breathing in the forest a difficulty.
The soil on the other hand is very infertile, in fact most plants of the region, grow some of the shallowest roots in the whole world, preferring to take the nutrients from the surface of the forest ground where the decaying forest litter provides the nutrients for the growth of the plants. The shallow roots however prevent the growth of too large trees as they aren’t able to remain upright beyond a certain point. The soil is also unique in the fact that it has found, that beneath the current top layer of soil is a layer of sedimentary rocks that are rich with placer deposits of gold.
Placer deposits are rocks formed through the process of deposition and denudation, and are usually the result of erosion by a river. Since gold is such a desirable resource, Zelan has also contracted a company of miners that are stationed in the region with the task of mining the top of the soil for the gold containing rocks in areas that have been taken over by the kin'toni mercenaries, the Mora. Since the time of their stationing, these miners have been a target for attack by the zu'aan that inhabit the forest, the zu'aan have been particularly brutal with the miner kin'toni that have been unfortunate enough to be captured.
Leaving behind the miners in bits and pieces for their empire companions to find though the clearings that were being mined. Depite the losses the mining of gold in the forest has not ceased.
Plants
As mentioned earlier, the Nakeg forest does not have any carnivorous plants but the place remains a place to be cautious about even by all the kin'toni, in particular the plants in themselves are not that particularly dangerous or life threatening for that matter, and although they can cause a lot of inconvenience, it is rare for a kin'toni to die from the wounds that are inflicted by the plants but such wounds can lead to further complications that may result in death.
In particular the plant that has been a cause for concern among the mora kin'toni is the zathutik, a very dense vine like plant that grows al through the forest but is mostly concentrated on the margins, it wraps and surrounds trees and the ground of the outskirts of the forest. The vine like plant is very difficult to distinguish from other varieties of vines that grow in the nakeg, and a slight touch of the zathutik on Nakeg skin can cause severe pain in kin'toni and leave a stubborn rash, that not only spreads quickly but is very infectious.
The painful rash can jump from one kin'toni to the other with seemingly minimal contact. The kin'toni miners responsible for the mining of the sedimentary rocks have been particularly vulnerable to the effects of the zathutik, and prior to the introduction of the technical textile gloves weaved with special material grown by the Zelan Kingdom. Now the special textile gloves are worn not only by the miners but also the Mora warriors who seem to enjoy the safety the gloves offer from other dangerous plants as well as the other poisonous animals found in the dense forest.
Another plant that is of note that grows in the dense forest is a tree that seems to become corrupted through to its core after it crosses a certain age, and as part of its lifecycle, the tree begin to fall apart. As the bark peels away and wood begins to rot, the surroundings of the tree are very dangerous for the kin'toni, for the air around these trees is rich with some kind of dust that if is inhaled leads to a very sever form of black lung disease. In this disease, the kin'toni is affected by a really high fever and tends to cough severely.
The cough I characteristic for its known to be accompanied with blood, and if the disease advances to its terminal stages, the blood being coughed slowly turns to pink tissue as bits of the lungs are torn away by the violent coughs and finally to black tissue as the lungs of the infected kin'toni begin to decay. It is absolutely one of the most painful ways to die for a kin'toni, the mora kin'toni warriors are fearless in their war but upon sighting such a tree no mora warrior would be willing to within 50 feet of the tree.
Which commonly referred to as tebth tree by the Mora. In the recent years, the proportion of these trees seems to be on the rise.
Animals
The animals in the Nakeg forest are alien and unique in their biology, they are found nowhere else in the whole of the Taerel. So much like the bright displays of the flying lizards found in the rainforests of the Iturn Dead Swamp, the fauna of the rainforest has remained isolated from other populations of the animals and so developed substantially differently from those animal populations from whence these species stemmed. The most impressive animal in the forests has been the jet black ade-yatla.
It is regarded as an amazing predator and it is highly regarded by the Mora who have taken to wearing hides of the animal while waging war, the hides once extracted from the fierce beast are coloured and a pair of eyes added to a constructed cowl, the eyes that face outwards from the cowl of the hides have become a fear inspiring element of the Mora warriors that engage the war within the forest. The Ade-yatla is the apex predator of the rainforest and hunts and kills everything that lives within it, for its gargantuan size the animal is extremely agile and light on its feet.
It climbs trees with ease and speed as if he were running vertically up them. The Ade-yatla lives in the canopy and is a patient and silent hunter, rarely does the animal need to engage in a chase in order to kill its prey, it instead chooses to follow its victim from the canopy and swoops down almost like bird, and kills its prey with its first bite. An examination of the captured and killed ade-yatlas has allowed the Mora a good understanding of the predator which over the centuries seems to have specialised to kill within the dense forest.
Like those of flying animals, the ade-yatla has hollow bones, and although they are relatively harder than those found in the birds the can be very brittle in certain places. The evolutionary cause for the animals seems to have been the need to move through the forest canopy with little trouble. The hollow bones make the ade-yatla very light and allows them to climb and fall from great heights. As stated earlier, the Ade-yatla is an apex predator, and hunts on all those who choose to set foot in the dense forest and this includes the kin'toni and the zu'aan that live within the Nakeg.
The size of the animal is what is true surprising, on all fours it can continue to tower over the kin'toni, so it is very surprising indeed when animal of its size jumps down from branches that are barely twigs. Although the ade-yatla is a challenge to deal with when the kin'toni are targeted alone and isolated, but a group of kin'toni can stand up to the animal and case it off, they may also choose to engage it but this is not the standard procedure, as a fight with the Ade-yatla would undoubtedly mean casualties.
