Dewidln Oasis
History
Historical Overview
Dewidln Oasis is situated in the region now known as Swudra Wasteland, which was once a fertile, warmly temperate region of plains and forests, watered by several rivers. For these reasons, Zu’Aan heavily settled and cultivated it. Prior to the fall, it held several important Zu’Aan cities, the largest being Zatarrina, a metropolis with a sprawling suburban area in the eastern part of the region. At the time, the Zu’Aan in this nation had developed advanced hydroponic technology for growing crops and had therefore allowed large areas that had previously been used for agriculture to revert to idyllic wilderness. Among these wild areas was a huge, primeval-seeming forest just east of Zatarrina.
At that time Dewidln was not an Oasis but a big pond without a name, it was a side of the road and the surrounding land had plenty of trees, flowers, and grass growing from the rich soil. A geologist that examined the pond found traces of useful mineral resources, the discovery attracted a mining company that settles a mining camp near the pond, with lots of vehicles and machines. When the Kin’toni infection manifested itself, the government in Zatarrina panicked, evacuating nearly the entire population of the region, then blanketing Swudra with atomic and hydrogen bombs in an attempt to wipe out the Kin’tonis. The entire region became a wasteland, the complete area is just sterile sand and stone, half of it is radiated.
Before the bombing Dewidln Oasis used to be a discharge deposit for a mining company that used the water pressure to get minerals and the constant water flows made fissures on the floor, almost as a low depth lake, there was a camp where the mining workers lived before evacuating the site; since it was erased by a hydrogen bomb the radiation in the zone is less than other parts of Swudra Wasteland, as the rest of the wasteland it is flat, dry, sterile, arid, even the roads disappeared. Some months after the bombing an airplane of survivors made an emergency landing on the site, the sand reduced the impact and there were no casualties, the passengers tried to fix the plane however it was beyond any repair, they were stuck in the middle of nowhere.
The survivors had supplies enough for a week, after that they would be in trouble, the engineers and scientists in the group had to find a solution that saves them of die of thirst and starvation. Some way old equipment of technology to irrigate crops was found in good conditions inside the mine with other useful machines. Combining the found machines with experimental terraformation devices in the plane let the survivors fill the void in the ground with chemically produced freshwater until made a lake that was named as Dewidln Oasis. In that years the freshwater let the survivors settle a city, let plants and animals grow and it is enough to bring life into an area of 40 square miles.
For centuries the water production device has been slowly breaking down, even though it is fixed partly from time to time. The device is slowly failing, kept working by jury-rigged fixing. How long will the device hold out before it fails and the desert sands reclaim the Dewidln Oasis?

Geography
Dewidln Oasis s a fertile area in the middle of an arid and eroded environment, it provides habitat for a zu'aan city named Cledwlen, a considerable numerous population, animals, and plants. It is made fertile when sources of fresh water, such as underground rivers or aquifers, irrigate the surface naturally due to the winds bring water clouds. The presence of water on the surface or underground is necessary and the local or regional management of this essential resource is strategic, but not sufficient to create this area: automatic work of zu'aan technology and know-how (a technical and social culture) is essential to maintain such ecosystem. Ironically the Swudra Wasteland is not a natural formation, however, Dewidln Oasis was a natural formation from first, just not like an Oasis but another water body.
It was made by a complex oasification operation in a desperate attempt to survive. The oasification technique has limited application and is normally considered for much smaller areas than those threatened by desertification. To help the oasification process, engineers aim to develop a thriving dense woody plant cover to redress the hydrological, edaphic, and botanical degradation affecting a slope. This is done through appropriate soil preparation and the introduction of suitable plant species. It is also necessary to make adequate water harvesting systems, ideally taking advantage of the degradation process of the slope, collecting runoff water in ponds around the sites to be forested.
In oasification, soil and nutrient harvesting are regarded as fundamental component parts in the reclamation process of a degraded slope. Besides harvesting water, oasification preserves and accumulates soil and nutrients, helping to control water erosion, a common problem in dry climates. The oasification of Dewidln Oasis was not planned from first, it was made by adjustments and joints of different agricultural irrigation systems and applied terraformation. The oasification system works by absorbing oxygen particles from the air and hydrogen particles from mineral sources. The particles are stored in a quantum chamber that individually joints oxygen and hydrogen particles to obtain H2O, chemical pure freshwater that is incorporated into the oasis ecosystem.
Dewildn Oasis will be a fertile tract of land while the technological supply of fresh water is available. Underground water sources, springs, and wells, some of them artesian, are supplied by the terraformation device that produces chemical freshwater by absorbing separate particles of oxygen and hydrogen to join them, at the same time part of the hydrogen particles it stores are used as fuel to keep the machine working. Rain showers provide subterranean water to sustain the water body. Substrata of impermeable rock and stone can trap water and retain it in pockets, or on long faulting subsurface ridges or volcanic dikes water can collect and percolate to the surface. Any incidence of water is then used by migrating birds, which also pass seeds with their droppings which will grow at the water's edge forming an oasis.
Swudra Wasteland has 190,000 square miles, Dewidln Oasis is 25,000 miles to the west from the center of the wasteland. There are not adjacent places, not roads or paths, not even near places to Dewidln, in any directions, there is just a large area of continuous sand dunes. The soil used to be flat, it only changes with the movement of the sand dunes dragged by the wind. There is no other place visible in the distance, only sand and rocks. The city of Cledwlen is located in the surroundings of the oasis, its habitants can survive in the middle of sterile sands thanks to its freshwater. The city has a total area of 29.1 square miles, all land, including crops. It shares the territory of the Oasis, Dewidln has 40 square miles; the water body has a surface of 2.39 acres.
It is not very deep, the average depth is 9–12 ft, and the deeper zones have 18 ft depth inside the middle and northern borders of the oasis. Due to the water in the oasis is produced chemically it is very pure and transparent, it´s possible to see at the bottom and any object below. The water is absorbed by the sand and distributed in a radius that lets many plants grow, although not enough to form superficial water streams. The evaporation of the water makes it possible to have one or two cloudy days a month. The zone has not notable elevations, the highest points are caves of 5 ft tall. Most of the terrain is flat with the same elevation but small differences in the dunes, with essentially the same subtropical desert characteristics.
On average, temperatures reach 100 °F (38 °C) on 90 days, 90 °F (32 °C) on 155 days, and the freezing mark on 24 nights annually. Extremes range from 10 °F (−12 °C) on December, to 118 °F (48 °C) on July. Winters are moderately cool, with highs in the 60 °F (16 °C) and the lows in the 40 °F (4 °C), such temperature don´t allow snow to appear. Summers are hot, with temperatures above 100 °F (38 °C). The rainiest month is August with .8 in (20 mm) inches of rain, mostly from monsoon thunderstorms. The nights are very cold, especially when there is wind running, reaching 6.8 °F (-14 °C). The soil types are mostly derived from volcanoes, the superficial fertile soil from past days was blazed by the bombing.
As the topography goes down, particle sizes decrease as you move down the gradient, where you can also find low alkalinity. It is not a natural forming wasteland, there is no favorable conditions for living forms beyond the 40 square miles of Dewidln Oasis. The terrain is solid, easy to dig, the layers of stone are very deep. There are not underground formations out of the mine. Inside the mine there are artificial tunnels dug by machines, the tunnels reach 30 ft depth and 21 ft length, they are utilized as research facilities.
Plants
Despite the technological source of freshwater seems limitless, people who live in Dewidln Oasis must manage land and water use carefully; fields must be irrigated to grow plants like xiral (like apricots), calaya (like dates), sherel (like figs), and xlkai (like olives). The most important plant in the oasis is the ogival palm, which forms the upper layer. These palm trees provide shade for smaller trees like peach trees, which form the middle layer. The ogival palm has a red fruit that grows below the leaves, it has an ogive shape, below the hard cover it is edible and it is filled of juice. By growing plants in different layers, the farmers make best use of the soil and water.
Many vegetables are also grown and some cereals, such as cnak (like barley), vaerea (like millet), and yatal (like wheat), are grown where there is more moisture. In summary, an oasis palm grove is a highly zu'aan activity and irrigated area that supports traditionally intensive and polyculture-based agriculture. The climate let the crops grow fast in big size, it´s harvested in almost the half of time than other environments, this big amount of production is only possible due the big water supply used to irrigate the crops. The oasis is emancipated from the wasteland by a very particular social and ecosystem structure. Responding to environmental constraints, it is integrated agriculture that is conducted with the superposition of two or three strata creating what is called the "oasis effect":
The first and highest stratum is made up of palms and maintains freshness; an intermediate stratum includes fruit trees (orange, banana, pomegranate, apple, etc.); the third stratum, in the shade, of herbaceous plants (market gardening, fodder, cereals). In Delwidln Oasis there are many plants growing: gardens full of tall palms, fruit trees, grass, and flowers; however there is not variety, the plants are of the same types since originally there was just arid soil and the only seeds were carried by the survivors of Cledwlen City. They had no plans to settle in the middle of the wasteland, they sowed the grains and seeds they got from their food supplies. Due to the extremely harsh and dry conditions, the plants have evolved in isolation because of physical barriers.
They have adapted to have succulent leaves, with spines, buried bulbs, hairy or waxy leaves, photosynthetic stems, deep taproots, and ephemerals. Plants can´t grow beyond the oasis area due there is no other water source, during the raining season some seeds can grow in the sand, however the soil dries fast and the young plants end dehydrated. There are plants which seeds were not brought by the survivors of Cledwlen City, but migrating birds that found the oasis and visit it one or two times during the year. Those seeds grown fast in the oasis zone, blooming as blue cactus with orange thorns; small palms of the size an umbrella; vertical palms of 4 ft that looks as red hand fans; wooden mushrooms that let rounded small mushrooms grow below the hat; and yellow fluffy plants that can be used to produce cloth.
Animals
The original fauna living in the zone was blazed by a hydrogen bomb. After the bombing there was no life signals animal or vegetal, not even microscopic. Months after the bombing an airplane of survivors made an emergency landing on the site. The survivors were carrying domestic animal with them, Fynra´nis, myzarts, and Chees. The fynra'ni, which are feline animals, prefer to be inside the houses of the Cledwlen City habitants and go out during the night; the myrzat. often recognized by its dog-shaped face, cat-like whiskers, pointy spines, and strange cockatoo-like sounds is a popular pet; the chee, that is a canine fox-like has less exemplars but it´s a pet too. Inside underground caves dug by a mining company is possible to find insects like txhi worms, vtaus, egu´tis and yatuis.
Txhi Worms are unusually large worms that crawl inside the caves and have surprisingly spiny backs despite having the look of a centipede; vtau is a caterpillar-like., not safe to eat; egu'tis are large beetle like animals that are covered in black chitinous armor that is very hard to break; and yatui grubs are small, fat, and sweet grubs. The zu'aan survivors formed the Dewidln Oasis combining the found machines with experimental terraformation devices to fill the void in the ground with chemically produced freshwater. The Oasis attracted migrating birds like yirks, wovocs, yzgunns between others. The yirks being black and yellow, smaller in size males between 30–37 cm and females from 35–40 cm, producing high pitched mating calls and little yellowish eggs with brown spots.
Wovoc is a large winged bird with surprisingly durable feathers, and yzguun is a bird that has a feathered set of wings with but since their wingspan is around 10 feet access just flapping their wings fast enough should help them ascend from the ground. These birds fly miles of distance to get to the oasis, build nests, and set eggs, once the chicks can fly they migrate out of the oasis crossing the wasteland. Another bird that can be seen is the karidaa, a bird that eats eggs and dead meat. It has light blue feathers and colorful wing feathers, it came attracted by the eggs of the other birds. There is also livestock cattle living in the oasis, farmed and cared by the Cledwlen citizens, the abundant herbs and grass is food enough for those herbivores.
In the airplane the survivors were carrying some buwllais, they are a kind of wild large bovine creatures, they would be used for experiments, and the survivors changed plans since they would never arrive to the destination laboratories. The other kind of cattle are lidimis; the lidimi is a 5 ft quadrupedal animal with long legs, long tail, long ears and long neck, with fluffy furr around its body (it´s like half horse, half rabbit). The airplane was not carrying lidimis, a pack of them came crossing the wasteland, and the animals were lost, abandoned, or escaped however they seemed to be costumed to zu'aan touch. The lidimi is used to ride and carry heavyweight, it can be ate too.
