Geography

Elmdel Fungal Jungle Hills is vast swathe of thick jungle. There are multiple small rises throughout the region hence the ‘hills’ part in its name. These rises are covered in dense trees, bushes, and vines much like the rest of the jungle. The rises can be seen from afar as the trees rise above the others on these hills. The trees on these hills can serve as good vantage points for the Elmage kin’toni clan to observe the jungle below. The largest of these rises is called Mount Tarkan by the local kin’toni and can be found in the northern part of Elmdel.

Mount Tarkan would not normally be classified as a mountain but the local kin’toni are not actually aware of how large real mountains are. They have a small outpost that has been constructed here to observe the neighbouring regions north of Elmdel. The Elmage clan are suspicious of a potential kin’toni invasion and want to have considerable prior warning if this was the case. Inside the jungle the space is quite cramped and there is little room to move freely through the greenery. The local kin’toni have created pathways through the jungle that are almost invisible until you walk onto them.

These pathways are mostly just flattened versions of the surroundings, and often the jungle grows back across them. This serves to make it more confusing as to whether or not you are still on the path or not. The local kin’toni are well tuned to this sort of thing and their strong sense of direction usually leads them to safety. It is possible to travel through the jungle normally, but it is often slow and sometimes requires any traveller to cut their way past the thick vines. The Shaka fungus covers most of Elmdel and its core can be found deep in the heart of the jungle.

The core was discovered by a young Elmage explorer who named the place after himself. Eikdale was once a lake contained within the thick jungle, but now most of the water is now gone. The core is bulbous round series of yellow and green fungal growths. The core itself is located over the remaining water of Eikdale Lake and is suspended in the air by thick strands of fungus that have latched onto nearby trees. The fungus covers every centimetre of the ground and the surrounding plant life in this area, and the air in Eikdale is packed full of spores.

Erenboros is located toward the Eastern edge of the jungle. The city still contains some of the largest buildings constructed by the previous owners. The local Elmage kin’toni clan stripped away all of the plants and fungus that had previously overrun the city in its abandonment. Their newly constructed area Taitalyae was also stripped of any fungus or unwanted plants. They seek to keep the fungus away so they can grow plants to feed the animals they have begun to farm to sustain themselves. In the centre of Taitalyae is the largest religious building in the city.

It is simply referred to as the Great Hall, and contains all of the Elmage clan’s religious artifacts and scripture.

Plants

The plant life in Elmdel Fungal Jungle Hills is very hardy and resistant to the Shaka Fungus. All the plants that could not live in harmony with the fast spreading fungus were quickly wiped out, with the exception of the plants that are farming in Erenboros. Almost all plants in Elmdel are green in colour and most have adapted to live off of minimal sunlight.

Shaka Fungus

The shaka fungus is a species of mutated fungus that is native and unique to the jungles of Elmdel. This fungus was formed by the blood of dead kin’toni flowing over it during the outbreak wars. The fungus absorbed this blood and became empowered and also changed by it. The shaka fungus spread like wildfire throughout the jungle and consumed any plants or animals that stood in its way. To spread the already fully grown fungus excretes poisonous spores into the air that latch onto nearby objects and then grow into more fungus. The fungus appears to be fluffy and can appear in a variety of colours dependent on its location.

The core of the fungus located in Eikdale is yellow but the further away from the core the fungus grows, it becomes greener. The fungus feeds off of the dead leaves and branches from the trees that grow in the jungle. It also digests the rotting remains of dead animals and kin’toni. The shaka fungus is also heavily reliant on the high amount of rainwater that is dropped in Elmdel for its survival.

Meliesse Trees

Meliesse Trees are the predominant species of tree that grow almost everywhere in Elmdel Fungal Jungle Hills. These trees are native and unique to the region, as no other regions can support their dietary needs. These trees can grow up to twenty metres in height and sprout thick green leaves for the highest branches. As each tree grows higher the leaves on its lower branches die away and regrow higher on the tree. Meliesse trees have chunky black bark that covers their brown chunks. This bark is shed every summer to reveal the trunk beneath.

The bark is actually edible for zu’aan and is useful for the local kin’toni to feed their animals. The trees can only survive in warmer climates with high amounts of rainfall. They consume a massive amount of water and the areas under them are usually the only dry spots in the jungle.

Tapis

Tapis is a species of edible plant that has been preserved by the local Elmage kin’toni clan. This plant is a thick green stalk that grows straight up and does not grow branches. These plants absorb the sunlight through the thin sheen of skin that grows over their stalk. The Elmage kin’toni clan use these plants to feed their farm animals so that they can survive. Tapis can also be eaten by zu’aan. Most of the tapis in Elmdel was killed by the shaka fungus but the Elmage kin’toni managed to save some of them and now grow them safely in Taitalyae.

Animals

The animals that have been able to survive in Elmdel Fungal Jungle Hills are almost all adapted to the unique conditions present. The Shaka Fungus is poisonous to many creatures, those that could not survive it either left the region or died. There is plenty of greenery from herbivores and not many predators are present in Elmdel, allowing the remaining species to flourish. The local Elmage kin’toni clan also farm many of these animals so they can have a steadily supply of blood to feed themselves.

Aghari

Aghari is a species of animal that is native and unique to Elmdel Fungal Jungle Hills. They have brown fur and walk on all fours. They used to have claws, but these have adapted more into feet over time. This is because the only members of this species that remain are farmed inside Taitalyae. They are not very intelligent creatures and can be easily herded around by the local kin’toni. Their meat and hides are very useful for the Elmage clan. Their hides are waterproof and make great clothing and insulation against the wet climate of Elmdel.

They are kept in small sections of fenced off area within the Erenboros walls. These areas are covered in a layer of thin netting that is designed to catch any shaka fungus spores that may kill the aghari kept inside. Aghari blood is what has sustained the Elmage kin’toni clan for the majority of their time in Elmdel.

Partoia

Partoia are bird that are native and unique to Elmdel Fungal Jungle Hills. Their bodies are covered in short black feathers and their wings are bright green. They mostly feed on the Shaka Fungus but are able to eat meat if they want to. Partoia populate the tops of the meliesse trees and construct their nests from mud and sticks. They build their nests as large circles with one entrance. They use the mud to bind the sticks and make the nest waterproof. Once Partoia find their mating partner they stay together in their nest for life. Their digestive system is able to break down the shaka fungus without harming them.

This means that these birds have an almost limitless supply of food for themselves and their offspring.

Malanaki

Malanaki are a highly dangerous species of snake that are native and unique to Elmdel Fungal Jungle Hills. Their scales are dark green so that they can blend into the undergrowth. Malanaki are also able to climb trees to catch birds and other creatures that hide there. They can move very fast, but generally travel slowly to decrease their chances of being spotted. Their fangs are short but extremely poisonous. Malanaki venom can kill an infected kin’toni in under a minute. The local Elmage kin’toni clan often use their venom on the tips of their spears and arrows.

These snakes generally grow to lengths of around three metres, but the largest one ever discovered was reported to be over five metres long. Malanaki mostly hunt at night and prefer to doze and search for water during the day.
