Geography
The Myrithal Swamp was the name given to the wetlands formed at the mouth of the Miarmat river. The river flowed into the Myrithal from the Miarma Prairie in the east and flooded out into its surrounding banks, inundating the whole region. The Swamp was surrounded by the Miarma Prairie to the east and the Pel'sun Bayou to the south. The geography of the region was dominated by waterlogged regions with a thick covering of swamp vegetation. The region was not homogeneously composed of water logged grounds and had occasional smatterings of elevated high ground that rose above these swamps.
These high grounds were fertile pieces of land that could support a wide variety of crops and were the only spots where reliable structures with solid foundations could be built. They served as spots for the development of colonies and had strategic value for both the defenders and attackers as the only spots where conventional land warfare could be fought. The Miarmat river was known as the life blood of the Myrithal swamp. Most of the transport and trade occurred along the river and it served as the only natural network that connected every major and isolated location in the Myrithal swamp.
The region was known for its humid climate year round and experienced very hot summers with mild winters. The two main seasons in the region are the summer and the mild winters. In summer, the region experienced continuous showers that could last for weeks on end and bring up the water to dangerous levels. Rainfall in the upper reaches of the Miarmat rivers could also lead to an increase in the mud and stilt deposits that the river brought into the Myrithal, turning the whole region into a muddy bog for some summer months every year.
The adequate levels of sunlight, water and continuous deposits of fertile soil from the river make the elevated grounds of the region a fertile planting ground for all kinds of crops. The situation remains the same even during the winters as the temperature fluctuations are very minimal. Crops and vegetation grow year round but the winter season sees a drastic reduction in the amount of rainfall that the region receives. The winter season is ideal for traders and visitors due to the cooler surroundings and the reduction of the muddy levels in the water, facilitating easier water travel.
Humidity and the stifling heat also subside to bearable levels in the winter. The region lacks any rock, stone or conventional building materials and has an abundance of wood and mud which form the basic materials for construction in the region. Construction in the region has not evolved beyond these simple techniques for most clans. More advanced cultures usually ship in their resources from other regions in very expensive ventures that can be a quick drain on the resources.
The warm temperatures and the presence of stagnant waters in many parts of the region make the Myrithal extremely susceptible to diseases and poisoning.
Plants
The Myrithal Swamp was home to wide variety of evergreen vegetation and many forms of tropical plants thrived in the hot and humid conditions of the Myrithal. These plants were adapted to take on the abundance of water and had a large portion of their roots sticking out of the water. The more conventional shrubberies and crops grew on the elevated surface that lay above the water levels. The most common type of plants in the region included the saybunt tree, the torom, the uskf and the nosina.
The saybunt was the most common type of tree in the Myrithal swamp. The unique appearance of the tree with their exposed roots was synonymous with the region and groves of these trees could be found lining the waterways of the region. The distinctive roots of these trees extended to about three feet above the water level and joined the thick light brown stem that rose to above thirty feet. The stems were covered in a thick layer of reddish leaves that provided much needed shade for the surface and doubled as a readily available food source.
The tree is covered in non permeable bark that limited the amount of water absorbed by the tree. The wood of the saybunt was famous for its water resistant properties and was commonly utilized for boat building and for construction of surface buildings. The torom was another type of tree that existed along the edges of the waterlogged grounds. Like the Saybunt, they had roots that extended above the water level but were routinely shorter than their distant cousins, growing to a maximum height of twenty feet.
Their stems and branches were also narrower and had lesser practical uses due to their brittle nature when subjected to pressure. They had yellowish and distinctive oval shaped leaves along with pinkish barks that were lined with dark black spots. The rare kalightos tree that grew in some spots along the Miarma Prairie can also be found in the elevated grounds of the Myrithal swamp. They were known for their large and sturdy trunk that yielded strong and water resistant wood that was a distinctive dark red in color and darkened with age.
It was the premium wood of choice among boat builders and craftsmen for the superior quality of its wood, although its widespread use was limited due to its rarity. The kalightos trees found in the region were not native to the area and were brought in by settlers from other parts of the world. The trees take a long time to mature and require very specific environmental conditions, which in turn contributes to their rarity. The uskf was a regular crop that was planted on the elevated grounds of the Myrithal swamp.
It was the subsistence crop of choice due to its survivability and ability to withstand the water logged conditions, if necessary. The edible parts of the crop were the large granules of seed that grew out of pods towards the top half of the plant.
Animals
The creatures in the Myrithal Swamp had to adapt to the waterlogged conditions of the region. Most of the animals that inhabited the region were completely aquatic or amphibious creatures that had adapted to survive in freshwater as well as the muddier and bog-like parts of the swamp over centuries. The most prominent wildlife names that crop up include the mosina, the Uuskdradan and the draw. The mosina was an amphibious predator of the Myrithal swamp that preyed on smaller lifeforms in the swamp.
A full grown mosina could measure up to five feet in length with a hefty girth of around forty inches. They had webbed feet that allowed them to move at deceptively quick speeds for their size and allowed them to surprise many an unsuspecting foe. They were more adept as predators in water as their short and webbed feet severely limit their capabilities on land. Their eyes were located directly above their oval mouth that could open to almost thrice its normal size due to its flexible jaws.
It was lined with many small razor sharp teeth that compensated for their lack of jaw power. Their skin was smooth with a brownish tint that allowed them to blend into the floor of the muddy swamp waters. The uskdradan was an aquatic creature, native to the Myrithal region. The warm and still waters of the swamp were ideal breeding grounds for these creatures and they could be found in substantial numbers all over the region. They grew to a maximum length of a foot and a half and had fleshy bodies covered by a slick scaly skin.
They were a reliable source of protein and their abundant numbers made them a favorite among most settlers and inhabitants of the region. The draw were the apex predator of the Myrithal Swamp. They were a bipedal mammal with a prehensile thumb that allowed them to make use of simple tools and climb onto the branches of the saybunt trees that lined the region. They had three inch claws that could tear into flesh and skin and cause grievous injuries to all kinds of creatures in the Myrithal.
They existed in groups and were extremely territorial- with most Draw attacks being a result of the victim's incursion into their territory. They could reach up to eight foot in height when standing totally erect and had substantial layers of fat and tough leathery hide that made them impervious to normal stabs and cuts. They were normally colored a distinctive dull green that helped them easily mask into the terrain. They normally walked around on two feed but sprinted on all fours, reaching maximum speeds that exceeded the capabilities of any creature in the Myrithal.
They were also strong swimmers who could hunt underwater. Their diet consisted of a wide variety of food including vegetation and seeds, which was quite odd considering their abilities as predators. Possessing the bones or any relic collected from a draw was considered as a prestige symbol and kin'toni hunters of the region regularly indulged in hunting expeditions.
