Geography
The geography of the hills is astounding and has been a topic of deep study by the kin'toni geologists, and they have determined that besides the Drylands, the Jau Jungle hills are the oldest of the features of the malastar world. It is certain that they are the oldest formation of the fold mountains on the continent, fold mountains are those that form upon the convergence margins of the continental plates of the world, characterised by incredible heights incomparable to other forms of mountain formation.
They are also said to be very active in terms of earthquakes due to the continued movement of the concerned plates and generally don’t involve the formation of volcanoes as little or rather none of the plates are subducted to the degree that they would result in the formation of magma. The Jau jungle hills are of note because they were nearly 10 times their current height but in the millions of years since their formation they have undergone severe erosion and deposition so as to be reduced to the level of 3 gentle hills when at one point they had been hundreds of mountains with some of them breaching nearly 13 km in height.
The heavy erosion they underwent has certainly left a very mineral rich substratum and is one of the many reasons ascribed to the resilience of the rain forest in the region, along with the incredible amount of rainfall. The rainfall of the region is due to the fact that the hills fall in between the both retreating as well as the proceeding arms of the annual phenomena of monsoon rain. These arms are laden with moisture and upon being lifted in the atmosphere, the natural lapse rate of the troposphere allows for condensation of the moisture in the air.
This is which falls as rain to the hills, this kind of rainfall is called the orographic rainfall. Although not completely unique, the jungle hills are further differentiated from other places of a similar nature by having no sides of the hills as being the leeway or the rain shadow region and this is because its not only the leading arm of the monsoon that causes the rainfall but also the retreating one which leads to just as much rain as one side as on the opposite side of the hill.
All 3 hills are connected to one another by intricate bridges at several levels by use of the tree bridges that have been so carefully cultivated by the kin'toni, and in order to circumvent the metrological challenges that hamper the easy movement of the flying kin'toni which are essential cogs of the machinery of the kin'toni government, are the pillars of bioluminescent fungi that have been gifted by the Galaka people of the drylands. There are 6 pillars of incredible length that are put up on the crest of all three hills allowing the flying contingents of kin'toni to navigate the skies above the hills even when the weather is challenging,
This is while the heights of the pillars can be raised and dropped to indicate whether another contingent is using the field of the hill in question or not. The Jau Jungle hills are among is perhaps the most important place in the whole of the landmass, it is the seat of power for the kin'toni on this landmass and the meeting place of the Council of the Pioneer Clans. The decision that govern the whole of the kin'toni people are made in the corridors of power that run through these jungles.
Formed of 3 distinct hills, and considered to be the wettest place in the world, the dense trees of the rainforest here allow the kin'toni to move about and work throughout the day and night, preventing the sun, which is the natural enemy of the kin'toni to hamper their practices. Besides having plenty of animal life for the predatory practices of the kin'toni it also differs from the swamp cities and bog towns in that the jungles are completely devoid of the carnivorous plants, and thus the kin'toni are able to build freely their establishments and habitations without any worry about their security.
The thick trees of the jungle are grown in guidance of the kin'toni that have spent the past millennia creating this natural fortress where the most important of their leaders can freely confer and deliberate upon the governance of their people. This seat of power is just as much ceremonial as it is functional, although the kin'toni polity is extremely federal in character, it adopts unitary features in certain subjects of governance, the most quintessential of which are the conduct of the war against the zu'aan and the ever essential topic of supply lines.
In these matters the jungles are the absolute authority and so it is common to see several of the flying kin'toni regularly depart and arrive, complicating the matter however is the weather pattern of the jungle hills whose near constant rain complicates the flight paths of the large kin'toni flying clans. The ceremonial importance of the jungle hills lies in the fact that these are the hills upon which the laboratory which originally produced the first kin'toni people was located, although the laboratory was destroyed and its exact location never expressly disclosed upon the orders of pioneer clans’ council,
It is still deemed to be the birthplace of the kin'toni. The kin'toni clans claim that although originating in a laboratory, they are not the creations of the zu'aan but rather a higher power and the zu'aan were only agents of this power. The birth of kin'toni came about as if nature itself wanted the zu'aan to be morphed as they were creatures that only destroyed the creations of nature and did little to preserve and propagate the natural bounties of the land. The Jau Jungle Hills are a great example of this.
Since the ascendancy of the kin'toni, the jungles have been given a completely new life, where there had been tarmac and steel before now there is wood and packed earth. The kin'toni have guided the trees in the region to form the scaffolds of their structures, and bridge the trees, they live all over the hills and all across the canopies, no cement is used in any construction on the hills, and failing trees are regularly cleared, the underbrush is managed and allowed to decay in its natural cycle.
Plants
As mentioned earlier, unlike the other evergreen forests of the land these are the only ones that have remained completely free of the presence of carnivorous plants, a fact that is emphasised for all those that complain of locating the capital in the region which is not centrally located, and whose constant rain and humidity significantly impacts and hampers the ability of the storage of paper and records which are so essential for the governance of the kin'toni people of the Erea landmass.
The species of the trees found in the region are remarkable for their malleability in that it is possible for the kin'toni to mould not only the roots of the trees which form the primary building component or rather unit of the construction of the famous bridges but also their trunks of the trees as well as their branches. The primary reason for this malleability of the plants has been theorised to be the presence of such great water content is the plants that allow their limbs to remain moist and able to bend in fantastic ways.
Whereas the roots are able to be bent and shaped due to the fact that they grow so shallowly and don’t actually need to grow too deep into the ground in order to find minerals or water, and only actually rely on them for support. The most famous of the trees found in the Jau jungle hills are called the Greenwood trees, so called due to the distinctly green lignin that is found throughout the wood and thus giving it the actual dark green colour of the leaves through all the way to the heart of the tree. T
he aged tree of this species are cut and transported to the canyon ravine which are not far from the Jungle hills, there these trees are converted into the invaluable paper that keeps the kin'toni clans functioning and effective governance ongoing. The paper formed from this trees is incredible not only for the slightly green tinge that it maintains throughout its life but also because of difficult it is for the paper to be set ablaze. The paper of the Greenwood tree is among the most precious developments of the kin'toni ascendancy, unheard of during the time of the zu'aan.
The Greenwood paper is used not only for the storage of the annual records of the kin'toni but also for the missives sent by the pioneer clans’ council to the clans that are involved in the governance of their respective regions. A greenwood missive is a important document that all clan heads dream of being the recipient of, just as much as those messengers that are honoured above all others to carry the message, unlike other messages the Greenwood missives do not change hands only that who has been selected to carry the missive must do so all alone without the assistance of any means of transports besides those of their own body.
As such it is rare for anyone but the flying kin'toni to be handed the responsibility but not unheard of, however in the past six centuries it has only been a Galaka that has carried a Greenwood missive by land.
Animals
The animals of the Jungle are many and ferocious, in these lands many a wild predators call home. The most amazing of which include the xarel-are (fanged tiger), the vastu-alak-margalad (tree climbing wild dogs) and the reacre-ade-malrie (venomous horned cobra). The most fearsome reputation is that of the fanged tiger, his hunting grounds are vast and shared only with the kin'toni, in the past these fanged tigers had been far more common in the bogs than they were in the jungle hills.
But in the past 6 centuries, the growing population of the tigers in the region led to a steady migration of fanged tigers to the Jungle hills, and although the tigers initially seemed to be unwilling to share their hunting ground with the kin'toni they have slowly had to come to terms with the presence of the kin'toni. The establishment of the kin'toni has taken an interest in the progress of this population of the fanged tigers, and they are being studied by a large group of scholars, they believe that these fanged tigers are undergoing an extremely hurried of speciation,,
As it is now clear that from the tigers found in the bogs, the venom of the tigers here is much less lethal in strength, in addition they seem to have much longer claws as well, their adaption to the jungle is likely to produce a species that would be as different from their counter parts in the bog as the kin'toni from the zu'aan. In addition to the fanged tiger, the other creature of note in the jungles is the horned cobra, a fast and venomous species of snake that lives on a stable diet of birds and monkeys, found in the top tiers of the canopy of the jungle.
The horned cobra is an incredible predator that has the capacity to bring down prey several times its size and has an incredible life span, unlike several reptiles, the cobra gives birth to live young ones and not snakes. They are very solitary creatures and although present in abundance throughout the jungle they do not seem to interact with one another except to breed. They have been very popular with the kin'toni as pets, given their very unique sense of loyalty and ability to care for themselves, they are ideal pets for the kin'toni,
All aspiring pioneer clan initiates keep a horned cobra pets as part of the millennia old tradition as begun by the founders of pioneer clans, who said that it was the presence of their horned cobra pets that helped them maintain an understanding of their role in a quickly changing world. Besides being inspired by the cobras, the initiates must learn of the responsibility involved with being a member of the pioneer clans by being able to sacrifice the lives of their horned cobras upon the day of their confirmation into the clan.
It is one of the rare ceremonies in the kin'toni world where the shedding of tears is not viewed as worthy of disapproval.
