Geography
The Gautarl region was known for its distinctive mudflats that covered most of the coastal parts of the region. These mudflats extended inland and were known for their flat and plain appearance with very sparse vegetation. The waters of the sea would slowly enter the region during the periods of high tide when the entire region would be covered in water. Most of the waters would remain stranded in the flat terrain of the land and form large, soggy mudflats when the water eventually receded back into its natural level.
The regions located further inland were slowly rose upwards and were elevated above the flatter sections of the mudflats. These regions were free from the influence of tides and were covered in abundant vegetation including large tracts of grassland as well as forested sections covered in all varieties of tropical trees and shrubs. The terrain in this part of the region was different from the coastal mudflats and even had many zu'aan structures that could not be built in the softer ground of the coastal mudflats.
The structures in these sturdy sections of the ground were built of wood and stone while the dwellings in the mudflats were built on floating platforms made of weed and other buoyant plants. The first zu’aan settlers of the region would settle in these fertile and elevated sections of the Gautarl region where they would carry out their successful agricultural practices. The large yield of these practices was enough to feed most of their populations and also provided enough surplus to carry out their trading activities.
The Gautarl region was home to a wide variety of wildlife that was as varied as its vegetation and landscape. This included many grazing cattle that lived on the grassy lands of the interior, the amphibious wildlife of the mudflats and the aquatic animals off the coasts of the Gautarl region. The region enjoyed a tropical climate that was filled with lots of sunshine as well as tropical downpours. Humidity was very high and contributed to the uncomfortable conditions of the region. The region experienced three distinct seasons spring, summer and monsoon.
The spring season was the most comfortable of the three seasons and had temperatures in the mid-twenties. Humidity was at a tolerable level and the skies would remain clear and bright for most of the days. Most of the flowering plants would bloom during this season and add color to the landscape. In summers, the temperatures would rise to the thirties along with an increase in the humidity levels. The rise in temperatures would cause an area of low air pressure to develop over the land and would bring in winds from the sea along with some rain clouds.
Thunderstorms were a common occurrence during this period of the year. The hot summers were followed by the tropical monsoons when the region would experience continuous rainfall and overcast clouds. The humidity in the region would rise while the temperatures would continue to stay in the higher ranges. Many tropical plants would crop up all along the floors of the jungles.
Plants
The Gautarl region was home to many tropical plants that were suited to the warm and humid conditions of the region. These included many evergreen trees and shrubs as well as reeds and aquatic weeds that grew in the wet mudflats and the surrounding coastline. The vegetation in the mudflats had to be able to survive in the brackish sea waters that would flood into the region in high tide. Some of the most recognizable plants in the region included the azad trees of the inland regions, the ackees'i crops of the local zu'aan, the ormatet reeds that lined the mudflat region and the clooldler weeds that grew closer to the coastline and would wash in with high tide.
The azad tree was a tropical evergreen tree that grew in the interior regions of the Gautarl region. It was the main tree used by the Gautarl kingdom for the construction of their habitats. They produced some of the most durable wood out of the available trees in the region. The azad could grow to a height of over fifteen meters and had a very broad stem that supported its large overhead branches that were spread over a wide area. The tree also produced regular edible fruits that were consumed by both the zu'aan and wildlife of the region.
The tree retained its leaves all year round and was known for its bright green color and the plentiful amount of shade that it provided. The ackees'i was a common crop of the zu'aan setters in the inland regions of the Gautarl region. tribes such as the Dakimonoyev were known to have been successful cultivators of this crop which fed most of the zu'aan plantations in the region. The plant grew in the fertile soil of the region and was helped by the favorable tropical conditions which included a lot of sunlight, warmth and humidity.
It could grow to a length of over five feet and produced many small grains at the end of each of its stalks that was harvested and eaten by the zu'aan. The ormatet were reeds that grew in the mudflats of the Gautarl region. They grew in large clumps that were intertwined together and had buoyant properties. Floating platforms made of these living reeds were used as habitats by the zu'aan who lived on them and also used them as mobile rafts to move around in water. The reeds could grow to over three feet in length on their surface while their roots extended downwards for over two feet.
These downward extending roots served as homes and breeding grounds for many tiny fishes and aquatic animals. The clooldler weeds grew out in the seas that bordered the mudflats of the region. These weeds were fleshy and readily available and had many nutritious properties- making them the perfect diet for many mudflat dwelling zu'aan of the Gautarl. The weed had a dark green color and could grow to lengths of over three feet. These weeds would be carried into the region during the high tides when the entire ground would be covered with them.
Animals
The Gautarl mudflat region was home to a variety of wildlife that varied from the land-dwelling varieties further inland to the swamp and mud dwelling creatures of the mudflats and the aquatic creatures in the coastline. The warm conditions were favorable to many of these animals and the region would receive regular visitors from much colder areas who would migrate to the region when their own habitats became too cold. Some of the most famous wildlife of the region included the leraugh- a feline predator that lived on treetops.
The lorghalye a mud dwelling predator that resembled a hippopotamus, the achlryn- a turtle like creature that would be washed in by the tides and the large verustaw mammoths. The leraugh was one of the most iconic creatures of the region that was famed for its predatory instincts and its elusiveness. It would regularly encroach into zu'aan habitats and attack both the zu'aan and their livestock. It was known to spend most of its time atop the tree branches, where its patterned coat of fur allowed it to blend into the environment.
It was the pried target of many specialist hunters and its hide as well as its bones and teeth could fetch a fortune in the markets of the region. It was a very agile animal that could reach over five feet in length and weighed over two hundred pounds. It had sharp claws and heavily muscled limbs that allowed it to generate enormous power on its leaps and attacks. The iorghalye was a hippopotamus like creature that lived in the mudflats of the Gautarl region. It had the ability to more comfortably through the muddy and watery grounds and was one of the fastest creatures in the region.
It could grow to a length of over seven feet and weighed over four hundred pounds. It had thick leathery skin as well as sharp fangs at the edges of its mouth that could easily dismember and cause grave injuries to any adversary that threatened it. The animal had a very versatile diet and could consume all kinds of plants as well as other animals. The achlryn was a turtle like creature that came equipped with a hard outer shell for protection. It could withdraw into this shell when it felt threatened, which in turn would render it invincible to all kinds of blunt forces.
It was a purely herbivorous animal that fed on the sea weeds that were abundant throughout the region. The achlryn lived out in the open waters of the sea and would swim in with the tides to lay their eggs on the mudflats of the region. Their eggs were a vital source of protein for many of the mudflat dwelling zu'aan like the Dakimonoyev clan. The verustaw was a large mammoth like creature that could live in both the interior sections of the land as well as the mudflats of the region.
The animal was equipped with two large tusks that were primarily used for defense and a long trunk that help its nose. It stood at a height of over fifteen feet and weighed over eight hundred pounds. The animal was generally peaceful and fed on the varied vegetation of the region.
