Geography
The Catalvar City is in a mountainous region that is near the centre of its landmass. The entire region is covered by thick forests that do not shed their leaves in winter and the region has very few open areas but for the ones made by the local kin'toni. This region is very cold in its long winter and is cold in the spring and fall. The summers are short and somewhat warm. The region has lots of snow in the winter and lots of rain in the spring and fall, the summers are very dry. There are known to be much in the way of strong winds at times in the winter.
Covering most of the region are the forests of Nasuu-ai, known for their very tall yau trees that have bright green leaves and many-coloured bark. The trees are very thick but for the few clearings that have been cleared by fallen trees. The forests of Nasuu-ai are around eighty square miles in size. The forests cover the hills and the bases of the mountains that surround this region. The range of mountains that surround the region to the north is called the Endes and beyond that is the cold region of the Eaten Flesh Tundra. The Endes is known to be riddled with caves that allow access to the region beyond.
The range to the east is called the Sana Mountain Range. Beyond the Sana Mountains is the region of the Icy Hills of Jakyla, to cross the Sana Mountain Range, there is one of a number of tortuous high passes that are often impassable due to the snow. The safest and most used pass is called the Calaia Pass, it is often used in the spring and summer after the ice melts. It is closed for the late fall and winter of the year. This pass is around three miles long and passes at an altitude of over one thousand feet near Mont Shina. This pass is marked with piles of stones and leads to the heart of the region beyond.
In the far south of the region, there is Lake Yaavvu. This long, but thin lake is a flooded valley that is three miles deep and around five miles long. Flowing into this lake is the River Lia, this river is around fifty miles long and flows from the steams of Mont Shina. This lake has clear blue water and is connected to the sea via the River Ia, a river that is over thirty miles long and flows downhill through the Wytal Boreal Forest region in the south. The heart of the region is known to have a clearing once used for meetings with the local kin'toni clans.
The city itself sits on the side of a large hill made of volcanic rock called "Anarath'Te". This hill is around five hundred feet tall and has very steep sides. The city is surrounded by high walls made of the same rock and the buildings are too.
Plants
Plants of this region include the Daquo Tree, which has sap called yuwu that the Cutiausk kin'toni Clan use to sate their thirst. The sap is a dark golden colour and is very thick. These trees are around fifty feet tall with a canopy span of around thirty feet and roots that go around fifty feet around the tree and deep into the ground. The leaves are dark reds, browns and golden in colour and are oval-shaped. These trees have a soft dark brown wood that is used for building by the local kin'toni. The tree sends its seeds in the form of nuts that take around four weeks to sprout in the right conditions are can live for a long time without water.
Another plant is a type of parasitic vine that grows on daquo trees. It is dark brown in colour and has light red leaves, the small and many-petaled flowers are light purple. The vine grows to around thirty feet long and an inch thick. It spreads its seeds by animals that eat its dark purple fruit that is roughly ovoid in shape and weigh around once each. This plant lives around ten years at the very most and tolerates the cold well. This plant is used by the local kin'toni as thick rope and is used to make mats and blankets. The fruit, the local kin'toni use to make wine with.
Another plant is a form of grass-like plant called the rava. These plants grow well in the shade of trees. It is a dark red in colour, but some plants are lighter red in colour. It grows around five feet long and is able to grow very fast. This plant can not live through the cold winters. Each year in the fall, these plants send their seeds to the wind before they die. The seeds sport in the springtime and take very little time to grow. The local kin'toni use this plant to weave clothing out of it and use it for decoration and thin ropes. This plant is very common across the region and used as a food source by many animals.
Another plant are small flowering plants called vaia, these plants have dark red or dark gold flowers. The leaves are light red and are able to regrow fast if eaten. These plants flower once a year and then die, but not before spreading their seeds on the wind. These plants are unable to live through the cold winter. These plants are a food source for small animals such as the erva. Like the rava, the seeds sport in the springtime and take very little time to grow. The local kin'toni use the flowers as decoration in their homes and to make dark red and gold face paints with. Face paints are used in religious rites.
Animals
In this region there are large-winged creatures called xytils that have many layers of skin which is surprisingly durable and strong. They have a long scaled body and no limbs but for their wings. Their heads have many sharp teeth and a crest of skin that can be raised or lowered. They are carnivores and they eat small animals called erva. Xytils are around five feet long with a ten-foot wingspan and they weigh around thirty pounds. They live alone for most of the time, but for when raising a brood. In the mating season, they find a mate by elaborate displays, involving their brightly coloured wings and elaborate dances involving head-bobbing.
These animals lay three to five eggs that need to be incubated, cooler eggs come out as female and warmer eggs come out as male. The young take around a year to be able to fend for themselves and live for around ten years. Another animal that lives in this region is the erva, these are around a foot long and weigh around a pound. They are small-scaled animals that have four limbs and a long tail that can break off when chased to allow the erva to get away. They live in large family groups underground. In the mating season, males fight each other females to gain as many as possible to mate with.
Females have around three young at a time that takes around four weeks to be able to fend for themselves. They live for around five years at the most. These animals eat the grasses and nuts that are common in this region. They are seen as vermin by the kin'toni that live in this region. Another animal is called the sheree. This is a large animal that has a very long neck to be able to reach high branches for leaves. It is around ten feet tall and five feet long and weighs around two hundred pounds. These animals have smooth, thick skin that is dark mottled green in colour for camo. They mate for life and have one child a year that takes three months to be able to care for themselves.
This type of animal lives for around fifteen years. These are hunted for food by kin'toni in this region. There are also moderate-sized animals in the underground caves which they find and take care of called myrzats. A myrzat is often recognized by its dog-shaped face, cat-like whiskers, pointy spines, and strange cockatoo-like sounds. It is at times one of the smartest animals in the wide spectrum of animals of the Terael kingdom as they are often able to recognize and repeat certain phrases. When scared they will walk upright in a seemingly drunk fashion. They feed on the many cave mushrooms that grow in caves in this region.
