Geography

Ghaechsh Sandstone Ranges is mostly occupied by an expansive maze of towering sandstone peaks. These naturally formed mountains cover most of the region and provide shelter from the wars and events that occur further inland. The western border of Ghaechsh runs along the ocean and is much flatter and more habitable by zu’aan and kin’toni as well as local wildlife. The strong winds that come off of the ocean have stripped the coastline of any sand or other objects that are not strong enough to resist it. This leaves the area appearing very barren and hostile.

The Oceanic Union were once the most powerful inhabitants of the Ghaechsh Sandstone Ranges. They built three separate cities along the coastline of the region. The largest of these three cities was called Taevarel. The city was mostly well known for its massive harbour and how its name was similar to the name Taerel. Taevarel is located in the northern end of the stretch of flat coastal land known as the Merchants Paradise. It was the largest of the three Union cities and by far the most successful. It was them who had started the union originally.

After its destruction, the city now lies in ruin with all of its tallest towers toppled. To the south of Taevarel is the city of Katarno. Katarno was the central city of the three and was the largest trade centre during and before the kin’toni outbreak. This city also lies in ruin, although most of Katarno has fallen into the rising sea. The remnants of ships and much of the port can now be found beneath the waves. The third Oceanic Union City was called Iomos. Iomos was the smallest of the three but was the richest in minerals.

The area around Iomos was perfect for mining and contained many valuable minerals that they traded for vast quantities of money. Iomos was the first city to fall to the invading kin’toni war band that hailed from further inland. The city is no barely recognisable and their long-abandoned mining shafts contain many secrets as well as horrors. The local Mirroth kin’toni clan was eventually wiped out in a gorge located in the central part of the Ghaechsh Sandstone Ranges. This gorge had steep sides and there was only one road that lead to the bottom.

It was here the Muelm kin’toni clan slew the travelling Mirroth and burned their caravans. The gorge is most well known for the large pillar of white rock that sprouted within. It was significant to the religious beliefs of the Mirroth clan and they often visited in their travels. After the rock was tarnished with Mirroth blood the Muelm named the place, Turncoat Rock. This was due to the Mirroth’s betrayal against the Muelm. They used the rock as propaganda against any who would try to oppose or trick them in the future.

The largest lake in Ghaechsh is the Atamata. This lake is most well known for its pristine clear water. Most of the native wildlife in the region rely on this lake for their water intake. The water comes from an underground aquifer as there are no rivers in Ghaechsh. This lake was also a common spot for the local Mirroth kin’toni tribe to make camp.

Plants

In Ghaechsh Sandstone Ranges the plant life is very limited. The region has few locations that a plentiful in fresh water, and the surface is mostly comprised of stone and is not suitable for large plant growth. The wind is also strong in Ghaechsh so the plants in region are all equipped to both resist and utilise this fact.

Makkaris

Makkaris is a species of plant that is native and unique to Ghaechsh Sandstone Ranges. Makkaris grow in small crevices throughout the region and usually grow no longer than half a metre. This plant closely resembles a vine in appearance, the difference is their colour and the fact that they grow on the ground mostly. Makkaris plants are light blue, and their sheen fades to a darker blue when the sun sets. These plants can often be found in tight groups with many other makkaris. These plants do not taste very good but are edible for zu’aan as well as the native animals.

Some of the zu’aan from the old Oceanic Union cities would forage for these plants to sell them at the markets. Makkaris do not grow leaves and rather grow as a single tendril the generally grows towards the sunlight. They need very little water to survive and often get no rain for weeks on end. After the destruction of the Oceanic Union many Makkaris made their way into the ruins of the cities.

Tieras

Tieras is a species of plant that is native and unique to Ghaecsh Sandstone Ranges. These plants live and thrive around the waterholes that are dotted throughout the region, notably Lake Atamata. The are able to reproduce and spread their seeds at incredibly fast rates. Tieras are red leaved plants that grow thick yellow trunks from the moist stone and soil that can be found near the waterholes they live in. Although their trunks can grow thick, they do not grow especially tall. The largest Tieras grow only to heights of a metre and most of the plants do no exceed heights of forty centimetres.

Their leaves have been used by the local Mirroth kin’toni clan as natural bandages to assist in healing flesh wounds. The leaves contain a chemical that can assist with sealing wounds, but also makes them inedible.

Polari

Polari is a species of plant that is native and unique to Ghaechsh Sandstone Ranges. These plants are generally found on the coastline of Ghaechsh. They have strong roots that grasp onto any available nearby surface and allows the plants to resist the strong winds that hail from the ocean. Polari are shaped like pipes and the centre of their stems is also hollow just like a pipe. This lead to them to being nicknamed ‘pipe plants’ by the local zu’aan before they were defeated. The polari plants shed their seeds out of the tops of their stems and allow the strong winds to carry them extremely far.

This helps them spread their population constantly and allows them to grow in more

Animals

Wildlife in Ghaechsh Sandstone Ranges is not very plentiful or large. Here there is not much food and water to sustain any larger creatures. The environment is quite harsh on the creatures that are found here, and they have adapted to become tough enough to endure it.

Kyrtar

Kyrtar are a species of predatory bird that is native and unique to Ghaechsh Sandstone Ranges. These birds are most well known for the spikes that line their upper beak. These spikes are used to stab and attack prey to wound them and slow them down. The spikes are also used in self defence against larger predators such as kin’toni. Kytar have dull, yellow feathers and long spiked beaks. They fly low over the sandstone ranges until they locate animals walking around. This most commonly occurs at water holes and at Lake Atamata. All the native wildlife has to drink at some point, and this is why these areas are the most popular hunting grounds for kyrtar.

The largest kyrtar have been known to have wingspans of up to a metre. Kyrtar also scavenge off of dead carcases that they find across Ghaechsh. When the Mirroth kin’toni clan were slaughtered at Turncoat Rock, the kyrtar feasted for days.

Liomas

Liomas are a species of insect native to Ghaechsh Sandstone Ranges. These insects are light brown in colour and can grow to the size of a kin’toni fist. These bugs feed on the local makkaris and tieras plants. Their mandibles allow them to chew through the fibrous plant material, although very slowly. Liomas breed very quickly and are asexual, this means they do not need a mate in order to give birth to new young. Each of the young is a clone of the parent, which is why most of the species looks exactly the same with not even minute differences.

Their reproduction allows them to spread constantly throughout Ghaechsh and helps to stabilise their population numbers as they are heavily preyed upon by the Kyrtar and kin’toni as they are very edible.

Marakos

Marakos are the apex predators of Ghaechsh Sandstone Ranges. They have extremely long insectoid bodies, the upper side is lined with thick armour plates and spikes. The underside is lined with hundreds of small legs that propel these large animals’ forwards as well as backwards. Their heads are equipped with a set of four deadly mandibles than can grip large prey with incredible force. These pincers hold the prey steady whilst the poisonous stinger, which is located below the mouth, injects the target with a paralysis poison. They prey is then slowly eaten alive whilst it cannot move but can feel everything.

The largest Marakos ever discovered was found in a cave near Lake Atamata, the creature was over ten metres long and its jaws were said to be big enough to hold an entire kin’toni. This creature become legend amongst the local Mirroth kin’toni clan and many energetic explorers often revisited the cave to play with the Marakos. Despite its massive size, it was very old and quite slow and was not able to kill any of the local Mirroth.
