Geography

Irarod Icy Tundra is a very hilly region, although it only contains five actual mountains. These mountains all stand alone, separated from each by several kilometres. Together the five mountains create a circle around the heart of Irarod. The area inside of these mountains is called The Haven. The five mountains are named after the seasons that occur in Irarod. These are spring, summer, autumn, winter, and the season the local Quom kin’toni clan like to refer to as Kalak. Kalak is the season that occurs in-between winter and spring where the snows begin to melt, and the local wildlife begins to emerge from hibernation.

Outside the mountains and The Haven lies the massive expanse of plains and rolling hills that makes up the majority of Irarod Icy Tundra. There are two major rivers in Irarod, both of these rivers have several smaller rivers and streams that ebb from them. The largest of these rivers flows from Mount Summer and travels down south where it continues into the nearby region of Ir’ser. This river is known as Kalaka, as it is very symbolic in the reawakening of life in the region. When the animals begin to wake up, they all venture here to get their first drink of the spring.

The second river is called the Yamata and flows from Mount Winter and travels west across Irarod and also passes into a neighbouring region. These rivers and their separate streams are what helps feed the land and nurse the region back into life. Outside The Haven the region is separated into several different sub-sections due to their being now several different bands of the Quom kin’toni clan. They each have their own territories and often clash with each over who owns what. There are four of these sections each owned by its own band of Quom kin’toni.

The first and largest of these regions is Halanka, this section is to the north of The Haven and its primary industry is mining. The band of Quom kin’toni that live here are mostly miners, and they live a tough life in the coldest and most desolate part of Irarod. This section may be the coldest in winter, but it is also the warmest during spring and summer. The second section is located to the west of The Haven. This section is most well-known for its rivers and its main industry is fishing. This is least populated section but the kin’toni that live here generally live much longer than the other bands.

This is because they can live off fish instead of kin’toni blood and can remain healthy during the winter with their heavily stocked fish stores. The third section of Quom kin’toni is located to the south of The Haven. This section specialises in lumber and is the most technologically advanced band. They live in warm huts built with the wood they harvest during the warmer months. This band of kin’toni are also the most peaceful and are open to trade with the other bands as well as clans from other regions outside of Irarod. The fourth section of the region is located to the east of The Haven. This section specialises in war.

They have the largest army and have a close relationship with the miners so they can get the metals they need.

Plants

The plant life in Irarod Icy Tundra is mostly hidden during the winter months. Besides some hardy spruce trees, one could easily think there was no plant lift at all in the region during the colder months. However, once spring begins the plants begin to appear from the white and the region is transformed. The plants in Irarod have adapted to this cycle of freezing and unfreezing and are able to survive the winters long enough to bloom in the spring.

Irarod Spruce

Irarod spruce are a species of spruce tree that are native and unique to Irarod Icy Tundra. These trees have black bark and even darker black wood. They do not grow particularly tall, but due to the lack of other large plants they tower over everything else in the region. Their leaves and small and dark green coloured. During the winter, the trees shed these leaves and go into hibernation. Their bark thickens and becomes darker. The trees winter transformation is one of the warning signs that winter is coming. The southern Quom kin’toni clan harvest hundreds of these trees and plant hundreds more every summer.

They use the hardy spruce wood to construct tools and houses as well as use it for firewood.

Irarod Wildflowers

Irarod Wildflowers are a species of flowering plant that are native and unique to Irarod Icy Tundra. These plants grow along the plains of Irarod in large groups. The flowers sprout from a central plant which is mostly underground. This is to protect the main body of the plant from frost, and also allow them to hibernate underground during the winter where the ground is covered over with snow and ice. Once the snow clears the Irarod wildflower plant extends its stems upwards toward the sunlight. These stems sprout beautiful flowers, which can be eaten by the local wildlife.

The flowers can appear in yellow, blue, red, and purple. The flowers help to make the countryside look incredible come springtime. The plant itself is light green, and beneath the ground it takes on a dark shade of brown.

Jakamn Riverweed

Jakamn Riverweed is a species of aquatic plant that are native and unique to Irarod Icy Tundra. This riverweed can be found in almost every river and stream in the region. During the summer it multiplies in massive quantities. The weed is dark green, and the tips of its tendrils are black. It can survive in the cold water of Irarod perfectly fine and provides food for many of the river creatures. The local western section of Quom kin’toni use this weed to entice fish into their traps. The eastern section uses the weed to tie their weapons together as well as make boats.

The weed generally grows on the riverbed, and to get to it the kin’toni often have to brave the freezing water. To spread its seeds the Jakamn plants roots simply release small bunches of seeds into the river current. The current pushes the seeds down until they get caught on other pieces of riverweed or rocks.

Animals

The wildlife in Irarod Icy Tundra have adapted to the massive change that occurs during the seasonal changes in the region. Just like much of plant life they mostly hibernate during the colder months. Most of local animals can be found inside the area known as The Haven. This is because this part of Irarod is the warmest and also the safest as there are little to no kin’toni living in this section.

Uiitim

Uiitim are a species of fish that are native and unique to Irarod Icy Tundra. These fish are capable of surviving being frozen for several months on end. And this is exactly what they do during the winter. When the rivers start to freeze over when autumn arrives, the Uiitim intentionally get themselves frozen. Their bodies and brains shutdown almost completely and their blood flow stops. When the ice melts the fish will drift for hours until their bodies begin to wake up. During this time, they are very vulnerable to attacks.

The western section of Quom kin’toni specifically brave the cold at this time in early spring to catch massive hauls of Uiitim. These fish are bright silver and have several red fins running along their spines. They feed on the Irarod Riverweed primarily but also sometimes prey on smaller fish.

Kalakin

Kalakin are a species of mammal that are native and unique to Irarod Icy Tundra. These animals are quite large and can grow to heights of up to two metres. They walk on all fours generally but can stand on two legs to reach the spruce leaves that they feed on. Kalakin are covered in white fur, which camouflages them during the winter, but makes them stand out during the summer. Kalakin are herbivores but they still have long claws on their front legs that they usually use to rip leaves or branches off of Irarod Spruce Trees.

These claws can also be used for self-defence. They can take a kin’toni head clean off if enough force is applied. During the winter, these creatures hibernate in caves that are located around the region. Commonly these caves are in the five mountains.

Vaskar

Vaskar are a species of predatory reptile that are native and unique to Irarod Icy Tundra. These animals are the apex predators of the region and are not afraid to remind the local kin’toni of this fact. They walk on four legs and can grow to lengths of up to three metres. They are light green in colour and walk very low to the ground, making them hard to spot when the snows have melted. Like most reptiles the Vaskar need a few hours of sunbathing before they are ready to hunt. While it is foolish to try and attack a vaskar during this time, the local kin’toni often use this period to enter The Haven.

The Vaskar scales are too thick to penetrate with kin’toni weapons but generally they only live inside The Haven. If the local kin’toni need to get into this section for whatever reason, they always come in the early morning or late at night.
