Historical Overview

Bysctzwer Lush Desert is a region of unusually lush desert land located in the southern hemisphere of Taerel, on the Zelan landmass. It is a scarlet reach of sandy dunes permeated by pale grass and dry reeds, orange wood trees, and wild cacti blooming into exquisite flowers. This region has remained non-inhabited for quite a large portion of Taerel history, but it has served its use as an ancient travel road between surrounding nations, and it has been a part of zu'aan history for as long as there has been such a thing. The earliest records of this region in written manuscripts dates back to the middle of the Copper Age, during the 11-12th century, where a growing civilization east of Bysctzwer details, in cuneiform, a dry, desert-like region that was then symbolically associated with the pictograms for road, trade, carriage, and travel, among some others.

This is thought to have been eluding to the Bysctzwer region and the fact that it had been used as a trade road between regions of this area. It is also believed that this trade road had been used a long time since its first discovered mention in written text, as when it was written it seemed to have already been established as a trade road. Archeological evidence is inconclusive, as the Bysctzwer region is highly covered in sand, for obvious reasons. In any case, it wasn't until the Bronze Age that the first settlers are thought to have built the start of eventual civilization within Bysctzwer. At this time, they would have been somewhat equipped to thrive in a desert environment, especially one with such abundant vegetation, and therefore some level of rainfall, as Bysctzwer Lush Desert.

Even so, it is believed from records that these first settlements, which started in distinct, small agglomerations, were created as transient colonies for a variety of political or resource specific reasons. Over time these would grow, as more people would join and later generations would, seeing the place as their home, have a strong wish to remain, and civilization would ensue. By the start of era 2, there are thought to have been 13 different colonies inhabiting the desert, some of them associated or coming from the same nation, with a total of 6 separate nations involved in the colonization process. All of these would eventually either band together with others, disappear, or develop their own independence and individuality as a nation.

By the Ancient Age, there were 9 independent nations ruling over the large Bysctzwer region. Each of these was small and lacking in individual power, so they did not survive on their own for a very long time. However these small nations, prideful in their survival away form their original homes in this desert landscape, did not like the idea of grouping together, so they kept disbanding and disappearing, and creating new nations on top of old ones, perpetually, consecutively, in a never-ending passive war game that was helpful to anyone. Eventually, as of the modern ages, only a few of them remained, and modern views brought them along to cooperate. However this would be short-lived, as the kin'toni outbreak would soon rule the world.

Geography

Bysctzwer Lush Desert is a stripe of arid desert land, unusually lush with wild plant life, located in the southern hemisphere of Taerel, on the upper portions of the [] landmass. It does nor border on any sea or ocean, and has been mainly used throughout history as a means of connecting other nearby surrounding regions. It is mainly comprised of arid land, though, through natural and otherwise means, many of this arid land is occupied by either flora and fauna that has adapted to the dry atmosphere and is biologically ready to withstand such an enviromnent, or by other plants and animals that, by force of destiny, ended up in these hostile lands and, through mutual help or simply by luck alone.

As well as stringing together their evolutionary traits that perpetually called for survival, managed to survive and even thrive over the years in the region known as the Bysctzwer Lush Desert. As said previously, the region does not border on any overarching water bodies, but does contain a few minor lakes and mini-rivers which partake from these lakes. These areas are few and far in between and considerably small in scale. They are, however, constanly subject to the wills of the land, as surviving as a water body in a desert environment is by no means an easy burden, and many of them have either dried up or even formed in completely different places out of nowhere over the ages.

There is also a small subset of underground water reservoirs through the region, but due to the dry nature of the land, these are very small and unremarkable. The climate in Bysctzwer Lush Desert is dry and hot, leaning towards moderate due to the plentitude of flora and fauna but not enough to quit being a desert, making it a very arid region still. As such, it fails to attract much rain asides from small amounts of yearly precipitation that come from its lakes naturally. Of course, due to the high temperatures, these already tiny bodies of water would not normally be allowed to even exist, so the flora has taken it upon themselves, over many years of evolutional trial and error, to cover these spots in overarching shade, keeping them cool and off the sun.

As such, they have been allowed to exist, and the only evaporation that occurs does so due to the air temperatures during the day, rather than direct sunlight exposure, which does help keep it at a low, while preserving the odd lush desert type habitat. Temperatures are warm year round, with spikes in summer and lows in winter. As in most desert habitats, nights are incredibly cold, as sand does not preserve almost any heat at all, and the air is very dry. There is no snow, no hail, barely any dry or otherwise storms, and the winds can be quite strong during the hotter seasons, though hurricanes are uncommon in this particular region. Earthquakes and other natural disasters are also unlikely to happen.

Plants

Plant life in unnusually diverse in Bysctzwer, being consistent of some species of trees, bushes, shrubs, cacti, tall and short grass, and even some vines. Plants that would not normally be able to survive in a desert environment have come to thrive in Bysctzwer due to the presence of others, in what can only be described as a cascate event. To put it simply, the climate in Bysctzwer has by some means attracted, at an early stage, a large amount of arid plant life, such as cacti, dry grass, and some shrubs. This plant life would normally not be enough to warrant more plant life to move in, however in Bysctzwer, again, by some means, it managed to reach a certain population grade that other plants.

That would normally not be seen in these arid climates, found themselves able to survive amid the others. Clusters of flora create very small and isolated sub-biomes, akin to the manner in which a terrace or lawn creates a unique biome for insects, and as such other plants are able to move in, despite the sub-biome being located within a larger, dry, hostile biome. After these initial plants move in, likely short trees and larger shrubs, as well as some lusher kinds of grass, other plants are also able to move in, such as tall bushes, palm trees and others, flowering plants, and tall grass. Flowering specimens and roots are less common but can be found in some clusters.

As stated previously, the bulk of these settlements is found around the small water bodies spread around Bysctzwer, forming shade on the water, which in turn protects it and allows it to feed the plants. This has allowed for the formation of a very small regimen of water based plants, which live inside of these tiny habitats. These are, once more, rare and few. In any case, most plant life is found around these water regions. In between these, the ground is more arid and plant life is more sparse, being largely made of the early settlers we discussed - dry grass and cacti - while the lusher forms of plant life remain always close to water. These water bodies, however, are prone to disappearing, as we discussed earlier.

Despite the shade provided by some tree life, the air temperature is still very hot, and sometimes the humidity provided by the plants is not enough to fight natural evaporation. As clouds are sparse and thin, rain is also less likely to return to these small bodies of water. As such, they are prone to disappearing. Notably, however, their disappearance does not translate into the disappearance of these small sub-biomes. It is worth mentioning that while most of the soil in Bysctzwer is made of very dry earth, either arid land or proper sand desert, the terrain around these water bodies, especially the ones that have existed for a large amount of time, has a degree of healthy, fertile soil in it; actual brown earth.

This allows the earth, even after these water bodies are gone, to retain moisture through the constant fertilization it receives from the plant life. So even after they're gone, it is able to remain alive. Of course, this process does not keep it alive forever, and we can see a clear decline over the years in these sub-biomes after the disappearance or shrinkage of water bodies, but it is a helpful tactic for the case they are refilled, which often happened at the hands of the local zu'aan. Life in Bysctzwer is a constant fight of nature, between the forces of desertification and the plants that struggle to live. Zu'aan have certainly made the burden a little lighter, but nature beckons still, and the future of Bysctzwer, much like the future of the zu'aan, is uncertain.

Animals

Animal life in Bysctzwer is mainly consistent of insects, a population that serves to uphold and survive alongside the lush plant life. There is a small variety of mammals, reptiles, and very few birds species, as well as some variants of tiny fish. Insects however take hold of the major population, as they do in most biomes. Here are a few examples of species unique to Bysctzwer, and their relationship with the wildlife: Krokaaht, a four legged arthropod with a long appendage on its back, which it uses to feed on fruit, berries, cacti and sap from stalks. This tiny insect can grow up to two inches wide, and is commonly found hanging around dry shrubs and tall grass. It is light brown, the color of wet dirt, and has black streaks throughout its body.

It only has four legs, something a bit odd to find in an insect, a thin torax and abdomen, a large oval head with small pincer jaws, and an overhanging appendange on its back, similar to a tail, with a claw at the end that can divide itself in four. It uses this claw appendage to penetrate the skin of fruit, berries, vegetables, or anything with a soft interior, and absorbs the nutrients within. The appendage has a canal that produces strong destructive enzymes capable of turning the sucked in contents into a fine liquid, which is then consumed by the krokaaht. It also uses this same appendage to puncture cacti, in order to drink water, and to consume the sap from soft plants.

It can also use the appendage for self defense purposes, though this is less common and only used for other insects, as it is mostly entirely vulnerable to reptiles and small mammals. It feeds almost exclusively on plants, though on occasion, especially if it is being attacked and manages to kill their aggressor, they will also use the same process they employ in plants to consume the bodies of their victims. Their mouths, while existant and possessed of a maw and jaw, serve no purpose whatsoever, and are not even connected to a digestive tract. Their exitence implies simply that they are a leftover from evolution. They are not edible by zu'aan dietary standards, though not many would try in the first place. They are passive pollinators.

Ms'e'r'ga, a difficult to pronouce shelled bug that lives on the underside of cacti flowers. They are very small, only five to seven centimeters wide, and have bright orange shells that cover their entire bodies, including their mouth. The shell opens up in a small crevice at the front and unhinges a jaw underneath, which they use to feed. They mostly consume dead plant tissue, pollen, and other insects. They are regarded as a good kind of insect due to the fact that they eat parasites and other harmful bugs. They are a double-edged sword, however, as upon being met with the lack of aforementioned harmful insects, they will instead eat whatever plant they are living on.

Despite preferring to inhabit cacti, since their tastebuds appear to have evolved to prefer this plant, likely due to the fact that it is the most likely to survive in a desert biome, they can be found anywhere, and will consume nearly any plant matter, including leaves, stalks, fruit, vegetables, roots, wood, petals and even needles. They have a powerful acid in their bodies that allows them to degrade almost any kind of plant matter, and also makes them incredibly toxic for most of their natural predators to eat, except a select few, mainly reptiles. They breed quickly and live up to two weeks.
