Geography
Edane Meadow is a beautiful stretch of undulating, fertile land covering a span of 43,127 square kilometers. It is a perpetual meadow, or natural meadow, that has been allowed to grow unchecked and unmanaged by zu’aan. The climate, soil conditions, and the animals are what really manage it. The meadow sits at a high elevation above the treeline. The outer parts of the meadow have the most zu’aan influence. The soil there isn’t as healthy due to this. The soil in the central part of the meadow, spanning about 14,000 square kilometers, is rich and perfect for the continued growth of vegetation. Thanks to its elevated location, the meadow has an alpine climate. The higher the elevation, the lower the temperature.
Summer temperatures can range between just above zero to the low fifties. This is the growing season for plants. Winters can drop to well below zero, especially during the night. Snow and rainfall are common occurrences and can both bring about several inches. It is cold and dry throughout the year. The plants of the meadow are adapted to the low temperatures and other environmental factors. The wind, while not cutting, is strong enough to carry pollen and seeds. Despite the harsh climate, there are hundreds of different species of plants, mainly flowers and grasses, in nearly every color, shape, and texture imaginable growing in the region. While there are various colors and shapes, the average height of the plants is around four feet.
The few that grow beyond that are around the edges of the region. There are a few species of trees and shrubbery that grow around the edges of the meadow, but they mostly spill out from the surrounding regions. The elevation of most of the meadow doesn’t allow much, if any, tree growth. Most of these trees barely grow to thirty feet in height. The majority of the meadow sits at the bottom of steep inclines bordering its eastern and northern points. This allows rainwater to travel through the meadow, heading down the southern and western slopes of the region. There are a few small ponds scattered around the region, most of which are only around thirty to forty feet in diameter and about ten to thirty feet deep.
While there are some aquatic animal species surrounding and even living in the pond, there are no fish. The majority of animal life attracted to the meadow are pollinating insects or grazing mammals. There are a lot of small mammals that attract birds from nearby regions, but there are no native birds in Edane. The An’ar tribe built their settlement in the southern side of the meadow, where its mostly open plain. They chose this location to keep as much of the meadow undisturbed by them as they can. As they aren’t advanced builders, the mostly flat land was easier for them to build their homes on. While the open region does allow them to see the enemy coming, it also doesn’t offer any protection either.
It also doesn’t offer much protection from the elements of the meadow.
Plants
Plant life in the Edane Meadow is varied and adapted to the harsh alpine climate. More grows towards the center of the region as there is less zu’aan influence there. Most of the plants are species of flowers and grass. Cosmia, or whistle blooms, are average-sized flowers native to the region. They grow up to just over a foot tall, with a thick, purple stem that’s almost three inches in diameter. Large, light blue leaves with three points and smooth edges grow at the base of the stem. Flowers of varying sizes grow up the stem. They can be anywhere from two inches to eight inches wide. Their white and dark blue petals are about half and inch thick and curve upward to form a sphere.
There are oval-shaped cutouts on the sides of each petal in the middle. The size of the cutouts are determined by the size of the petals. The bigger flower heads grow at the bottom of the stem and they get smaller as they go up. There are usually around six flower heads per stem, and usually two dozen cosmia can be found growing around each other. They got their nickname due to the whistling sound it makes when the wind blows through its petals. The size of the flowers determine the sound that comes out. The blank tribe use the flower in ceremonial events like weddings and funerals. Talented zu’aan string several of them, of all sizes, together so that a melody can be made.
They close up during the winter and bloom during the summer. They are inedible and have no medicinal benefits. Uxina are large flowers native to cold regions. They grow to almost four feet tall, making them one of the largest plants in the meadow. Their white stems grow in bunches of five and are wispy with a curved tip. Long, thick, silvery blue leaves with rounded edges grow at the base of the stem. A single, medium-sized flower sits at the end of each stem. The flower heads are around seven inches wide. Their golden and purple petals have diamond-shaped ends that curve upwards to form an open bowl shape. There are around thirty petals per flower head. They can be found growing all over the meadow, and will usually have around three dozen growing around each other.
They have a light, floral scent that gets stronger in the summer. They are edible and have medicinal benefits. When diluted a bit with water, the oil within their leaves can calm nausea, soothe sore throats, and relieve muscle pains. The oil can’t be ingested raw, it has to be diluted. The petals can be made into a paste to help speed up the healing process of cuts and burns. Eshac is a unique grass, native to the region, that can grow up to a foot tall. It is made up of thick, light purple, six pointed stalks that grow in extensive patches that can overwhelm an area rapidly. They bend slightly at the ends. When mature, the end of the stem eventually transforms into a large, bright blue puff. Eshac is both edible and has medicinal benefits. It has a slight minty taste and can be used to treat fevers by steeping it and drinking it. Putting it over a fire and inhaling the smoke it releases can treat nausea, stop headaches, and even help with insomnia.
Animals
Animals in the Edane Meadow are also adapted to the harsh climate. The meadow attracts pollinating insects and grazing mammals. Most of the mammals have fat and thick fur in order to stay warm in the cold weather. There are a few that hibernate throughout most of the winter and some that don’t hibernate at all. The animals are a part of the managing forces of the meadow. Falcish are a species of herbivorous, grazing mammal. At an almost five feet shoulder height, they are one of the largest animals in the meadow. They aren’t native to any one region, but they do prefer the colder ones. They have six legs and a short tail. Their thick skin is covered in thick, white and blue fur.
Their small, slanted, yellow eyes make their vision poor, while their large, pointed ears enhance their hearing. Their blunt teeth and wide tongues aid them in their grazing. Their heads are long and wide. A silver horn sits in the middle of their forehead. Their herds are made up of between six to twelve. They mate within their herds about once a year and females can give birth to around two young. Falcish are docile and usually friendly towards zu’aan. They panic and lash out in the presence of kin’toni. Mosena are a small and invasive species of invertebrates. They are about five inches long, with thin, black bodies, two winged arms, two legs, and a short, thin tail.
Their fan-shaped wings are wide, almost three inches, and a mix of silver, purple, and blue. Their heads are long and narrow, with two sets of wide, round, black eyes that give them good vision. Mosena are a highly invasive species with only a few natural predators that keep them under control. They are also a pollinating species. They live in large colonies of several hundred, and can be found all over the meadow. There are usually three to four queens per colony, and each queen can lay up to two hundred eggs. While they are invasive, they are a relatively docile species. They’re herbivores with diets consisting mainly of leaves and grass. Kreasmite are small invertebrates native to the region.
They are only about four inches long, making them one of the small animals in the meadow. They have rounded, rectangle-shaped bodies covered in a thin, dark blue with yellow spots, armored skin. They have four legs, two arms, and two sets of almost translucent, purple wings. Their wings are about six inches long. Two pinchers come out of the sides of their round heads and a stinger sits at the end of their tail. They have four sets of small, black eyes. Kreasmite are dangerous for zu’aan due to the venom they have stored in their stingers. One sting can cause paralysis as it slowly works through the system, shutting down organs and poisoning the blood. A young kreasmite has enough venom to kill a fully grown zu’aan.
The fatality rate is almost ninety-five percent. If the venom is removed in time, the chance of survival is around fifteen percent, but there will be after effects like permanent paralysis or constant, burning pain at the bite site. They are highly territorial and can usually be found around the ponds as that is where their females lay their egg sacs of almost a hundred. They are also one of the few carnivorous animals in the meadow and feed on pretty much any insect, like the mosena.
